  new to NAS

Your videos are great. I've got less than 2TB of movies (112 DVD and about 20 Blu-ray I want to digitize for availability to stream), photos, music, and data but want a system to grow. I have two daughters and a wife that take videos/pics on their iPhone. I have and ASUS GT-AX11000 router connected directly with a CAT8 cable to my Vizio smart tv that has the flex app available on it.I use Mac computers and devices in my home. I want to also be able to access the info remotely via my iPhone and possibly stream movies and grandparents or friends house. I plan to set the NAS up in a well ventilated cabinet next to my work computer two rooms away from my tv. I was all set to get the AS5202T 2 bay system and a couple of Seagate ironwolf pro 6tb drives. Then I was looking at the Lockster gen 2 6702T but would prefer to keep budget and noise down but as you may have noted with cat8 connection I do like to future proof. Any advice would be great.

Recommended best M.2 NVMe SSD for cache on Synology DS920+
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I have just purchased the Synology DS920+ NAS and have populated it with 4 x Seagate Ironwolf 14TB drives. I wish to add two M.2 NVMe SSD drives for read/write cache. Can you please recommend the best value SSD drives for this purpose. My budget for this purchase is around £300. My 4 x Seagate 14TB drives are set up with SHR configuration with the one drive redundancy. Thanks for your help in this matter. I would also like to mention that I love your YouTube videos (very helpful and informative).
Best Regards.

Geoff Woodham.

  Adding disks to DS420+
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good morning Robbie

I purchased a DS420+ (my first NAS) to replace a WD My Cloud Home. I pulled a 10 TB disk out of an external drive I had as a first disk and moved all of my data over to that disk. My plan is to eventually have all WD Red 8 TB disks in the NAS using SHR. Now I am seeing that I cannot add smaller disks to the NAS. Currently I have the 10 TB disk in the NAS. How can I migrate from the 10 TB to 3-8TB SHR. I am pretty computer savvy so I should be able to follow your advice without much trouble. Thanks.

  Pluggable USB’2.5GBe adaptor
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, when looking at your screenshots - https://nascompares.com/answer/synology-...t-adapter/ - my exact same 'Plugable' device IS now seen (power cycle).  But I cannot actually use it though as I can't connect through it.  The device does work, as I've put it into a USB slot in the PC and a Laptop and it does connect. I'm hoping that you can tell me what I'm doing wrong before I return it.
Many thanks
David

  NAS to buy
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Happy New Year.
I have been watched more than 15 videos again and again but I am still so confused. I want to buy or build a NAS on my house. Mostly it will be for photos storage and used alternat9ve to Google photos especially using our mobiles. I will also use it for personal files and 3d drawings. Not sure if 9n the future I will use it also as a plex server f9r music videos or we.
I just want to be fast and keep my lady happy.
So far I have seen
Synology 923, 1522, 1621
Qnap ts664, ts453e
And I have found for really cheap on used market
Qgd 3014 pt for 700€.
I was also thinking to build one but probably this is not the solution.
As I see you are a pro on such subjects so please give me your opinion. I wouldn't mind to pull the trigger for something more expensive if it would be m8ch better solution.
Thank you

  WD MyCloud EX4 replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2023, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Need to upgrade mainly because the MyCloud is too slow (uses standard spinning disks rather than SSD). Speed, RAID1, ability to use SSDs and ease of use are the most important in order of importance (speed being most important). Thank you for your suggestions.

  Synology 923+ Alternative
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2023, 03:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey Eddie,

I am wondering if there is an alternative to the 923+ due to the Plex transcoding oversight on Synology. I missed out on the 920+ which are currently being scalped on the market for $750+. I recently bought a 720+ thinking I could expand with the add-on unit but after doing some research, learned that it has a failure point through the cable. I can still return the 720+ and get a 4-bay unit but I can't find one that has Synology's ease-of-use UI, good security, and customer service.

Hoping you can shed some advice.

Thanks
Tommy

Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2023, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I have a DS920+ as my main, I need to back it up, I am considering a 220J at another location. Is it a good d choice, or do I need a BTRFS unit? Also, should I use a RAID 1 or no RAID in the 2bay NAS, Thanks!! you guys are great!
