Synology DS1522+ drive failures - Enquiries - 10-10-2023 I've had a DS1522+ for a year, populated with 4x WD Red Plus 10TB HDDs. With no warning, the storage volume degraded and one of the Red Pluses disappeared in the storage list. I removed it, added it again and it re-appeared. I started a repair of the volume but the repair failed within an hour and the drive disappeared. I removed it and tried it in a PC - it didn't power up. WD took 8 weeks to replace it. The (recertified) replacement went into the NAS and the volume repair completed, it then successfully data scrubbed. An hour later the replacement drive died. Again, out and in - this time no reappearance. Into a PC - it didn't power up. Do DS1522+s kill drives? Is the Red Plus really unreliable - even though they're listed on Synology's compatibility list? The NAS is lightly used and the nice idea of using SHR2 doesn't seem at all robust with 2 out of 5 failures. I'm trying to determine whether it's NAS or drive. The failures had no prior warning. Thanks for any help. RE: Synology DS1522+ drive failures - ed - 10-11-2023 It's essential to recognize that these drive failures are likely coincidental, as WD Red Plus drives are generally reliable and listed on Synology's compatibility list. Sometimes, replacement drives may not be brand new, which could impact their performance. In this case, it appears to be more of an unfortunate occurrence rather than a systematic issue with the NAS or the drives. NAS devices themselves don't typically "kill" drives, especially reputable ones like the DS1522+. To enhance the NAS's reliability, you might consider adding a backup strategy, perhaps a RAID configuration, which can provide redundancy and data protection. |
