I have a lot of movies and series over a 1000+ and im expecting to probably buy more. I dont know a lot about technology but I have always wanted to have all my movies on one platform so I made a plex account. Just to give you an example of how little I know about this yesterday I got my blu ray hard disc drive so I downloaded my first movie which was Once upon a time in america 4 hours and 11 minutes!! it took 40 gb. I just thought hey now that its on plex then I can just delete it from my pc. So I did that and now the movie is gone which took me around 3 hours to download. I also didnt realize that I have to have my pc turned on all the time to watch my plex in other places. If want to watch a movie at my friends house then I cant cause my pc is at home and turned off. Now my question is that im looking for something where I can store all my movies and series on (So alot of gbs) and where I can have it connected on the internet so i dont have to turn my pc on and i can watch anywhere

after a lot of deliberation I finally settled on a TS-262 instead of a Synology. I am happy with it for the most part and can live with few of the downsides.

However this issue has been annoying me so much. I have a single 4TB HDD and the NAS seem to be constantly accessing the disk. It is not too loud but it is always in the background which gets on your nerve.

Given that I have a single HDD the system volume is on the HDD and I do use few apps like QCenter, QVPN etc. that are known to access the disk frequently. So I know why the disk is always active.

I need help with this part. I read that the system volume can be setup on a SSD, since the NAS is pretty new I can reset the NAS to make this happen. However will this prevent the HDD from being constantly active due to these applications thereby eliminating the constant noise?

p.s: The NAS is used mostly for media download/streaming and photo storage and used only by me

Hi. I enjoy your YouTube channel very much, and based on your advice on the channel, I bought two QNAP NASes. I bought a TS-453D, and later a TVS-h674. I put the TS-453D in a remote location and installed the upgraded TVS-h674 into my home office. I also have two TR-004 extension NASes on each NAS.

I put much of my archived material from years before on the connected TR-004 NASes. They were plugged into an old UPS. Unfortunately, the old UPS didn't work properly and suddenly cut electricity to the TR-004 extension NASes.

Fortunately, the main TVS-h674 was plugged into a more robust UPS, so the electricity didn't cut on that one suddenly. Also, fortunately, I have a full backup of my archived material on the backup 453. However, QNAP's HYbrid Backup Sync cannot connect the backup NAS to the remote NAS. QNAP's technical support people remotely connected to both my NASes. They said that the problem was that port 8899 wasn't open on my local network. I opened the port, but nothing.

I have 4K movies, Music and files to backup. The Asusstor 5402T seems a good bet. Why does one need HDD as well as NVMe and which is preferable? Also I have seen that the WD Red HDD should be avoided. Is this so?

Hi, first of all thanks for all your youtube videos, they are very informative and have answered a lot of questions for me, but also raised a simple question - which one?
At my home I have a Swann security system and also have a Reolink standalone 4G camera on vacant land I own. I've decided I will need something more powerful for the business I am starting and a NAS surveillance system is where I'm sure I need to go. I'll need no more than 20 cameras, but I would also like to add IP door locks and potentially other IP related items down the track (keypad entry gate, door locks etc). It will be an accommodation business with 5 studios and storage shed and caretakers residence.
I was thinking a dedicated surveillance NAS, but now I am not sure.
Could you help me find a suitable system please?

Can I backup my Synology NAS to UniFi UNAS Pro (I believe this requires rsync)?

Hi, my name is Lance and I had a quick question about which model of QNAP to buy. I am looking to upgrade my 451+ model and need a faster processor and more expandability without having to buy a external expansion module for now. The two models that I have been looking at are the TS-464 and the TS-873A. I do not run many apps on the server but would like more performance and the ability to expand without purchasing something else, until I need to. I have watched both Youtube videos on the models and they seem fairly close and even compared the processor speeds on cpubenchmark.net and they are fairly close as well. From your expertise, which model would you recommend, as I do not want to spend the $1,000 now and just go with the TS-464 but will spend the extra money for the 873A if you think it is worth it now or even wait if QNAP is about to do a refresh on either of these models. Any help would be appreciated and have a great weekend! Thanks.

I Let me start by saying I've been watching your youtube channel for a couple of years now and I love the detailed reviews you do. I'm looking to buy a new NAS server for home. I've had 2 QNAP servers in the past a TS639 Pro and a TS419 PII. We primarirly use it to store important home files and documents and lots of home videos and photos. My wife being a photographer has been doing a lot on it and I'm looking to get a replacement. I have been eyeing the QNAP ts464 with all its upgradeable perks and was wondering if you would recommend anything better that won't break the bank. I would like something with the following: 4bays that can handle RAID 5 and has Nvme cache options. If you could recommend one I would trully be appreciative.

I would like guidance for a few questions.

I have a collection of movies / TV Shows (1080p or SD) and audio files (flac). Currently the collection is 8TB, but will grow as I convert a very large collection of DVDs and CDs to files. Expected growth over time is another 8TB or more.

Currently the collection is on a pair of external Lacie d2 Professional drives (drives are Seagate Ironwolf Pros).  These drives are backed up to another Lacie d2 Professional.  Movies / Music that I want to use are copied to another external which is connected to my router via USB.  The files are played on an Nvidia Shield Pro (via Kodi), a PC (VLC and Foobar2000) and phone /tablet (VLC).  I am the only user.  It is only used in my home.

Rather than have a subset of my collection available,  I would like the entire collection available via NAS.  The master copies will remain on the individual external drives, which will continue to be backed up.  The NAS is an extra copy of the data for daily usage.

I have narrowed the NAS down to a QNAP TS-464.  Based upon current and projected data and current pricing at ServerPartDeals, I am leaning towards 18TB Seagate Ironwolf Pros.

Question 1: Am I better off starting with two 18TB HDDs in Raid 1, keeping bays three and four open or going directly to three 18TB HDDs in Raid 5 (with bay 4 for future use)? Is there a benefit to buying all three drives at the same time? Price and availability will be different when / if I need the 3rd drive. I plan on using snapshots.  As I load more onto the NAS, the data will grow on the weekends, so a weekly snapshot will suffice.

Question 2: I plan on using QTS as the OS.  Is there any benefit to including a pair of M.2 NVME drives in Raid 1 for the purpose of having the system volume separate from the data volume?

Question 3: Noise.  Based upon your video for TS-464 noise levels, it seems that most of the noise will come from the drives.  I have seen various recommendations for adding tape / cardboard to pad the drives so they don't rattle, other recommendations for using screws instead of the side clips and further recommendations that adding the NVME drives for the system volume reduces noise.  Will any of that actually help?  The NAS will be in a bedroom.

Question 4: RAM.  For my usage above (file server for movies / music), will the installed 8GB be enough?  If I do want to add additional RAM, can I only add 1 additional stick so long as it is of the same size, type and speed, or would I have to replace the installed RAM for the sake of having a matching brand?
