  1st NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-05-2024, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. I’m mainly a Mac user and about to upgrade my Mac hardware. Their storage is quite expensive when speccing a product hence the thought of having a NAS system which would benefit not only me, but also my wife. Been watching a lot of your videos, and the products which I’m gravitating towards is the QNap,TS 464-8g or the Synology DS 1522+. Multimedia is important to me and the idea of ripping blu- rays onto a NAS drive to play anywhere is appealing (QNap) but the more user friendly and more secure software of the Synology is less scary! So question is, which would be the one would suit my needs more and offer the most future proofing as time moves on. A couple of additional questions,

Can I hot swap hard drives when I need to replace or upgrade without data loss
Can I mix different capacities within the NAS bays
Can Drobo be considered as an option?

Many thanks in advance

Rich

NVME SDD's for NAS Synology DS 920+
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-05-2024, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Currently I got 2 exos enterprise HDD's but want to boost performance of my IOS with accessability. The whole website weight around 0,5 GB, so 512 GB space should give enough boost for few years of operations.

I'm looking into the upgrading my NAS with cache, where I would push website database and files for faster caching.

As wrote in another article on this website this NAS supports" PCIe Gen 3 x4 M.2 SSDs or caching (...) NAS would result in these SSDs being throttled to PCIe 2X2, 2X4 or 3×1, but these would still allow around 1000-200MB/s of throughput on these bays and that would have been hugely beneficial to VM, Docker and Database users.". I see no point in upgrading the SDD's with the newest PCI-E SDD's, supporting nvme 2.0 and PCI-E 4.0 if my NAS won't utilise this bandwith.

Likely what my Synology DS 920+ can utilise, is 7 times smaller then Samsung 1TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe 990 PRO or ADATA XPG Gammix S70 Blade 1TB SSD.

Let me know whether my considerations are valid.

QNAP TR-004 slow when attached to desktop
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-04-2024, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have been trying to figure out why my QNAP TR-004 is comparatively slow when connected directly to my Mac Studio via USB, as compared to when I access it over a local 10GBe network and it is attached to my QNAP TVS872XT. I have 4 20TB Ironwolf drives configured in Raid 0, and when I connect to the TR-004 via the TVS872XT, I get read speeds up to about 1000 MB/s, but when I connect it directly to my Mac Studio, that drops to 200 MB/s (and sometimes it caps out at 40 MB/s). I have filed a ticket with QNAP support, but they are not very helpful in figuring this out. I thought you might have some perspective on what might be going on here to help me diagnose or fix the problem. The issue is that I sometimes need to use the TR-004 as a DAS (when traveling), and sometimes I need it connected to a NAS for access. If you have any thoughts, I would appreciate it!

  RS820+ RAM upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-04-2024, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I added a 32GB RAM module to my Synology RS820+ and when I go to the resource monitor screen, it shows the 32GB. But the Info Center page shows only 2GB, and what's worse is the Virtual Machine Manager can only access 2GB. The whole reason I added the RAM was for running VMs. Is there any way to fix this? The RAM seller indicated that their RAM was compatible with my NAS model. But perhaps they didn't thoroughly test it.

  Help comparing 2 Nases
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-04-2024, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, Ive been pouring over your reviews of 2 particular Nas machines and cant decide between them
1. Qnap TS435 short rackmount
2. Terramaster u8-450

I realise the terramaster has 8 bays, which is more than I need, but good for the future while the Qnap has some inbedded graphics. I don't have any use for plex, or similar, as I don't have any media on hard drives (for now) and mainly need a file server to run NextCloud and VMs, maybe some VOIP phones.
I have 10gb networking so both are attractive in their 2 SFP+ ports.

I cant decide between the cheaper QNAP with "better" software and embedded graphics or the slightly more expensive non graphics Terramaster which offers more future proofing and the ability to have TrueNas. My only worry is the very low end CPU - Atom C3558. It seems less powerful than a £50 raspberry pi - should I be worried about it.

I would love your thoughts, thanks in advance.

