advice on which nas to get
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-12-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I've been watching your NAS Videos. Thank you for making them. It's made my process a lot easier. I would love to have your advise on what. you think I need? I've been looking at the QNAP TS-h973AX 9 bay with 32 gb Ram. I want around 100tbs of storage (80tb after raid 5), I'd like to cache SSD's but I'm confused on what to get and the amount, and lastly, the 10g connection is super important for me. Here's a little bit of my situation. I film & edit videos for a living for the last 10 years. I shoot in 4k in almost every project. I primarily want this for storage for my videos and 4k video editing. I want this NAS Connected directly to my computer and only mine. If I do need more computers than mine, I'd only need one more additional 10g port. I've got a lot of questions you've probably answered a thousand times but I'm grateful for your free advice. Again, thank you for making the videos.

I was about to buy either the Synology DS423+ or Qnap TS464. Then I saw this!!!! Cost not withstanding would I be better off with this for plex server and home file storage? I do not use the nas externally just within my home network. I could use six 4TB Gen 3 NvMe drives? and get ~20TB at RAID 5? Since it is a home unit noise is a consideration.
Thanks so much for the help.

  Best rack for Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-12-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
Very useful channel. Thanks.

I currently have a drobo 2, which I think must be 15 years old! Time for an upgrade.
I'm a home user, mainly use NAS for archive storage, Plex and want to move Home Assistant to my new NAS. I don't need NVR; that will be on UniFi. I mainly watch Plex in my home, so not sure how much transcoding will be required. Plex currently works fine for me on my USB Drobo and server on a 2014 Mac Mini.

I want to move everything to a rack. I know the desktop units could sit in a cabinet, but my preference would be for a Qnap rack solution.

Do you have any suggestions, or is one with integrated graphics too much more money compared to a desktop NAS that it's not worth it in your opinion?

Best wishes,
James

Lots of failing QNAP tvs-872xt units
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-12-2023, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My tvs-872xt died. After reading 61 pages in a forum, close to 100 tvs-x72xt models had the same issue. Fix seems to a new motherboard, but this video also has a solution. Any ideas where I can find someone in the US who can do such a repair? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbtzrIUHLgg

https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/tvs-872xt

FYI this is the discussion thread: https://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?t=153097&start=900

And a spreadsheet one of the users put together to keep a tally on the various models that failed: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IkZmIL5lZacWbQC5D4yikbn6o7UJumOQAYtEmrs0zSI/edit#gid=1940317036

QNAP wants $750 to do the repair, which is close to what I can get a replacement for, so I’m looking into all my options. I do enjoy all your expert reviews and comparisons, but wanted to let you know about this issue that many people are having.

  Replacement for DS416play
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-11-2023, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Used for irreplaceable documents and data. Reliability is utmost importance. Currently run in RAID-6 configuration. Use for backup and online streaming of music and movies (many home archives over 70 years old). Also, I backup to hard disk (store offsite) and backup to Synology Cloud. Started with 3x2TB disks and grew to its current size. Mainly concerned about age and that Synology will soon put DiskStation into maintenance only mode for this model so I want to go with newer model. Choice seems to be between DS423, DS423+, and DS923+. I'm ok with standard 1G port. All seem very similar hardware except for CPU. Also, how important is ECC in DS923+? What model do you recommend? Also, toying with DS923+ because # disks can be expanded. If I want to upgrade beyond current 8TB useful capacity (with RAID-6) am I better off with DS923+ and adding expansion chassis where I can just add another 4TB drive or should I bite the bullet and upgrade all current disks?

I can't map a drive to either of the windows 10 pc's on my network. Sharing is enabled on both PC's. All of them are connected the same switch. The PC's can see each other on the network but the nas doesn't show up on either. I reset the nas to factory settings and still am unable to conncet to it. It is found using QFinder but I cant map a drive through it as it keeps saying that it is unable to connect to the drives. I have no idea what to try. I have spent two days trying evcerything that I could find on the internet and still can't access the NAS through my computers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I recently bought my first NAS, the Asustor Flashstor 6 and I'm wondering what SSD's to put in.

I would like to end with at least 2TB of storage after RAID 5 or 6 (still deciding which to use). I would like to keep my spending under €500 but can stretch the budget to €600 if needed.

Also would you recommend buying heatsinks for the SSD"s?

  Drive replacement in DS923+
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-10-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a 4 bay NAS of 8TB/each. They are all Healthy and in good working status. I'd like to upgrade/change one HD for a 20TB. I tried to follow Synology instructions but I'm hesitant to do it since I don't have the options in my NAS that Synology expects. I just need to swap one drive. I tried the unorthodox style - shutting down DS923+ and removing it manually. I didn't get far. NAS doesn't like it. So I put the old drive back and its now running as before and back to square one. Could you kindly walk me how to replace my 8TB for a 20TB? I will greatly appreciate your help.
