do I need to worry about transcoding??
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2024, 01:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need some help understanding if my particular use case needs to worry about Plex Hardware Transcoding and if I NEED to buy a NAS with Graphics Support on the CPU, or if I can get a NAS with a Ryzen in it. My name will primarily be a Plex server (I have Plex pass) that I'm going to use almost exclusively on my local home network. I would like to have the option to watch remotely on my phone or tablet, but I know I’ll rarely if (ever use) that feature. I do have a lot of HVEC/x265 files, but none of them are 4K. Most are 720, but I'm starting to download my files in 1080p, hence wanting to switch from a 4tb USB HDD to a NAS. Im relatively certain my current Roku smart tv can natively play HVEC/.265 via the Plex app but im not positive and i dont really understand how to check. Given that information, do you believe I need an intel CPU NAS, or would a Ryzen NAS work just fine for me?

  Synology NAS Backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2024, 01:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (6)

I currently have a DSM923+ with 4 x 4 TB drives installed using RAID for 12 TB available space. I have been using HyperBackup and external USB drives for backup. Like many others have reported, the user experience with this option is fairly bad. Is the practical experience of users that if I added a second NAS at some other location for backup purposes, my experience would be truly less painful? Recommendations on configuration? Can I just buy a simple 1/2 bay NAS with a single 16 TB drive?

  10gbe mini itx
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2024, 01:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I run a home made truenas on a supermicro xeon-d itx mobo with 6 sata ssd's and built in 10gbe

It works but it's quite power hungry compared to the more modern chips and runs quite hot. And while nice I don't really care about the IPMI.

I'm seeing so many nas focussed itx mobo's on your channel and others and it's really bewildering me that they waste all those lanes on 4 x 2.5gbe instead of 1 x 10 gbe (i get it if you're doing vm's but many of these are marketed as nas boards)!

Are you aware of any boards that support ECC, low power chip, on board 10gbe, and mITX?

I know i could stick in a nic but i'd rather use the pcie slot for something else like an HBA.

Thanks!

I have a Synology DS1522 and I have enabled encryption. I am attaching a WD 10 TB external USB for backup with that being encrypted as well. I am trying to run the backup but it appears I'm locked out, even though I'm signed in. Where do I go from here?

  Home NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-07-2024, 01:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Sirs - advice needed.

I have a 12 year old buffalo NAS, that has been our home photo / video storage for that time. Its been great, but software is old, and my wife is unable to upload her photos from her phone. I need to download them to my computer then copy them up. She then complains that she is unable to view them or gain access to them!!!

I really need a NAS which operates like a google drive / dropbox, which enables me and my wife to easilly store photos and videos in one location.

Ease of setup and maintenance and use is king.

Thanks in advance

NAS good for (Plex) media server?
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-03-2024, 05:48 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

currently i have a plex media server set-up on my laptop and i use that to occasionally stream photos and videos from the laptop to my tv's. however, this means that the laptop has to stay on 24/7 and the machine is not handling that well.. what would be the best solution for a large storage device that i can stream videos to my tv's (plex works great so prefer to keep that unless you have a better solution).. Also, is it better take put in HDD or SSD for this use to keep noise down?

  Jonsbo N2 Plex build
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-03-2024, 05:48 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Very interested in using the Jonsbo N2 case. Trying to figure out what ITX motherboard to purchase? Would like to keep it at or below $200. I'd also like to install a 10Gb NIC.

This is what I have in PCPartPicker so far: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pGK9HG

Along with a SFX 400W PSU from Amazon at $30.

  Sim powered WiFi router advise
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-03-2024, 09:28 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear NasCompares,

I recently watched your informative and educational YouTube video and found it incredibly helpful. I am currently preparing to embark on a digital nomad lifestyle and am in search of a suitable Sim Powered WiFi router that meets my specific needs.

As a call center employee transitioning to remote work, my primary requirements include a reliable, strong connection to ensure that my calls do not drop, as well as a quiet dedicated workspace. Since portability is not a concern for me, I am seeking a router that prioritizes stability and performance for my stationary workspace.

Considering my requirements, could you kindly recommend a Sim Powered WiFi router that aligns with my needs for a stable connection and a conducive working environment?

I greatly appreciate your expertise in this area and look forward to your guidance.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Luke

  firing up my new DS1522+
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-03-2024, 09:28 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Cleaned up & PLEX prepared my 16,540 videos. No 4K or above. primarily 780 & 1080p. I want to reset my nas (used to just get a taste) I want to set up my volume for 3x10TB, 1x10TB for all my MS Office stuff, and the 5th drive as a hot spare. Raid will be SHR but which one? I back up monthly to transportable 5 TB WB Elements as store off sight (they fit in my small deposit box at my bank) Please review and advise if I should do anything different. Thanks!
