  Cloud Access NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-11-2024, 12:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am starting a photography business and I need NAS storage inside my network, and also cloud access for my clients.

For the NAS storage I need to store client files in archive, and I need redundancy. Read write speeds to the NAS is not terribly important as this is archive only and not working files.

For the cloud access I need something that is easy to share with the clients. Currently I use Google Drive and create a folder and then share that folder with their email. Once they have downloaded the files I delete the folder. I want this same ease of sharing.

I already have a Unifi Dream Machine SE and I think it has cloud sharing, but I'm not sure how it functions. It seems that I would have to create an account for a client in order to share a folder.

I watched several of your YouTube videos to see if you covered this application and I didn't see anything. What would be your recommendations? This might be a good video to make for your channel.

Thank you,
John

OLD i5 Mini to Server with TB raid, DIY, or prefab?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-10-2024, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have some older i5 Mac Minis and they feature 16GB RAM can handle two internal SSD’s feature TB2, and I’m wondering if I wouldn’t be better off converting them to a roll my own setup vs. either off the shelf or DIY as you’ve outlined on your YouTube. I want to get away from using OpenCore Legacy Patcher and I know *nix runs insanely well on these well appointed systems I’m just not sure how a franken-nas would compare in price and performance to something more traditional in either DIY or prefab.

The volume of information you present is awesome and much appreciated but I find that after watching several of your videos (and numerous videos about the same topic from other people) I’m left with more uncertainty than not.

I’d love to have the option of adding 10G if I can ever afford it but I’m also not sure if getting “future proof,” is the more prudent approach than just getting cheaper for now and addressing the issue later when I’ve run out of expansion options.

THANK YOU!

Best option for upgrading Plex config (Shield Pro + Synology)
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-10-2024, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, first of all, thanks a lot for your videos, I've learned a lot !

Since I'm starting to get low on available space on my NAS (DS218j) I'm thinking about adding a new one and I'm a bit lost with all the available options ...

Here's my setup :
- PMS on Shield TV Pro 2019
- All media on a DS218j (2x 4GB HDD)
- iPad/iPhone/Apple TV/Shield TV (non pro 2019)

Generally 2 users as the same time.

My media consist of a mix of 1080P and 4K.

I want to get a new NAS (maybe a DS423+ starting with 2x 4TB) and add it to my current setup.

What's the best way to set things up ?

- Should I keep my PMS on the Shield or use the DS423+ to host the PMS and keep my Shield as a simple player ?
- Can I setup a master/slave (the master being the 423+) and everything running through it ?
- What are the first upgrades you'd make to the 423+ ? (SSD NVME for caching ? RAM ?)

Thanks a lot for your inputs !

  NAS Advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-09-2024, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am a videographer looking to build my own backup and cloud solution for transferring and editing files. I don’t mind this being a cheaper or weaker build as I’d like to use this to learn more about NAS systems and software. I also plan on upgrading from said hardware and converting that build into a media server or something useful for the home.

  NAS Backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-09-2024, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a Synology NAS 923+, which I would like to backup to an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Raid 0 connecting to my NAS with USB3 port on my NAS. My problem is that I overlooked the fact that my Nas is connected to my UPS using the USB3 port. I'm using my NAS as the networks UPS server. have you any suggestions on how I can overcome this problem. could I for example use a USB Hub?
king regards

NAS for Plex server hosting 4K ripped blu ray
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-09-2024, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I would love some pointers as to which NAS to buy. I am looking to start ripping my 4K discs and setting up a Plex server. I have an Nividia Shield Pro 2019 which I will use to play back the files.
I'm a bit confused as to which NAS I need, I've watched your videos and unsure as to whether I need a NAS with a Graphics Card.
I'd like to go with Synology as I've seen a lot of good feedback around the UI.
many thanks
James

  DAS backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-09-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Firstly, the NasCompares videos are incredible. I'm referring to a video called "Alternataive to the Drobo 5D3 in 2023". I'm in need of a DAS that will be used as not a working drive, but an automated nightly backup of a very fast SSD RAID that I just set up. My requirements are pretty simple: I just need the SATA SSD to be able to "auto-mount" in MacOS at a given time, so my backup software (Carbon Copy Cloner) can mirror my SSD raid, which is 32TB. I'd like a 48TB SATA backup, to account for some capacity cushioning. I'm running a MacStudio M1 Ultra w/ TB3/4. I'm looking for cheap. The DAS backup doesn't have to be silent or fast. Thanks!

Hello, and thank you for all your previous support and advice, I really appreciate it and it helped me make a great decision I believe.

Moving forward I went with your advice and I purchased the DS 923+ my question is regarding Homebridge. I’ve seen people just run it, and I’ve seen people run it in container manager. What are the pros and cons and what is your recommendation thank you.

  Looking for a NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-07-2024, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am new to external storage but PC hardware savvy. I need a fast external storage solution to host my Lightroom catalogs (50K+ raw photos and 4k video files. I am a amature photographer and I produce video content. I need FAST storage. Currently using 4 16TB Seagate EXOS drives non raided and they are a bit slow and do not fit in my PC case. Looking for a faster raid setup and an interface that can handle the throughput. I need speeds in the 300mbs or higher sustained. Too much for a 1gb network connection. I need options. Setup is for a single user I do have thunderbolt 4 on my PC and a 10GB router. Basically just need the fastest cheap option there is with some added speed and redundancy.