Asustor + Btrfs + R/W cache = data loss risk
Posted by: migueldc - 04-04-2024, 07:39 AM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

So, this is the 2nd time in 2 years that I have lost some important data on my Asustor AS6510T

I have 5x 18Tb drives in Raid 5 , Btrfs and 2x 1Tb SSD for caching

First time was in 2022 with during the Deadbolt attack, but the data loss was not due to Deadbolt (although a few less important files), but due to the ADM update to fix it :
- after the attack, the NAS hung for 30mins in the initialization phase, so I couldn't install the ADM update
- removing the SSDs made it start up with the new ADM but did not recognize my Volume 1 (corrupted)
- after trial and error, I put the SSDs back in and it suddenly recognized my Volume 1 again although some files were lost

Last week, I bought 2x extra 18Tb to increase my volume size and upgrade to Raid 6
- I did "safely remove cache" in ADM, but after 30mins, it was still suck on 0%
- So I had no other resort than trying a hard reboot (in hindsight I should have waited for hours, but who would expect a 1Tb SSD flush would take hours..) and that's when my Volume 1 was inaccessible
- I took the SSDs out, rebooted and back in and then it recognized my Volume 1
- I then safely remove my SSDs (this time it took 15mins)
- ADM started immediately a rebuild
- after the rebuild, I got a weird status (see attached pics) :

  • RAID Level RAID 5 : Drive 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5 (2 times 5!!)
  • RAID 5, data protection None (Faulty drives tolerated 0), even though I have 5x disks of 16.37 Tb (18Tb) and a total volume capacity of 65.47 Tb.

After the 4 day Quin Ming holidays, Asustor support will investigate my volume, see if any date is lost
In the meantime I bought 4 extra disks to copy all my data to.

Asustor clearly stated : Btrfs in combination with R/W cache can corrupt your disk if the SSDs are removed (or fail)
Now, that I would call a HUGE security risk and as a product manager myself I cannot understand why ADM does not warn the users at all or even better, would restrict the use of R/W cache in combination with Btrfs

After copying my data over, I will probably delete the current volume (crashed 2 times, don't trust it anymore) and create a clean
new volume

So my questions to the forum are :
- Should I use Ext4 instead instead of Btrfs ? Is it really safer ? Strangely enough, the same Asustor support told me Btrfs is fine and is actually a good fs. Really after what they said ??
- I will probably not use Cache (or at least not R/W cache) ever again...
- or should I just get rid of my Asustor and go back to Synology or build a NAS myself with TrueNAS ?

Any tips here ? people with same experiences ?

What would be the safest NAS (Synology, TrueNAS) and safest Filesystem ?
Plz, take into account mirroring is not an option with +60Tb data, but Raid 6 is

NAS expansion query - Asustor AS6704T gen 2
Posted by: markpabbott - 04-02-2024, 08:55 PM - Forum: NAS upgrades - Replies (1)

Evening all

As a relative newbie to having a NAS (21Tb RAID 5), I am now rapidly running out of space so would like to add an expansion cabinet which I would then populate with 4 additional Seagate 12Tb Ironwolf NAS drives.

I am currently running RAID 5 on my Asustoir, so how would I add these drives thus increasing my capacity or do I have to create a seperate RAID array ?

Advice and or guidance would be much appreciated.

It is used for 3 PC b/u (Acronis Cyber protect) and also as a PLEX server(a;llso backup).

Many thanks from a new member.

  Process for re-using HDD
Posted by: box - 04-02-2024, 02:08 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (3)

Hello everyone

New member here with a question about re-use of HDD

Situation is I have upgraded to a 4bay 918+ from a 2 bay 214 Play

For a number of reasons the migration route ended up being an old school copy -the 214 has not been used for anything fancy so I just needed to move the data across and I duplicated the folder structure albeit under a new admin/user account etc

So I now have a 918+ with 2 new 4Tb drives in SHR and the same data as the 214 Play which still has the old 4Tb drives also in SHR

The drives in the 214 are only about a year old and SMART testing OK so I want to add them to the 918+ as a 3rd and 4th drive

My question is how can I re-use them.  Can I just remove them one by one from the 214 and insert them into the 918+ without doing anything first?

Would the 918 will see each as a new drive and will reformat them and then add them to the SHR so it effectively goes from a mirrored RAID 1 to RAID5?

As they are currently in an SHR array, albeit a mirror, is that going to be a problem in the new NAS?

I have searched for an answer without success and Google etc only really deals with data migration, not re-use of hard disks that were in an array

Thanks in advance

NAS Recommendation for a Creative, 2-4 Bay, Backup solution and Data Storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-02-2024, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there,

I'm in the creative field and need a NAS that can handle a bunch of different tasks. I need to store and back up my photos, videos, and various work documents. I also want to back up my Mac and iOS devices. On top of that, I'm looking to host a website through the NAS since I do web design, and I'd love to set up a library for streaming videos and music at home.

Could you recommend some NAS models that would fit these needs, especially ones that are easy to use, scalable, and offer good streaming quality?

Thanks for your help!

  QNAP Plex and HDMI
Posted by: DrDre - 03-31-2024, 09:40 PM - Forum: Existing NAS users - Replies (1)

Now that QNAP has removed Plex from its HD Station, what is the point of HDMI output now? Even QNAP said that including "HDMI out" on it's Plex page was misleading.
