  923+ or 1621+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-22-2022, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello!

I’m looking into replacing my 415+ with newer model. Which one you would recommend in term as of better performance? The main use will be file storage and Synology Photos, may be 1 vm . Primarily I do want Photos to be lightening fast because on the current 415+ has awfully long preview load time
I’m more geared towards 1621+ but with release of 923+ I’ve started to worry if I’m buying up to date peace of equipment?

Thanks a lot for your help! I’m always enjoying your videos and you made me passionate about NAS. Thanks a lot and wishing a great success to your YouTube channel.

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 DAS Solutions
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-22-2022, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi

I currently have 3x6TB SATA drives configured in RAID 5 with Intel RST. This is on a new W11 PC. I would like to move to a hardware based RAID system, but I have no need for a NAS (I only have one computer). Performance is a consideration and I would like to make use of the fastest USB port on my PC (USB 3.2 Gen 2x2).

I'm struggling to find a DAS enclosure that would use the speed of that port. Any recommendations? Or would the SATA drives be the limiting factor rather than the USB port? Or should I just make use of 2.5gbe port and go NAS (though I expect to pay a premium for NAS features that I won't use).

I use my PC mostly for editing photos and 4k video, but my Lightroom catalogue and the video files (while being edited) all sit on an M2 SSD. So the DAS is mostly for static or archive data. Read performance is more important than write.

Any thoughts?

PS I found you by watching your excellent review of the QNAP TS-464.

Google photo backup with MARS application
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-22-2022, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - No Replies

Hi,
I followed your instructions (https://nascompares.com/2022/11/21/how-to-properly-backup-your-google-photos-to-qnap-nas/Wink and copied the photo from google to my QNAP NAS using the MARS app. However, the creation date of all files is the current copy date. Therefore, all files from the STATION PHOTO and QuMagie are displayed on the current day. Is it possible to copy photos while preserving metadata (photo date)?
Thank you

  Plex Media Server
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-22-2022, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there,

I wonder if you can help me. I’m looking to replace an old existing desktop workstation that I’ve been using as a Plex media server for the last 6 years. I’ve got quite a collection of 4K HEVC video that’s spread across 2x 12 tb Iron Wolf HDs and 18tb Exos drive. A lot of the time I access this media remotely, on a connection with potential upload speeds of 200mb. I’m sure you’ve worked out that I have no idea what I’m doing. I’ve done my best to research the most appropriate NAS that I can scale over time, and don’t particularly want to ideally make use of the HDs that I have currently have. I’m looking for a NAS that I can keep adding to, that will not need replacing in the next 5 years, and can handle multiple 4K streams and will backup on its own. I’d be really grateful if you could share any advise with me. Thank you in advance.

Matt

  Ps5 cooling

Will the ps5 ElecGear heatsink you tested fit on top of a Seagate 530 w/heatsink SSD installed in a PS5. If yes is it redundant to have a heatsink SSD with an additional heatsink installed instead of the standard metal m. 2 cover the ps5 comes with?

  DS920+ vs DS923+
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-22-2022, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello I have been following your YouTube video comparisons on the DS920+ vs the DS923+. I was going to wait to purchase the DS923+ because I figured the latest release would be better than a model which is already 3 years old. The reason I am looking for a NAS is we own a home based business and we have data stored on too many devices and cloud services like Google Drive. We want to amalgamate all our data in one convenient location. We also want to make use of the raid as we are always concerned with losing data. So the DS923+ seemed like an ideal fit, however after watching your YouTube videos we learned many users of these NAS devices use them with PLEX. Although we aren't using PLEX it is something we are interested in. We currently subscribe to a TV satellite service, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. We would be interested in lowering our expenditure on these services if we could have access to good content. So we are unsure if the benefits of the 923+ are really even needed of our use. If we did purchase a DS920+ will we be able to use it with the latest version of DSM? Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

  NAS to NAS backup
Posted by: David Morrow - 11-22-2022, 03:03 AM - Forum: Backup Solutions - No Replies

One thing that has been impressed upon me by Robbie and Eddie is that RAID is not a backup. With that in mind, I've relegated my QNAP to backup duties for my Synology. One thing that really baffles me is that on a home network with mostly Windows devices that easily communicate with each other, just how difficult it can be for two NAS's to communicate with each other. And backing up one to another is a major pain. NASCompares did videos on backing up a Synology to a QNAP and one on backing up a QNAP to a Synology. This process uses Rsync and one of the NAS's native apps. My limited experience in doing this was just awful. Awkward software, a bunch of files and folders at the destination that I didn't want or expect. And finding that I needed to enable my previously disabled Admin account to delete this junk. Scratch that.

Previously, because my Windows PC was usually running, I continued to use FreeFileSync (FFS) to do my backups. I use Windows Task Scheduler to run it once each week without any user intervention. There are reasons why I do it only once each week but won't go into that here. FFS is extremely flexible and easy to configure. And it's free.

Finally, I found SyncThing. I haven't tried it yet but it may just be better than FFS. And from the YouTube videos that I've watched, it too should be very flexible. But much more complicated than FFS.

Whatever my final choice is, it won't be Rsync.

I'd love to hear how other users back up their NAS's to another NAS.

Not able to connect to or find NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-21-2022, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey NAS Compares,
I needed some advice if you can help with please.
I have a DS218+. For few weeks now, I am not able to find or connect to my NAS at all. Even connecting the NAS (on synology's advice) directly via ethernet does not work. Synology thinks that probably there is a fault with the main system board. But since the NAS is out of warranty now, this is what they replied with - "we would not be able to assist with this issue as we do not provide a repair service for out of warranty units. In this event, you may wish to find a 3rd party company who offer repairs on Synology products (though, we are unable to recommend any companies for this)". Basically they want me to buy a new NAS from them.

