Hey, Looking for recommendations for a good MATX / cpu combo to support a NAS. Main use case will be a central file sever with min 8 drives to start with but with possible expansion up to 18 in the future. It will be a mixed drive situation with 3.5" HDD and 2.5" SSD's. Probably 8 of each HDD & SSD. Depending on the PCIe slots and amount of onboard SATA ports on the mobo was thinking prioritize SSD's for the to the onboard SATA ports and using LSI HBA in a x8/x4 to run the HHDs. Is this a reasonable management of PCIe bandwidth or is there other better methods you can recommend? I dont want to spend a massive amount but want a long term reliable NAS.

Hello, I currently have a Drobo 5Dn-2 NAS which still works but because Drobo is no longer in biz I am building a DIY solution to replace the Drobo.
My question: is it possible to install the 5 HDD array from the Drobo into the new DIY NAS and have the data recognized by the new NAS OS? Or will I have to copy the data over to the new NAS? Probably going to use TruNas but could use any other solution if not possible with TruNas.
I also have an OWC DAS Raid -5 array that I would also like to have managed by TruNas (or whatever OS) as a second volume if that is possible as well.

I'm looking to setup a home server, probably with Proxmox, one of the applications I intend to run is Frigate for CCTV recordings. I got a 4GB 3.5" I removed from an old NAS that I intend to use for Frigate recordings, no need to for all those writes on a NVME SSD.

To that effect, I'm looking at a motherboard like a CWWK "12th i3-N305 N100 NAS Motherboard 6-Bay DC Power 2xM.2 NVMe 6xSATA3.0 PCIE X1 4x i226-V 2.5G LAN DDR5 ITX Mainboard" (seems I cannot add links) that has 2 M.2 NVME slots, 6 SATA connectors and a mini PCIE slot for WIFI, that I intend to populate with a mini PCIe Coral Edge TPU accelerator, for primary storage I got a 1 TB Samsung NVME card left over from an older project.

What I'm struggling with is a suitable cabinet for it, ideally a rack mount cabinet with space for one 3.5" harddisk, but I'm open for non rack mount options too.

Any suggestions for a cabinet, or comments regarding the motherboard and other HW?

I currently have the qnap TS 464 with 4 8 GB drives in a raid 5 configuration for a total storage of 24 gb. I'm thinking about buying the qnap TS262 with two 10 GB drives in a RAID 0 configuration to be used off site as a backup. I currently use about 3/4 of the storage available to me and don't anticipate that increasing drastically over the next few years. It's a good idea?

I'd like to upgrade Volume 1 on my DS920+ Plex server to a Seagate Ironwolf Pro 24TB and because my original build has been through so much tinkering I want to start a clean install from scratch. I currently have 3 HDDs, and would replace all 3 sequentially, but want to make sure all the media on the 3 drives is properly copied to the new storage.

I will be purchasing a new Qnap TVS-h874-i7-32G soon. If I would like to run multiple docker instances on it what size NVME drives would you recommend as a minimum? Also do you have an affiliate link for B&H in the US I could use to help the channel?

Thanks so much for your detailed video. We will need a Hotspot for work sessions: max. 15-18 Laptops. Webapp downloads map tiles (depending upon user zoom level needed, these are also cached by browser) otherwise very little data is moving over the network.
Alternatives considered: D-Link DWR-2101 and Netgear Nighthawk M6 (not Pro). Both are good but we are not sure wherether the 1.6GB (D-Link) is sufficient or better to go with M6 (2.4GB max.).

I need some advise on what motherboard & CPU is best for my DIY NAS build.
My NAS will be used mainly for Plex media server, 2 users on same network and upto 5/6 users remotely, hopefully not all at the same time, but few occasions might be, my question is what motherboard and CPU would be best to handle all this, the case I'm looking to get with be either the Jonsbo N2 or N3, would prefer the N2 as its a bit smaller but if the CPU needs a bigger fan then might need the N3 to fit it in.

Hope you can help me decide what one to choose, I have watched and read you stuff about it all but think I need a little advice for my NAS usage.

I have a lot of movies and series over a 1000+ and im expecting to probably buy more. I dont know a lot about technology but I have always wanted to have all my movies on one platform so I made a plex account. Just to give you an example of how little I know about this yesterday I got my blu ray hard disc drive so I downloaded my first movie which was Once upon a time in america 4 hours and 11 minutes!! it took 40 gb. I just thought hey now that its on plex then I can just delete it from my pc. So I did that and now the movie is gone which took me around 3 hours to download. I also didnt realize that I have to have my pc turned on all the time to watch my plex in other places. If want to watch a movie at my friends house then I cant cause my pc is at home and turned off. Now my question is that im looking for something where I can store all my movies and series on (So alot of gbs) and where I can have it connected on the internet so i dont have to turn my pc on and i can watch anywhere

after a lot of deliberation I finally settled on a TS-262 instead of a Synology. I am happy with it for the most part and can live with few of the downsides.

However this issue has been annoying me so much. I have a single 4TB HDD and the NAS seem to be constantly accessing the disk. It is not too loud but it is always in the background which gets on your nerve.

Given that I have a single HDD the system volume is on the HDD and I do use few apps like QCenter, QVPN etc. that are known to access the disk frequently. So I know why the disk is always active.

I need help with this part. I read that the system volume can be setup on a SSD, since the NAS is pretty new I can reset the NAS to make this happen. However will this prevent the HDD from being constantly active due to these applications thereby eliminating the constant noise?

p.s: The NAS is used mostly for media download/streaming and photo storage and used only by me
