synology DS220+ data & storage, plus media to plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-23-2022, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Sir,

I'm having a couple of problems with my NAS Synology DS220+ device? Firstly I have two 8TB hard drives that came with the device, how ever it only says I have 7TB not sure if I need to combind or something, I have tried grouping but still says only 7TB?
Secondly I have a full Plex account with approximately 10TB of media, I've been following your YouTube videos on transferring data and uploading media to Plex, however my files are still not showing on my plex?
Please please ease ? can you help I don't mind paying for you time and I don't mind you remote accessing to rectifying the issue.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kindest Regards

Tobias George

  Buying First NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-23-2022, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi

I'm looking to buy my first NAS system. I'm tired of having a draw of 1 to 2 TB hard drives and want to put everything onto one system, with some room to grow (expandable drives). I would also like the security of mirroring a drive incase one fails.
I'm looking for a 2 drive system, roughly 12 tbs for now. I use a PC and a MAC Book and am setting up a guitar manufacturing business in Woking. I am doing a lot of content filmed on my iPhone and editing the footage but would like the option of using my much more powerful PC to do the work.
It's my understanding that having a NAS system would allow me to use the PC an MAC in a much more stream line way. Perhaps having the NAS in the middle allows for better crowd system workflow. I would all like the option to access CAD files in Fusion and work on them from both he MAC and PC.

I don't know if I need a NAS or I can do with the WD Home system. I don't yet understand how I can utilise my workflow on a NAS between platforms, i.e do let the NAS do the commuting or do I pull a file into a computer and use the computer to do the work? I assume my computers are more powerful and contain the software so I guess that's self explanatory. What I mean is, do I really need that much power in a NAS unit if it's only going to be used for safe storage, organising photos, videos, music, CAD files and documents etc..

My two current choices are the

DS220+
DS220J
DS720+
WD Home Cloud (which I'm not sure is still supported having watched on of your videos on the product).

Kindest Regards

1st NAS for someone a bit techy
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-23-2022, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Gday,
Love the channel, honestly thought I’d watch 1-2 vids to get some recommendations but have ended up watching a lot more, lots of great info, and for what can be a dry subject you manage to keep it entertaining, so firstly THANKYOU!

Sorry if this is lengthy, just thought the background might help.

I’m looking at getting my first NAS, I first thought I just wanted some storage and backup, but your Vids have convinced me to spend a bit more because it can do a lot more, money isn't the major factor but I don’t want to go crazy.

Must have
Storage, I was thinking 4-5 disk (but Qnap have made me look at 6bay systems, as the price jump isn’t huge). Aiming at 20-30TB but future growth would be nice.
Network, even though 1gb network has been around for ever, 2.5 is taking over as mainstream, and 10g would be nice for some future proofing

Nice to have
Plex for a couple users on the same network (not for Streaming over the internet, Aussie internet wont cope with that).
Surveillance – 4-5 Cameras Home use, I wouldn’t do this if the NAS wasn’t capable.

Stuff I want to play.
Virtual Machines – I would use one for testing every now and then, but doubt I’ll leave anything running permanently.

I was originally thinking just get a Synology DS 1500 series, only because I’ve done a very basic setup of one for a friend and the 1522 looks like a good device, but now I understand the lack of GPU could be a factor, and the lack of built in higher speed network disappoints me. The software for Synology looks to me to be the best polished in the desktop NAS space.

The Asustor Lockerstor AS6706T, looks interesting I’d say the 4 M2s is overkill for me, I’d only use Caching, but I wouldn't complain to have the option, the Celeron CPU looks like a good option though, my concern is that Asustor doesn’t seem to have as good software and software support, feels like a Cheap knockoff situation.

The QNAP TS-673A, looks like the answer to me, honestly looks like an awesome NAS, but I can't find if it’s possible to fit a GPU and a 10G network card into the device, do you know if that’s possible?? I’m worried that the GPU may take up the 2 slots. Also again the Software/Apps doesn’t look as good as Synology, I don’t mind lots of options and having to set things up properly, but from what I read there are lots of bugs and general flakiness in the software?? (is this true?)

All of these endup around $1300 AUD(US$900), I don’t mind spending a little more for future proofing, but from what I can tell I don’t think I would need to.

