  BYO NAS , Problem Waking Up
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-20-2022, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want to Replace My Old DNS-320 ShareCenter.
I have all the Goodies to make a Smashing Unit.
But Can't figure out How to Wake it up.
With the DNS-320, Once you Map your Network Drive ( in this case the nas ) , it's easy to do, just click on it and bingo a couple of seconds later it's awake.
Now all this is done without using wake on lan.
So my question is how does d-link do it with the dns-320, in windows 10 all i did was map it, no setting up wol.
I found setting up wol very picky and a pain to setup, and for me with 6 computers a Pain. I realise a standard computers motherboard is made differently to a nas, but there must be some way wake it up from a normal pc";}

  Nas now or wait for new nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-20-2022, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

HI see myself as an semi IT Pro, despite for my poor english

Over the past several years I have had several NASs from sonology - DS209+ DS211+ DS415 and most recently a Qnap TS-653Pro,
but my Qnap is now defective.. won't always boot up - just writes system booting for several hours.
Data has been saved by FTP from the NAS.. which took quite a long time ?

My final question is: should I wait for the new synology DS923+ or continue with Qnap?

As written earlier, my primary focus is photos, movies and securing our data via some backup.

Also thanks for the cool youtubes - Keep up the good work

  Moving iPad photo library to a NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-19-2022, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, i want to move my entire photo library from ipad to a nas. About 700 Gb of photos of different sizes from 2mb screenshots to big 60 mb raws. Then use it from the ipad through wifi connection using local network browsers like FileBrowserGO or File Explorer. I was thinking about a 6-8 trays Qnap with core i5-core i7 and m2 ssd drives for caching. Will this give me a seemless operation with no lags or delays for making preview icons, instant opening photos, zooming in/out, browsing, swiping left or right etc. In other words is there such a nas that would give the same seemless operation as on an ipad itself? Without cacheing the photos on the ipad. What would be the bottleneck here - the wifi or the nas latency? My older nases were very latent when working with many small photos, although fast with large files transfer.
Thank you!";}

  Synology Drive Advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-19-2022, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I've been following your YouTube series "Synology Nas Setup Guide" but I've become a bit stuck and wondered if you could give any advice?!

I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2012 running OS 10.15 and my nas is the Synology DS220+. I want to use Synology Drive but it seems the on demand sync option is not available on a mac of this age (OS 12 and later I believe). So without on demand sync, what is the best way to stream files to my mac without having to sync everything and taking up space locally? I want to be able to access everything on the nas both at home and at work (the nas lives at work) but I don't want everything pinned to the mac. I use Google Drive currently which offers this type of file streaming and I'm wanting to replace that.

Thanks! And thanks for the YouTube series, it has been very helpful.

  Reolink DUO2 review

I did not hear you mention if the DUO2 uses 1 or 2 synology surveillance station licenses? The original DUO required two so it is a big plus if the DUO2 only uses 1.";}

  home NAS recommendation request
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-19-2022, 02:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking for a recommendation on a home NAS server.

My rack:
1. Ubiquity Dream Machin Pro SE with 8TB surveilance footage hard drive, (will store my Unifi Protect camera footage)
2. 48 port enterprise POE switch, all 2.5gbe ports, with 10gbit sfp+ uplinks
3. Internet will be fiber internet 1gbit synchronous

For the NAS, I was planning on:
1. hosting my own email server for my domain (family only... no business case)
2. AdGuard for DNS filtering/tracker filtering 3. Homebridge for connecting all smart devices to Apple Homekit
4. backing up our apple devices and our photos, also photo/video editing for home use only (family albums, etc.)
5. not really sure beyond that what i'll be doing.. but would like a little headroom in case i find something else i'd like to dabble in as far as apps/options on the NAS server.";}

  HDD compatibility for Synology 1515+ (Drive Compatibility Warning FIX)
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-18-2022, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need to replace the old WD Red HDD in my Synology 1515+
I read using WD RED Plus is better for my Raid 5 system, However, when I check the compatibility in the Synology site, the DS1515+ is compatible with WD RED and WD RED Pro, and not included for RED Plus. I didn't expect this and already ordered the drives. What is your opinion? the Red Plus will work? ";}

  Unofficial SSD Cache on DS920+
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-18-2022, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello gentlemen,

I have let the SSD Cache advisor run its course and it came back with a recommended 240GB Read-Write Cache. Unfortunately, the Ironwolf 510 240GB in the Compatibility List is not available in Amazon/EBay so I would like to search for alternatives. You have tested few unofficial RAM upgrade scenarios but I have not seen anything on the SSD Cache space. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

  compatibility
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-18-2022, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, hope is the right place to make this question.

i own a synology nas ds414j with two old wd red 6tb (efrx) in a SHR Raid. One drive failed, so, without checking too much, i bought a ready available new wd red plus 6tb. When i tried to repair the storage pool, a compatibility warning has appeared. Looks like the wd red plus is compatible from the synology series 16 onward. Not in the list of compatibility for the ds414. After following your videos i learned that both the old wd red and the new wd red plus should be CMR. So, would it be a good idea to pop the red plus in anyway, to pair with the old wd red? Or is it better not to? And in this case what should i do? Give up and buy another hd, maybe the red pro instead (witch is compatible with the ds 414j)? Or buy another old EFRX , witch is costly and hard to find?
Thank you thank you thank you
Sergio
