Not sure what NAS to buy
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-29-2022, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I really enjoy your videos, they're very helpful but I'm not very techie and could use some help please. I want to purchase a Synology NAS to save all of my family pictures and home videos, I also have a drone so will have some 4k footage as well. But I'm still not sure what NAS would work for me.
I was thinking about a 1522 or an 1821, I want to be sure I have enough drives for future needs, I plan on starting out with four 14TB Iron Wolf drives and using RAID 6. Here's my concern, neither of these NAS are good for transcoding, but do I need Transcoding for home videos & drone videos? I reached out to Synology's chat for help, but they referenced me to their FAQ's that didn't have the models I'm considering.
I'm very confused and don't want to mess up, any recommendations would be appreciated, thank you!

  Synology DS220+ privacy
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-29-2022, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I saw your videos where you compared the DS220+ with the DS220j and I have some questions. Apologies if these questions were covered in another video, I only recently started looking into NAS options.
-you mentioned that Synology's integrated software has face recognition for photos and some sort of AI. Could this be switched off completely/blocked? Would it be relatively easy to switch to another form of management software for it, if no? I really, really have serious privacy concerns regarding this and even so, I wouldn't want to pay for them to train their AI and facial recognition software
-what type of HDDs would you recommend? I was looking into WD Red, but I can't decide between the Red and the Red Plus (SMR vs CMR technology and also regarding noise for regular home use, such as a "cloud" backup for my phone and for my photos and various files)

Thank you kindly for your time and have a great day Smile

Best regards,
Alex

  SHR-2 with 3 drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-29-2022, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Goal: 4x 16TB in SHR-2 = 32TB storage. Already 1x 16TB (ST16000NM001G) running. Budget, so I'd like to use that drive in SHR-2, and retain all data on nthat drive. Same drives still available.

Step 1: 3x 16TB in SHR-2. Step 2: copy current drive to SHR-2. Step 3: delete current drive. Step 4: scaling to 4 drives with current drive. Or ...
Step 1: 3x 16TB in SHR. Step 2: copy current drive to SHR-2. Step 3: switch form SHR to SHR-2. Step 4: delete current drive. Step 5: scaling to 4 drives with current drive.
Can I use my current ST16000NM001G together with 3x ST16000NM002G ?

  Memory upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-29-2022, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there,

Just read your incredible detailed article about memory upgrade of a NAS.
I have a DS713+ for over a decade now. Never swapped hard drives nor upgraded the memory. But I guess it’s about time ;-)

Are you able to give me advise on:
1. Type of hard drives that are compatible -> Amazon
2. Type of memory that is compatible -> Amazon
3. Can I upgrade the memory upto 8gb ? (My brother has a DS216 and did this upgrade)

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
Dimitri

Mapped files appear in Admin folder
Posted by: Scrunter - 12-29-2022, 05:26 AM - Forum: Video/Photo Editing - Replies (2)

I'm a newbie to NAS Drives, had to learn quickly using video posted by NAS Compares which I must say was very helpful

Have a client who decided to purchase a QNAP-TS-431K 4-bay NAS drive, drives 1+2 are striped and a thick provision has been
setup for a single Volume. a Folder share has been set within the drive and mapped on an docking station made by a
company who distributes Body cameras for medical services, the docking station I believe is basically a Raspberry Pi running
Windows 10 Pro.

When I save video content from the body camera to the mapped drive share on the QNAP the files don't appear
as  ********.mp4 and listed separately, they seem to be embedded firstly inside an Admin Folder for each video file that's
uploaded. The admin account was used to map the network share when it was created

Any help with this will be much appreciated  Huh Huh

Backup External Hard Drive to NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-28-2022, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have an external hard drive that I want to back up to my NAS. I have been looking through your YouTube videos, but I am having trouble finding the right video. My ideal scenario is that when I plug my hard drive into my computer, I can easily upload any new files to my Synology NAS device. Whether you can direct me to the correct YouTube video or offer advice, any help is appreciated. Thank you for your time.

  Need Assistance on QNAP NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-28-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello...Have TS832XURP and DS253D NAS in home office. Recently upgraded to Windows 11 Pro. Cannot figure out how to map network drive using an Office365 account.

On the TS832XURP I have 8 8TB Iron Wolf Drives, on the TS253D I have 2 8TB Iron Wolf drives.

It seems I have watched every Youtube video on mapping drives but I still have a permission problem I cannot figure out.

I do not mind paying for support services if it helps me get my NAS's back.

Can You help me?

Thank You
David Harms

  is 1GB RAM enough?
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-28-2022, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey guys/girls...

I run a Plex server on a standalone 24/7 PC (9th gen i3, 16GB RAM)
I point it to my DS418 for media location and it works perfectly, i need to add more drives so looking for 2nd 4 bay NAS.

Im tossing up between Synology DS420J and Terramaster F4-210 1GB RAM model.
Purely on cost...

As the new NAS only has to store the files and isnt the machine that is hosting the Plex Media Server, is 1GB RAM enough?

My biggest files are 2hr movies up to about 60GB but most movies are around 20GB and TV shows in 1080p, i can keep my 4K files on the DS418 if need be.

anyone have any insight, id really not like to spend much more than these models.

my DS418 runs Synology Photos backup and also Synology Surveillance Station with 1x4K and 1x2K PoE Cams, along with holding files for my Plex Server.

Thank you

Which is more future proof QNAP TVS-h1288X or TVS-h874?
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-28-2022, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I currently have a TS-451+ but want to expand to at least a 8 bay. I currently use my NAS for Plex and device backup but am looking to expand my Plex collection for 4k, continue with device backup but add surveliance for 8 cameras and a PCI slot for GFX card (to help with encoding). I was looking at the QNAP TVS-h1288X but was unsure if it is still as future proof considering its 2 years old and the TVS-h874 i5 version (unable to find i7 version here) seems very impressive.
With what I am looking to use it for, which is more future proof QNAP TVS-h1288X or TVS-h874?

Regards
Vince
