  Home NAS for life?
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-22-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

It has been a while since I wanted to get a NAS to store all the information I accumulate during my life. Now I'm using an old TimeCapsule of 2TB and normal hard drive. I have around 7 to 10 Tb of photos videos and info to save and I was looking for a long term NAS. I was thinking to get a DS1621+ or DS1821+ Synology (for easy of use) worried only by if one day, they get hacked or i get all my info locked. Any news about a future DS1624+ or DS1524+ with better processor or any AI features?

I have a friend that has a 4 bay QNap in her office. She wants to setup another off-site NAS for backup. What's the best software/method to do that?

Thanks for your help,

  Question about Synology DS415+
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-22-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello Guys, first I want to thank you for all the nice explanations.

Maybe you could give me a answer why I cannot update my DS415+ to DSM7.2?
I wont to play around with Joomla 5 and this needed PHP 8.2 but could not find a way to update this, so stuck on PHP 8.0. And it's not available on the Synology Download center.

Also I think of selling my DS415+ and buy an DS423+ , I using a NAS for sharing data, testing websites, Vaultwarden etc. etc. Also there are some options to connect some receivers or SDR-receivers to the NAS, but missing 2 GB of memory. Now it's standard with 2 GB, but needed 4 GB to run at the background a special application.

Could you sent me some info if you have time?

Many thanks

Greetings Danny Branderhorst, The Netherlands.

  NUC rec for 4k transcoding
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-21-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I've been on the market for a Synology NAS for quite some time. Last week, I purchased the 1522+ because it was on a deep discount -- cheaper than 923+, but with an extra bay and 8gb ECC. I quickly discovered the challenges of AMD processor with 4K transcoding and decided that a NUC with the 1522+ as a DAS is best.

I did not see a subsection for NUCs and simply wanted to ask your recommendation for price/performance models. Given the limited availability, high premium, and relatively old hardware that synology provides for transcoding variants, I think it may be helpful to make a resource or video on how to incorporate NUCs to unlock more usage from non-intel NAS.

I noticed there's more videos on creating your own NAS, but I simply dont have the capacity to make my own yet. Would appreciate any guidance you can provide. Thanks in advance.

  Plex and File Server
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-21-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey, I'm considering the DS423+ as a flex and file server. I would also need to buy HDs to fill, so that would be part of the budget. I would mostly stream locally to a TCL roku tv (55R655), apple tv 4k, macbook pro m1, or ipad/iphone.

Was considering two manufactured recertified Exos X20 TB from serverpartdeals.com Open to suggestions here.

I would probably run some redundant system until I actually get close to filling up a 20TB drive. I don't know the official raid terms, so definitely will need to research that more first.

Would the 423+ be the right call or should I consider a 923+ and use my gaming PC as the Plex server and use synology's DSM for the file server? PC has a 5800x3D and 4090.

  NAS purchase decision
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-21-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear nascompares,
I watched a lot of your great videos but still in doubt about the best purchase for my user case, which is:
* Basic backup of photos and videos from my phone to the NAS every day and backup the NAS monthly to an external 4TB hard drive which I then keep at my parents in law. I have 2x 4TB nas hard drives, which is more than enough for the coming 7 to 8 years if not longer.
* I want a good mobile app which smoothly displays and streams my photos and videos.
* Currently I have a TS-233 but it takes about 10 seconds to even watch one picture, which I really am annoyed about. What could be the cause of this issue ? I get the same problem when standing next to my router with 1000mbps internet, and on the nas the cpu and ram use dont exceed 60%.. possibly would I need 2.5gbe connectivity on my nas? Or is it due to a slow processor of the ts233?
* I am doubting between ds224+, ts262 or 264 (only 30 euros more expensive than 262), or ts264. Any advice is appreciated!

  ASUSTOR NAS Upgrade RAM

Hi, I have a question about upgrading RAM on ASUSTOR NAS. I am using ASUSTOR AS5304T NAS. Has anyone tested the RAM brands and models this NAS is compatible with and the maximum number of upgradeable GBs? (CPU:J4125,unofficial limit RAM)

  Buying advice

Hi. I have an office where I have 3 computers, want to add another. We do mainly video editing then also photo editing. Wanted to setup a NAS. I know it will require also a network upgrade, currently all the PCs are running off the ISPs router.
The ability to add more drives is a must.
Thanks.

  sim router
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-21-2023, 05:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need help. I need to get internet into a barn where my granddaughter keeps her horse. I am within a mile from the cell towers and but I don’t know what to buy to make it work. After watching your videos, I see that I would need a 4 or 5G lte router and a modem or a combination router/modem, an exterior antenna, and 2 cameras. I would like to have POE connections on the router. I have watched many youtube videos on this type of equipment but most of them are using cheap routers and Chinese antennas and I have no confidence that they will work for me. You seem to be at a much higher level of knowledge in this area and I have watched your videos but I get lost in the terminology used in explaining things. I’m not a technical person.
If you could help me I would be truly grateful. I will be using a “T-Mobil” sim card.
I'm an old retired geezer, so cost would also be a factor.
Thanks, John
