I've just found your article about the DS923+ and liked it quite a bit. It gave good information about the new product that is arriving.
What I'm still wondering is, should I buy the new system, or stay with the DS920+ and grab it hopefully for a good price during black Friday?
I'm currently using a DS216j with 2x 2TB in RAID 1. I mostly use it for storing documents and pictures and I'm listening to music from time to time, that is saved on it.
Recently I've begun to stream videos from it to my TV and am running out of space as well, so I wanted to upgrade to a 4-bay system to be more flexible in the future.
I was looking at the DS920+. Just add another 2TB drive, change to RAID 5 and I have doubled my storage capacities. Furthermore, using a newer NAS, I'M able to profit from DSM 7.x, as my current model is not powerful enough (only 512MB of RAM) to run the new OS.
Long story short, I will continue to use it as as before and don't need VMs on it. Maybe in the future, the surveillance station will come in handy as well, but for now video streaming will be the biggest point, alongside storing documents, pictures and music. Is the DS920+ the best choice for the years to come, or should I invest extra and go to the newer model?

I am replacing some old hardware and attempting to optimise my home backup and storage setup. I am an Apple user.

I have an old DAS (Thunderbolt) RAID 1 drive which stores all my documents, photos and videos etc.
I use Backblaze to backup the DAS and my computer's system drive to the Cloud. The cheap $7 monthly subscription however only backs up DAS, not NAS drives.
I use Apple's Time Machine software to back up my computer's system drive to an old NAS.
I have 1Gb ethernet and a 50/20Mbps internet connection.

I am thinking of replacing the DAS with a single (larger) Thunderbolt 3 drive, and the old NAS with the Synology DS920+ 4 bay or DS1522+ 5 bay.
I want the NAS to be large enough to backup everything (ie my computer and DAS.
My computer has a 2Tb SSD system drive.

I have started doing 4K video editing and now realise how large the raw footage files are (about 700Mb/minute).

I am thinking of upgrading to:

1. A Thunderbolt 3 (non-RAID) 10-12Tb DAS for storing all my documents etc plus video files. This (and my computer's system drive) would automatically get backed up to the Cloud using Backblaze.

2. A Synology DS920+ 4 bay or DS1522+5 bay NAS to locally backup my DAS and computer using Time Machine. I understand that the NAS needs to be at least twice as large as the DAS and computer combo (ie about 20-30Tb).

I'm assuming the NAS needs to be totally dedicated to Time Machine otherwise the backup strategy doesn't work.

I'll be using a couple of 1Tb portable SSD's for video editing that I'll manually backup. The permanently attached DAS is for media archiving and general documents.

Does this make sense? Any thoughts on sizes or alternative configurations? I think I should be using RAID 5 or SHR-1.

I've watched a few of your videos as I'm trying to fix the H.256 playback on my new DS220+.

I'm using Plex and I can't find the Library folder with the Preferences.xml file.

I'm not sure why... but it's driving me crazy! Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am just a home user, considering purchasing a Synology DS1522+ as i have several NON NAS type SATA drives. like the seagate barracuda ST3000DM type as well as some Toshiba X300 drives.. some WD blues and blacks.. will these drive not even be recognized at all ? do I HAVE TO HAVE nas type drives?

I can afford to buy both the synology and new drives.

I was wondering if you guys could help me. I run media/video/photo operation from home with big video files from various cameras together with raw images that needs backing up. I dont have much knowledge about setting up a proper NAS situation but would love to do it eventually.
At the moment most of the files are scattered around everywhere without proper structure. Would love to make it work somehow. Any ideas?

I'm writing you as I have seen that you have done a review of the upcoming DS923+
As I have not seen it yet on the Synology website, I'd like to ask if you have an estimated release date.
I would use it to backup my computers, store photos, Lightroom and possibly use it for editing (in the future) with a 10Gb upgrade.
Another question I'd like to ask is if the Synology phone app is any good to sync the phone pictures to the nas? As this is one of the reason why I would use a nas rather than a regular hard drive.

As mentioned the old DS413j is runnng a long time against its limmits and need to be replaced. I use it at home mainly for back up for files, photo station (synology photo) and the storage of security footage of the IP cams.
Since i had a critical failure of my non raid video drive i dont use it any more for video/movie storage.

I have watched some comparison video's and i am doubting between:

DS920+
Pro: cheaper and on board gpu power
Con: older CPU and less upgrades posisble

DS923+
Pro; faster CPU and more future upgrades
Con: more expensive? and not as versatile due to lack of gpu power

DS1522+
Pro; same as 923+ but with more ram and one more bay
Con; same as 923+ and even more expensive

Hopefully you guys can help me in this with some insight what i might have missed.

Need a storage for my personal videos, photos, documents. Need to have 10GBE if it is NAS. I can go with DAS but it needs to be faster than usb 3.1 gen 1. I already have 4 Seagate exos 18tb new drives. I tried DS920+ but it is simply did not do a good job with 4K videos and i hated the 1gb rj45. I have 5gbe high speed internet and tplink 10gbe switch and laptop and desktops with 10gbe ethernet ports and thunderbolt. I looked at DS16..xs+ but it is AMD which lacks the media encoding....and DS920+ missing 10GBE...

what do you suggest based on this ? my main goal - absolutely zero data loss and speed. I can just get a DAS and setup a shared folder on my home netwrok as i do not need all the NAS fancy features...but i need the ability to expand in the future higher capacity HDDs when needed and cheaper ( when it becomes cheaper in future)
