pre-Synology DSM7 versus post-Synology DSM7 xml editing options |

Your instructional videos are excellent. Thank you. My installation is running perfectly (touch wood), due in large part to your cautionary tales of common mistakes to avoid. One block to enjoyment introduced with my upgrade to DSM7 Beta is that I have no accessible Plex meta database to play with. I access everything via http://ip address:32400/web, such as libraries, pms logs, but there is no plugin support metadata plugin database located anywhere! I uninstalled my windows based installation/server because it kept blocking the web server and competing wiht the remote access settings. I liked editing my photo tags via DB Browser for SQLite, but can't find any current database. It's so weird. Any suggestion you could find the time to toss my way would be very much appreciated. All the online community sources do not seem to have caught up to Synology DSM7 Beta as yet. Thank you for your time.

Still-253d caching with ssd as storage |

Hi,
I’m upgrading from a q a ts-251 to ts-253d.
I have been using 2x2tb ssd and will use some new ones in the new NAS.
I have a spare 240gb ssd which I wonder can I use for caching?
I largely use the NAS as a Plex server, so I guess the data would be slower initially as it caches and then not used again so the cache would be of no use?
The problem I’m trying to solve, is can I make use of this smaller ssd to boost performance?
Or am I better off setting up the 2x2tb ssd in a particular way to get the best performance?
Many thanks
Ian.

Synology 5+ Bay with Intel GPU |

Hi Robbie / Eddie,
Just a quick Q or two to ensure I haven't lost the plot...
Am I right in saying that - after a tonne of research - Synology do not have a NAS (5 Bays - 8 Bays) that has an Intel processor with embedded GPU......... with the exception of the mentally priced DS1621xs+ ?
All of the 5-8 bay Synology NAS I've looked at (including the newly released 1522+) all seem to have a Ryzen processor - which from your excellent YT videos - is a bag of sh*t when it comes to transcoding past 1080p ?
How can that be? What are the Synology head's smoking?
I was hoping to get my hands on a 5-6 Bay NAS and would prefer to stay with Synology over QNAP, but Ryzen in a NAS is a deal breaker for me. Thought the 1522+ would have come with a GPU celeron and that would have done the job - even with 1GBe - but not Ryzen. Is there another Synology option?
2nd Q - is there any sign of the 922+ (923+ at this point) becoming a reality?
(I did look at the 653D and the supposed 664D from QNAP, but again - would rather stick with Synology unless there was a solid case for not...
Thanks gents.

QNAP SSD benefit debate |

Hi there, huge fan of the channel and always detailed info that is given!
Just got a new TS-873AeU-4G-EU that I immediately upgraded with 64GB ECC and the 25GbE networking card.
I might have made a mistake on not going for a QM2 card instead since it only has one PCI port, unfortunately, but I needed the SFP for my Ubiquiti Aggregation switch haha.
Anyways, I have already put this question with QNAP that will never understand the question since they only reply with a standard response or drive compatibility. This also despite my second attempt in Mandarin since they're based in Taiwan, so I figured you might now better anyway:
I got the latest QuTS Hero version on this machine where I was wondering whether the system would benefit from putting it on the 2x PCIe NVME M.2 slots versus putting it on 2 regular SATA SSD's in the drive bays. Like; would it make a substantial difference or is QuTS not able to utilise the gen3 speeds anyway?
I do not really need caching as I know they're originally meant for this, but since I saw someone running QTS on the QM2 card, it is possible to do so.
In the specsheet they also talk about it being a Gen3x1 but there is no x1... so I assume they meant x4 (lanes).
1. So long story short: is it beneficial to put QuTS on PCIe SSD over SATA SSD's in terms of speed, or better off leaving m.2 for cache.
2. I don't understand how WD SATA SSD has almost the same pricing as the PCIe line, but offers only 6-800 TBW vs their staggering 1PB on the PCIe. Would I then also be better off buying PCIe to SATA adapter cards to also use those SSD's in the regular bays?
Massive cheers to you and your time reading this!
Best regards

Do you have a video covering Firewall setup. Have a firewall enabled on my router. Do I need the Synology firewall enabled as well.
There appears to be mixed messages on this topic circultaing on the internet. Synology pdf manual is of no help to a newbie NAS user.
Thanks in advance

My asustor as-304t has given good service, but has always been underpowered, and now unloved by asustor. e.g. stuck on xbmc rather than kodi. I like the ability to play media on the tv via the hdmi connection. I'm using 4 4GB disks in raid-5.
I'd like recommendations on any nas that can replace it and add new functionality and better performance.
Thanks

How to maximise data transfer speeds over the 1Gbit LAN speed at home |

My question may seem basic but I can not find much information. I’ve watched your videos dozens of times and I’ve leaned a lot. Something keeps escaping my knowledge….
I don’t think I understand how fast my home network speed should be compared to my internet speeds. Am I doing something wrong?
If I have 1gb internet speeds why don’t files transfer/write from my computer to my NAS at those speeds? Assuming I have all the best hardware, why does the internet speed test (on the NAS itself) show 1gbps but when writing from my computer to my NAS it’s only speeds of around 50mbps.
Quick snapshot:
Computer: tried on numerous computers but my main computer is top of the line 32-core AMD, 10gb lan card (and/or WiFi 6) 2080ti gpu, Aorus Gen 4 NVME ssd, 128gb RAM 3600, etc…
NAS drives Tried:
1. QNAP 672XT (i5, 8gb Ram) brand new
2. Western Digital My Cloud Mirror NAS
3. Western Digital EX4100 NAS
Why are my Internet speeds are 1gb but my home network speeds are 40mbps-50mbps when writing from a computer to a NAS? If I do an internet speed test on the QNAP (itself) it will be close to 1gbps (typically around 700-800mbps) but again if I copy a 4K video file (for example) the transfer speed will only be around 50mbps.
There is no bottleneck (Cat6 and Cat8 cables have been tried) and I’ve tried a 2.5gbps switch and a 10gbps switch, and even tried going directly from the cable modem to the NAS (using the modem’s 4 ports) to connect each computer and NAS (to make sure nothing else is bottle necking it).
Regardless of what I do I can not get more than 50mbps when moving files to or writing from a NAS.
Am I just confused on how fast my home network should be? Can my computer write to a NAS at GB speeds? What effects those speeds if it’s not the computer or the NAS (or even my internet speed)? For example, if my home didn’t have an internet service provider and I just wanted a home network for my home computer to write to a NAS on my network. -What would the speed be when writing to the NAS on that home network?
I don’t want to babble on anymore and hope my questions makes sense…
Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but I can’t seem to find any info on this basic question.

Processor Speed for PLEX - DS1522+ vs DS1621+ |

Hello,
I am running a home-based Plex server and would like the ability to efficiently transcode in 4k. I have been comparing the Synology DS1522+ and the DS1621+. If nothing else, I prefer the design of the 1621+ and also the extra drive bay would be nice, but not necessary. I also like the ability to upgrade the network port to 10GbE. Processor speed however is where I need advice.
I noticed that the 1621+ may have a less powerful CPU than the 1522+ and I'm wondering if this is true. The 1621+ has a quad-core 2.2Ghz, but the 1522+ has a dual core 2.6 (3.1 turbo) Ghz... I'm not quite technical enough to know which would be faster of the two? Ultimately, I am going to be purchasing the model that has the faster processor and that can transcode 4k Plex most efficiently.
Any advice would be appreciated.

DS920+ |

We currently have a RS3617xs but we are running into issues with 4k transcoding. On paper, with my limited understanding, it looks like it should outperform and do a better job than the oft-recommended DS920+ but maybe I'm missing something?
