I'm running out of space on my DS1821+ so I'd like to upgrade to largest Enterprise drives currently available, probably not all at once
I saw your post pushing-boundaries-seagates-exos-x24-with-a-whopping-24tb-capacity but can't find any evidence they work with Synology
Synolgy's compatibility list max's out at 16TB for Seagate there own HAT at 18TB (These are like 4 times the price of Exos X24 24TB)
Will these drives work?
Is there any reason why these newer larger Hard drives won't work?
I'm aware each volume l has a 108TB limit but you can more than 1 volume within a storage pool
Thanx

Hello
I am currently looking for a more powerfull and capable nas unit to replace my older QNAP TS-431K.
Our current setup involves 17 users who are coppying files and folders to and from the server over gigabit ethernet (running through 10Gbe fibre to the main switch with the nas connected to it, using that switch's gigabit ports) on an hourly basis. These files are on the small side (10-40MB), with the largest files that will ever need to be coppied being around 8GB. I also run two seperate partitions, one for the office documents and files and a second for employee data and other backend business stuff.
Would the synology DS-1522+ or the DS-1821+ be a better sollution. The ssd caching abilities on both of these are very appealing. Can I run a 2TB/4TB nvme cache for each individual partition and would a read/write cache be better for accessing the most recent files quickly or should I use those for BTRFs indexing instead? Would you recommend a different nas?

I had a NAS system built in early 2023 specifically to stream movies over a home network. I purchased the individual components, but the unit itself was put together by a computer store. I discovered recently from viewing a couple of your YouTube videos that the drive does not have a processor necessary for playing larger files, such as 4K. I need advice as to what I should do now to upgrade the unit. Should I purchase another one with a built-in processor? Should I purchase a dedicated PC to stream files from the NAS? I am a novice, so I apologize if my questions don't make sense. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Guys,
I have not had a NAS for several years and now am in the need to set one up. I am very interested in the Ugreen 4 bay pro unit. I plan to have one at home and one at my studio (music and photo). I plan on backing up the home files onsite and then onto the NAS at my studio. Similarly, I want to back up the studio data onsite and then to the home NAS. Does this sound like a good (3,,2,1) backup strategy? Secondly, should I move up to 6 bay units to run RAID 6?

I no longer use my PC and I am contemplating building a NAS using Sata SSD drives.
In my pc that I no longer use I have a AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and was wondering if it is worth repurposing the CPU or selling it to buy a different one?
I will be using it for Media back up , phone, laptop etc. But I also want to be able to store 4k movies on it and stream it to my TV using Jellyfin/Plex.
Cheers

Hi Guys, I bought a synology da1621+ for work, it was a bit of a rush purchase with a bit of research but considering this is our starting point I felt it was a solid purchase. The only thing that I'm not sure what to go for is or understand fully is the SSD/HDD setup. I would like quick access to the NAS as we store case details that can stem back long periods time with up to 20 members of staff needing to access.

I'm currently using a NAS for my home theater plex, and a few friends[4 max, rarely] it has been bullet proof for the last 4 years with no problems. I'm looking to expand my storage capacity, but I'm unsure which route to take.
Option 1 would be upgrading to x4 20-24tb drives. I currently use the WD Red pro 14tb drives so this would be most likely the easiest. Concerns with this would be that the DS918+ is aging, and while it hasnt given me any problems YET, might there be some issues with the larger drives?
Option 2 would be adding a DX517 expansion unit, and adding more 14tb drives. this would keep everything simple, but it would also end up costing about the same as option 1, so, this eliminates any cost comparison/concerns. I've never used an expansion unit so I would be unfamiliar with how Plex would perform.
Option 3 would be to upgrade the DS918+ with the newer gen DS923+ and also the DX517. This would obviously be the most expensive option.
Any feedback would be LIT

Hi. I’m mainly a Mac user and about to upgrade my Mac hardware. Their storage is quite expensive when speccing a product hence the thought of having a NAS system which would benefit not only me, but also my wife. Been watching a lot of your videos, and the products which I’m gravitating towards is the QNap,TS 464-8g or the Synology DS 1522+. Multimedia is important to me and the idea of ripping blu- rays onto a NAS drive to play anywhere is appealing (QNap) but the more user friendly and more secure software of the Synology is less scary! So question is, which would be the one would suit my needs more and offer the most future proofing as time moves on. A couple of additional questions,
Can I hot swap hard drives when I need to replace or upgrade without data loss
Can I mix different capacities within the NAS bays
Can Drobo be considered as an option?
Many thanks in advance
Rich

NVME SDD's for NAS Synology DS 920+ |

Currently I got 2 exos enterprise HDD's but want to boost performance of my IOS with accessability. The whole website weight around 0,5 GB, so 512 GB space should give enough boost for few years of operations.
I'm looking into the upgrading my NAS with cache, where I would push website database and files for faster caching.
As wrote in another article on this website this NAS supports" PCIe Gen 3 x4 M.2 SSDs or caching (...) NAS would result in these SSDs being throttled to PCIe 2X2, 2X4 or 3×1, but these would still allow around 1000-200MB/s of throughput on these bays and that would have been hugely beneficial to VM, Docker and Database users.". I see no point in upgrading the SDD's with the newest PCI-E SDD's, supporting nvme 2.0 and PCI-E 4.0 if my NAS won't utilise this bandwith.
Likely what my Synology DS 920+ can utilise, is 7 times smaller then Samsung 1TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe 990 PRO or ADATA XPG Gammix S70 Blade 1TB SSD.
Let me know whether my considerations are valid.
