  Moving from Drobo
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-19-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

I've been a long time Drobo user. My Drobo 5D is making loud fan noises and I've pretty much decided it's time to replace it. At the moment I think I've got 4 6tb drives in it and one 8tb. I'm a video editor, I connect direct and edit from it. I've been replacing drives in it once every 2 years or so to slowly get more storage space. That's the thing I've loved about Drobo. So now I'm looking at the Synology DS1821+ or possibly the DS1621+. The only thing I'm curious about is the difference between Drobo's BeyondRaid and Synology's SHR. Are they pretty similar? Ideally I'd like to backup all my data and then use my drives that are currently in my Drobo in the new Synology. But I know I'll need to swap a few of those 6tb drives out for something larger in the next few months. With Drobo, that was as simple as popping out the smallest drive and putting a new one in. Then it would take a day or so and fix itself. Does SHR work the same way? If I start with a few smaller drives and slowly start putting in 12tb or larger drives over the next few years, will that be a smooth transition? Basically the same process as with Drobo?

  My Cloud Home replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-19-2022, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

I returned from a two week vacation to find My Cloud Home with a fast strbing white light on the display. After many rests, technical support contacts and other investigations, the drive is no longer accessible through the network. The disks are still moving, so I believe the data is recoverable. My first thought is to piggyback the mycloud off of a WD upgrade and pull the data, and since I am upgrading, I want avoid the current headache of having to break open the drive to retrieve the data (as a last resort), so I am interested swappable bays and the ability for expansion. Is Synology NAS compatible with WD and if so, comparing WD with Synology, which offers the better product value?

  New setup to RAID
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-18-2022, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Hello been watching your videos. Problem, I had a synology DS 920+ and had it set up with one 6 TB drive. I returned it for a DS 220+ based on my needs and purchased an addtional 6 TB HDD for a RAID configuration.

Got the new DS 220+ setup going. However my first drive is set up as an SHR. How can I change it to a RAID 1 configuration? I really want the back up and redundacy. I appreciate any help you can provde. BTW I installed DSM 7.1

Thank you.

Best Synology NAS for Backups and Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-18-2022, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Hi Rob,

First and foremost, thank you for your highly detailed reviews.
I saw a review where you mentioned the DS920+ as a good PLEX alternative, but it failed at 4K, and I also noted your concerns about future-proofing regarding the OS updates on a 2+ year hardware. Should I wait for the DS922? What's the ETA, do you know?

Nevertheless, I would love to get your help in finding the best Synology NAS that not only has 4+ HDDs (for backups) but also can stream within my home network at 4K without any issues via PLEX.

Thank you so much for your time and help.
All the best,
Renato

Plex unable to locate synology DS920+
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-18-2022, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

I have downloaded the Plex app manually to synology DS920+, granted read/write permission and when I log into plex with the quick connect link from Synology, Plex is not recognizing my volumes when I try and create a folder to add to my Plex library.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated!!!

LOCKERSTOR 6 Gen 2 (AS6706T) Asustor 10gbe Card upgrade Advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-18-2022, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello there, first of all id like to say a fantastic to the point NAS Youtube Channel you have, im very new to this NAS and since finding you channel and watching your videos on impulse i brought a nas drive a LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen 2 AS6702T Iv connected this to a mac and pc and works great with 2 8gig ironwolf drives in raid 0. But i would like to buy the 6 bay version with as this can do 10 gbs transfer.
My question is could you advise what 10 Gbs network card on amazon that would be compatible with this LOCKERSTOR 6 Gen 2 (AS6706T)

My current setup is LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen 2 (AS6702T)
2 x 8 TB seagate iron wolf raid 0
2TB Cache Samsung.
1 TB SSD

I would like to add 2 x 12 , 2 x10 and 2x 8 drives in the new system
what raid setting would suit me .
We run a Youtube Channel ( Bournemouth Jet Washing )
so out 4k camera footage would like to go on on drive and then post edting on another etc.
Hope you have time to read and reply.
So much enjoying you content, cheers.

Ps could i back up my videos direct from youtube ?

Regards Ricky Banjo

Not Enough Power, or Unoptimized Settings?
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-18-2022, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

I recently finished setting up a DS920+ (thank you for your advice to my previous question!). As I am getting comfortable, I have started trying to do more and more with it. Initially, I just wanted to host Plex and a few docker containers, (home automation, data backup, the usual), but as I have started to expand into hosting game servers (Minecraft vanilla, Factorio, and maybe another MC server when someone wants to run with mods, possibly more as time goes on), I am noticing that the CPU is sitting quite high.

A common situation I am having is that there will be up to 8 total users connected to the game different servers, and 2 or 3 plex streams going. The plex streams are typically 1080p using 50-90% CPU (more streams higher %), while the game servers take up to 30% or so combined (Minecraft being the biggest usage hog). I didn’t think it would be that intensive

I went through your previous guides to try and optimize the transcoding settings, but it just seems like I am trying to do more than it can handle.

1. Do any ideas come to mind to reduce CPU usage on apps without impacting their performance?
2. In an absolute worst-case scenario, do you have another NAS you’d recommend for such a setup? (I take it something with just a beefier cpu, or even possibly a small dedicated gpu)