Do you know if this can be fixed? Do you know of any 3rd party service provider near London who can help me with this? To me everything else seems to be working fine. I really don't want to buy a new one and add to e-waste if this can be fixed.

Appreciate your help on this.
Sushil

true answer for me DS923+ vs TS-464
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-21-2022, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (4)

Hello.

Although I've been passionately following your content for a while, and I've made a lot of progress along the way thanks to your valuable advice, but after my last message (2 days ago) I find myself somewhere at the beginning again, desperately looking for an answer that is "right for me".. And here I'm packing up my whole confusion asking for your help. Please forgive my long message and I really hope you can help me out - Thanks for Everything Smile

From Day1, my first NAS )WD-EX4) hasn't met any of my expectations (I still wish it was just a simple RAID1 DAS).. The research i've made back then clearly was not enough.. So, lately I started diving again into NAS world (mainly yours) and I ended up waiting for the 923+.

* I have always been a PC user (a "power"-user building, installing, maintaining, managing..). I still a PC user.. but I cannot forget how great it felt to just "let-go" those "power" messing-arounds and tuning-ups when I had my Macbook..
* With mobiles, I still deal (actually well) with some Android devices in the family, but as for me, I'm totaly 100% an iOS'.. It's that "let-go" again, and the solid reasons for being confident going with it.. It's that feeling that everything is just fine in there with no need to dig in.. It "feels" robust, secure, reliable and well-supported.. Suddenly I don't care anymore about the hardware specs.. At the end, It's the software that serves those hardware capabilities to the user (a huge advantage when they match!).. So it's the bottomline sleek and smooth "user-experience".. and since it's exclussive, it's an "easy" choise for me, even when it comes with a price of continuiously missing some feature/s..

I believe the above explains well why i've been easily convinced that my answer is one of the Synology systems, without the need to dive deeper into other aspects.. I'de really love it if it stayed that way, but the new 923+ has made it really hard for me!
It'll accept my Red+ HDDs, but not my 970Evo+ NVMes (maybe soon - maybe never), and I cannot be sure about any reasonably priced 3rd party RAM (even if it worked for now).. And as I had to dive deeper (as explained before), I find my self deeply dissappointed with those 1Gbps ports, and even worse, I was exposed to new aspects, features and models (that I may be needing actually) that were added to my confusion, resulting in even bigger mess and questions on what I really need!!! Sorry again for this huge message. This is why I REALLY need your help Sad

1* SHR is exclussive to Synology and can be useful for future mixing of drives..

2* ECC RAM can help preventing some work-time errors..
Is it exclussive to some Synology models?

3* File Systems..

      - EXT4 is for most of QNAP models (QTS)
business-level and fast.. shines when larg number of drives..
it sholud be lacking of Snapshots, but HOW snapshots is listed under those QNAP models specs?

      - BTRFS is for Synology models, a bit slower but recommended for theses "non-high" models..
it has snapshots, drives pool and is SSD optimizations.
but your video states "BTRFS (EXT4)" ? two file systems?

      - ZFS is the best.. higher buisniss-level, secure and fast..
        adds software protections like COW..
can really shine with higher RAM and drives..
is limited for some "higher" QNAP models (QuTS hero)..
optional future support for "mid" models, will require initializing the drives..
but your video states "ZFS (EXT4)" ? two file systems?

4 * RAID.. although all supported (depending on number of drives).
but now i'm confused about RAID 5 or 6.. some says they're not recommended..
they say you'de better proceed from RAID1 to RAID10..
and although it's not exclussive for ZFS, why are RAID5/6/10 called ZRAID? or not?

5 * containers (dockers) + VM.. i had it determind before.. now i'm confused again..
which file system and which CPU will perform better?
and as we're here, what about Virtual Machines?
and as i dived into this (never thought of this before),
can i deploy my full-stack web projects in here instead of GCP?
it usually contains a front in REACT (nodejs) and a back in JAVA11 with some DB like MySQL..
this may be a game changer in my decision..

6*  BRAND/MODEL..
not only that i'm looking for deciding what brand should I go with, but now I also questioning the model range..
maybe I can benifit from a higher model rather than the 4bay "mid plus" range i've been questioning (646 / 923+)..
in this case  can spend more.. but without your help i'm not sure what is "right" for my NAS needs??
suddenly I read about the 1522+ not seeing any benifit for me that'll come out of it ..
4 ports of 1Gbps?? 5th drive for RAID5/6 (see questioning that above)..??
as for QNAP.. will it be the h474? i cannot find it.. not even the price of it..

7 * my other NAS needs?
a reliable secure NAS for all my files..
especially when I'm on LAN.. i'de rather working on the NAS..
knowing it's centralized.. mirrored.. available.. fast.. private..
accessing that centralized place from multi devices..
      programming projects aceesed from PC/MAC..
deployments (including containers an VM explained before..)
browsing videos and photos REALLY FAST (especially when on LAN) from PC/MAC/iOS devices/Android-TV..
streaming music to car Android system..
      backing up (and syncing) PC/MAC/iOS..
somehow replacing my google/apple storage plan.. possible?
iOS devices neds that storage plan mainly because of whatsapp backups Sad

8 * if you still have power.. soon (can be delayed) i'll be using  switch/router containing MULTI_WAN + MULTI_GIG ..

SORRY for extremely long message..
Thanks for Everything Smile