Do you know of any other options I should look at?

  Connecting a Synology DS220+ to a Mac M1 using iSCSI/SMB
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-22-2022, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Team,

Thanks for providing a very useful way to ask NAS related questions. (Fantastic website and videos by the way!)

I'm looking to upgrade from my current NAS (1 bay QNAP) to a 2 bay DS220+ and access it via my Mac Mini M1 in order to do things like Time Machine / Files /Photos backups, while using the DS220+ as my future Plex Server instead of my Mac Mini.

Going through your YouTube channel, I came across episode #8 of the 'Synology NAS Setup Guide' where you connect to the SAN using iSCSI on a Windows PC.

Given I run a Mac M1 at home, I'm looking to see if you guys have connected a Synology SAN to a Mac before and if so, get your advice / recommendation on the best method (SMB or iSCSI) I should use to connect to the this new NAS (on my 1GB Wired LAN) from a performance point of view?  I have quite a large Photos collection which I access on a regular basis and so accessing this using the fastest method would be ideal.

Thanks for any help you can provide and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

NAS for TV server with PCIe passthrough
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-22-2022, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I'm looking forward to buy a NAS capable of PCI express passthrough in virtual machines.
I want to run TVheadend and due to the fact that there are no native drivers for DVB-C tuners nowadays, a virtual machine is required! There is a Chinese company who developed and 8 tuner PCI express card that I'm planning to use.
Do you know capable NAS to support DVB-C or at lease PCIexpress passthrough?
Thanks!

Big fan on YouTube,
Keep up the good work!

  Effective storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-21-2022, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Is 1522+ quick to find data? I’m using a small NAS today that really needs an upgrade in storage and power. I’m using the NAS as reference storage and saves quite a lot of video material that I later pick up and edit. I also have an extensive library of pdf-material (above 10k files) that I need to search rather often.

Best regards,

  1st NAS/photographer
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-21-2022, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

Have been subscribed to NAS Compares on YT for quite a while. Realistically, I know just enough to be dangerous...which means I know relatively little...ha. I have a Drobo 5D DAS configured with 5x4TB drives set for single disk redundancy and currently have about 10TB of mostly RAW photo data (as a wildlife photographer, it is growing fast and I'm likely set to start adding video too). I have waffled on which NAS to add for quite a while (haven't yet but keep leaning Synology as much because of software and SHR) and gone back and forth on just adding a newer DAS (I'm aware of Drobo's bankruptcy filing and won't go there). My Drobo has worked flawlessly for five years and I've increased storage to that current 4x5TB). Therefore, new DS1522+ or even 920+ (unless a newer 922+ may be coming)? I have also just upgraded to a Mac Studio from my old 27" iMac. Thought would be to use my older Drobo as an extra backup to the new NAS solution. I'm also laying some CAT6 cable in my house, anticipating future upgradability to 10gb. Many thanks.";}

Looking for a fast speed solution NASDAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-21-2022, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, So I am looking for a storage solution to store my files and sometimes edit off the drive as well, I am editor/colorist , i usually right work off Nvme SSD's ( I plan to put them in Raid 0 configuration) and have the backup to my NAS\DAS. Currently I work alone but in future I plan to expand my teams so expandability and future proofing is the key. My Workstation only has a 1G ethernet port. I plabn to use a RAID 5 configuration. Although I have my old pc lying around with i5 ,32GB RAM and cabinet with 5 Drive Slots, is truenas the way to go? I am not because I am very new to this and all very confusing, Please suggest a viable and best value for money option for this. Thanks a ton

  Synology Hyper Backup - slow
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-21-2022, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Rob,

Just wondering if you have heard of any complaints about Synology Hyper Backups almost doubling in time to complete the backup?

Have two offsite backup locations that the clients DS718+ NAS backs up to. Have verified network bandwidth to both locations (300/300Mbs  and 500/500Mbs links).  It is slow to both locations. What used to take 1-1/2 hours for nightly backup is now 3hrs.
Hard drives check out, network is good and backup integrity checks okay at both remote locations.

Resaerch hasn't revealed any relevant possibilities that I haven't verified and leads me to believe this may be due to an update from Synology DSM ver 4.

As always, appreciate your insight.
Thanks,
Robert";}
