i have DS218+ and i'm looking for a new one. I have 8TB running in mirror. I really don't know which is the best one. i use PLEX the most and would like to have a large software opportunity's.

I have a DS 920+ with 4 14TB drives running in SHR1 . I use it as a Plex Media Server and storage of mkv files that I have ripped from 4k discs. The DS920 does the transcoding when needed for rooms in the house that do not have 4k TV's or a player incapable of transcoding.

I am getting low on storage space, & would like to expand rather than delete.

What is the best option, from a hardware stability, Plex performance standpoint?

Is it a DX 517? If so should I expand the pool or should I make this a separate volume? If it is a second volume, I would just have to point plex to it, correct?

Is it a second NAS unit, that would serve as essentially JBOD, and point plex to it, allowing the 920 to continue to do transcoding? Is there a performance hit of data going over the network to be transcoded, then sent back over the network to my streaming boxes?

I know I could buy larger drives, but I do not want to have perfectly good 14TB drives sitting on a shelf.

Hi I am wheelchair bound and since trying to update DS918+ from DSM 6.2 to DSM 7.1 via DSM 7.0 first Plex no longer works and I can't uninstall to load a fresh install have been sent the following instructions:-

It seems that you encountered a known issue with DSM 7.1.1, you may follow the steps below to resolve the error:

SSH into DSM as root.
Execute the command: cp -af /usr/syno/synoman/webman/modules/PkgManApp/PkgManApp.js /usr/syno/synoman/webman/modules/PkgManApp/PkgManApp.js.bak
Execute the command: rm /usr/syno/synoman/webman/modules/PkgManApp/PkgManApp.js.gz
Execute the command: sed -i 's/SYNO\.SDS\.htmlEncode/Ext\.util\.Format\.htmlEncode/g' /usr/syno/synoman/webman/modules/PkgManApp/PkgManApp.js
The issue will be resolved in the next update of DSM 7.1.1. For the time being, please utilize the commands provided above.

I'm very nervous about trying to do this as I have limited computer skills controlling PC by mouth.

Hi, I’ve just brought a TS464-8G. I’ve got 2 x SSD T500 NVME, 2 x WD 8TB Red Pro and 2 x WD 6TB Red plus. I was planning to run SSDs in raid 1, the 8TB in raid 1 for maximum protection of personal data, photos, etc. I was planning to use the 2 x 6TB as a JBOD for large storage (12TB) that I can use (games, torrent, etc), not worried if I lose data on drive fail. I assume I do SSD install first to get OS on SSD and then raid/pool the drives together. Then add 8TB together and raid 1. Should I use qtier to combine SSD/8TB raid 1 for better speed? Also if I add 6TB JBOD (12TB) can I also add separately to qtier. Would like best advice on setting up NAS? Brand new to NAS but have read your articles/vids. Regards Alan

I currently have a Asustor Lockerstar Gen 2 - 2 Bay Nas.

This has done well for me and is at a good price point for the performance onto of a OS That i found easy to work with alongside portainer despite a learning process.

My primary focus is on this being a Media Drive with streaming to people outside via JellyFin.

Looking for 5 bays minimum however if the price/performance is sufficient i am open to adustments in bays/budget.

I have been able to do this with the Lockerstar Gen 2 and it's Intel Processor very well and i am reluctant with other choices that may struggle with transcoding. However this is partially due to my lack of experience and history with alternatives.

Any suggestions and direction would be appreciated, thanks!

Can I create 2 volumes of raid 5 one using 5x8T drives and other 10tx5. PrimaryV1 backup to Vw.

Do you see a problem with this method and can it be done?

I am reaching out in a state of final desperation. I have lost access to 12TB of data on my TBS-464 NAS after installing a new QTS firmware. The device is now stuck in a perpetual installation loop, and I am unable to progress past the installation step (where I choose "Reset Factory Settings" after which it reboots). No matter what I try, I always return to the same installation screen.

In the past, I resolved a similar issue by installing an older firmware version (QTS 5.0.0-2131 build 20220815), but now I am unable to locate this firmware version for download. It appears to have disappeared from the QNAP servers. I have already tried installing several different QTS versions, but none of them have worked to restore normal operation.

Could you please advise how I might obtain this specific firmware version or offer any alternative solutions to regain access to my data?

Hi I have an Omen 30L HP Pc with no thunderbolt 3, I don't have the hardware for 10gbe network yet. I've been frustrated with performance demonstrations with 10gbe speeds - I have terabytes of 4K -8K data and installed 2 2tb NVME's in both my NAS's

I'm considering switching to Mac system and would like to be portable as well as have beefy editing setup.
Can I connect to both my Qnaps individually to the new MacBook Pro M4 MAX via thunderbolt and connect an external display to treat the MacBook like a home station and get fast Thunderbolt editing speeds via plugging in direct?

Experiencing problems with NAS and would like to pay you guys at NASCompares for a 1 on 1 Zoom meeting to discuss how to fix my system, improve thrust and discuss managing expansion . Bought an AS6508T. installed 2 8TB ironwolf HD and 2 2T m.2 cards. The device is only recognising 1 M.2 card and the other is listed as inactive. The iron wolf 8TB drives are functioning as they should. How do i get the system to recognize the 2nd M.2 card and make them both active on the suystem? Thanks, Anil
