NAS Advice |

I'm reaching out to seek your expert advice as I'm in the process of building a new editing system. I'm thinking about getting QNAP TVS-h874T-i7-32g with 8X16TB IronWolf HDDs in RAID 5 configuration, and also Crucial 2TB P5 Plus PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 Internal SSD with Heatsink X2.
The important thing is that I want it to handle 3 editors at the same time with 4K video files on Mac devices, as the work is done using FCPX software. So, I want to achieve maximum speed in data transfer and file handling.
"Additionally, I'm contemplating expanding operations and connecting more devices to the QNAP. Would connecting them via the QM2-2P410G2T card and distributing them through QSW-M3216R-8S8T provide consistent and acceptable speeds for everyone?
So, do you think it's worth investing in the QM2-2P410G2T with QSW-M3216R-8S8T for now, or would it be better to invest in the QXG-25G2SF-CX6 with QSW-M5216-1T in the future?

I recently dusted off my Plex NAS on Synology DS416Play. I'm able to recognize the Plex Media server that is installed in the NAS and watch to my hearts content the media I have on it. I cannot seem to be able to figure out though how to be able to upload additional files to the NAS. I start by connecting and then going to map the network drive and bam.....enter network credentials. I have tried many approaches and I am sure that it is something simple. It has been awhile and while I am able to log into my account with the Synology software I am not able to recognize the NAS on the network. The network credentials, I've put my windows log in. I've tried using the name of the computer and well that's all I got. I'm sure it is something simple as I was able to get it to work for me before but then again I am older now. Hope you might be able to help.

Looking for a NAS build with processing power to run Plex or other media servers, support RAID 5, fast network access for security Camera. In short a well versed NAS solution within a budget, doesn't have to be a ready made solution like the Synology or Terramaster etc. I can be a little technical for assembling one myself.

I edit up to 6k raw files using Divinci resolve
i edit from a m1 pro macbook
would be great to be able to edit from nas, alternatly just need fast data transfer and can edit from my external SSD's
happy to start with a 4 bay and buy expansion units when needed , or go up to 12 bay units from the start if budget allows
looking to use 12TB - 16TB drives,
would be great to keep it under 2k budget (excluding drives)
Thanks

Just enjoying your builds! I am looking to the Jonsbo N3 case to enable expansion from 4 to 8 drives over time. I haven't built machines in a while I built networks for some years before retiring. Now I need to re-engage for income. Looking for a board to support to expand to 8 drives with a 10 gig card perhaps an extra PCIe slot as well for expansion.

Lexar NM790 SSD with Heatsink 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 2280 Internal Solid State Drive
amzn.to/3U4YoYr
So i really enjoyed the review on this and I am looking to replace my existing SSD Cache drives in my Synology DS1019+ that I have that are 1TB drives. I like what you had to say about how these drives operated and the heat sink looks like it would keep them nice and cool.
Do you have any idea if they would fit in the compartment on the underside of the DS1019+? The Current ones I have are several years old Samsun EVO 970s and have been great, but I just got a report from the system that 1 of them has reached its EOL and to replace it immediately so I need to fund a suitable set of replacements as the other one is the same age.
Appreciate any help, just trying to avoid the purchase and send back if possible as they look like fantastic drives just with that heat sink they maybe to think is my only thought.
Again i always enjoy your work and appreciate any insight you might have!

SHR6 and HotSpare? |

Hi,
I had some trouble with my "old" 1821+ populated with 8 disk (4 and 8TB disks.) in shr. i had an corrupted pool.
Those problems are solved. Lucky Me.
But because my data. (over 40 years of digital use) is important.
I bought a second 1821+. And it can be populated with at this time 6 times 16 TB WD drives.
Before setting up i viewed some YoutTube on this matter.
What is the best? Setting up SHR2 and a HotSpare or is SHR2 or Raid 6 more than secure enough?
Hope to get a great advise,
Regards,
Léon

TS-1655 Video Output Issue |

Referring to your article:
https://nascompares.com/news/qnap-ts-1655-atom-based-12-bay/
Where is the HDMI output 1. HDMI 2.0 ?
How do you connect any monitor to this device to allow access to the BIOS and Proxmox and TrueNAS to be installed without having to pay for and install an unnecessary high-end graphics adapter?
Why are NAS units being shipped without built-in video output being mandatory?
Has anyone tried connecting a USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter to a QNAP TS-1655 or similar with any success to access the BIOS?
I contacted QNAP support about this and was immediately asked why I need to access the BIOS!!!!

Synlolgy DS220+ system and apps backup |

I have a DS220+ with a 6TB drive and would like to have a cold spare backup of the DSM system and apps and some data on the spare drive. I have 3 hyperBackups of my data, apps, and system config, but it isn't a plug-and-play restore.
I looked on Google and HDD cloning is advised, for instant cold spare. But I see no such thing in DSM.
In the event of drive issues, I don't want to reconfigure DSM copy all stuff for hours, and re-login to restore destinations and relink all and whatnot.
What should I do for DSM backup?
1. RAID - tho raid isn't a backup, I can't expand the storage on 2 bays
2. hyper the entire system - I have too much data for remote NAS
3. Active backup for NAS - can i backup system and apps only to remote NAS?
4. clone drive - can I clone system and apps, and only copy important data immediately, then restore other later, will it boot and work properly or go bananas with read-only volume?
Thanks for advice
I like your YT channel a lot.
