  Transcoding Plex server
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-13-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good morning from france,

I'm contacting you because I have a problem that I can't solve.
I currently use a SYNOLOGY DS923+ NAS with plex installed and my library, an Apple TV 4k 2021 and a 4K Oled TV.
I would like the transcoding not to be done on the server side but on the client side (Apple TV) to take full advantage of the 4K quality. I noticed that there was an option in the Plex account but it doesn't work when I enable or disable it. When I launch a good quality 4k movie (50GB) I get an error message that the server is not powerful enough. I don't have a plex subscription, what advice would you have?

Thank you in advance

Bastien

Hi There

Is it possible to convert one of the USB ports of NAS to an HDMI port and connect it to a separate monitor from your PC?

Thanks

NAS for Plex and back up
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-13-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Thanks to your site I'm looking to get the Synology DS423+ with 4 4TB drives set for RAID 5.

I want to run Plex on it, but I also want to use some of it as a backup for some other documents. Can I use it as a Plex server AND a normal NAS? I've looked all over and it seems to never be mentioned when talking about Plex.

Thanks

  DS1821+ next version
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-13-2023, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've subscribed and appreciated your YT channel for years. I have a DS1813+ w/ (8) 10TB drives. I plan to replace the 1813+ in the near future. I will move the 8 drives to the new unit. I was hoping there would be a DS1823+. From your Taiwan reporting, it appears that won't happen this year. I am curious if you have any insight into Synology's plans for the 8 bay plus series. Will there be a DS1823+ later this year? or a DS1824+? or is the plus series EOL? The current DS1823 XS+ is too expensive for this upgrade. Thanks very much.

Hello, I am trying to decide between h874 i7 vs i9. I have HDDs, non-ECC ram and a PNY Telsa T4 video card for the Plex transcoding. Thanking you in advance.

  which NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-12-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I am unsure whether to do with an entry DS220 (or similar), or to spend more for a 3 bay which can be upgraded. This NAS will mostly be used for backup, big media files, along with general files. Obviously could grow as we understand it more.

advice on which nas to get
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-12-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I've been watching your NAS Videos. Thank you for making them. It's made my process a lot easier. I would love to have your advise on what. you think I need? I've been looking at the QNAP TS-h973AX 9 bay with 32 gb Ram. I want around 100tbs of storage (80tb after raid 5), I'd like to cache SSD's but I'm confused on what to get and the amount, and lastly, the 10g connection is super important for me. Here's a little bit of my situation. I film & edit videos for a living for the last 10 years. I shoot in 4k in almost every project. I primarily want this for storage for my videos and 4k video editing. I want this NAS Connected directly to my computer and only mine. If I do need more computers than mine, I'd only need one more additional 10g port. I've got a lot of questions you've probably answered a thousand times but I'm grateful for your free advice. Again, thank you for making the videos.

I was about to buy either the Synology DS423+ or Qnap TS464. Then I saw this!!!! Cost not withstanding would I be better off with this for plex server and home file storage? I do not use the nas externally just within my home network. I could use six 4TB Gen 3 NvMe drives? and get ~20TB at RAID 5? Since it is a home unit noise is a consideration.
Thanks so much for the help.
Dave
