Hello, I just purchased a new Synology ds1621+. And I love it so far. But my issue is that Plex can't do hardware transcoding. My question is, what are my best options? In my home, I have two sixty-five inch TVs. and two 32" TVs which I use plex. four computers, two smartphones, and one table I would like to stream to. I will use my ds1621+ for backups and photo editing, file sharing, and storing my edited videos.
I will need my NAS to be a multimedia Hub. I have previously owned a Qnap, but I love Synology software. I do love the way Qnap handles multimedia.
Looking for options:
Option 1: Purchase a 2bay or 4bay Synology or Qnap that handles hardware transcoding. I can use Rsync between the two.
Option 2: Return ds1621 for another NAS, but I think on the Synology side, only the ds220 and 420 support hardware transcoding, but I will need something that I can add 2.5 or 10gbe. I am using a 10gBe switch.
Any suggestions or recommendations?

I have a Alienware Aurora R12 i7 32GB Ram & GeForce RTX 3060 which I currently use for my Plex server. It is also my at home computer for everything I do. I keep my files on a Drobo FS. I just purchased a DS923+ to replace my drobo and wondered if I should move my Plex server to the Synology?
I currently just use Plex to stream my own movies and music.
Thanks as always.
Happy New Year!
Phil

Hello, I would like some advice on hard drive types & setup for a new DS1522+. Currently I have 3x 6TB WD Red drives in an older Netgear ReadyNAS which I will be moving to the 1522+.
I have purchased a new 10TB WD Red. I'm now thinking of also buying a 4TB WD Purple.
I'm considering setting up as follows to optimise space used.
SHR - the 3x 6TB drives for general storage
Basic - 10TB drive for plex media server (files can be backed up rather than raid)
Basic - 4 TB Purple for my 4 cameras. (I have SD cards in all cameras anyway (7 days) & can back up footage if required rather than raid.
Do you see any issues setting up this way in the 1522+ ?
Appreciate your views.
Thanks & regards
Ewen

Hello,
I have the TerraMaster F2-210 but will be switching to Synology DS220J (yes, I want the 220J not the 220+). I have two 4TB Seagate Ironwolf HDDs which are configured in a RAID1 array using ext4 file system.
My question is will I be able to just take the HDDs from TerraMaster, plug them into Synology and have them work fine or will I have to do some reformatting?

How many cameras can I safely use on my DS920 plus Synology NAS? I run currently a virtual station, Plex, and Active backup. I have 12GB of RAM, or should I instead buy the DVA 1622?

Hello,
I would like to have a home NAS setup with RAID 5 ( or similar ). 4-6 bay. I want the ability to do backups ( to CD/DVD ? ) no need to spawn off virtual servers unless it is helpful. what is a good CPU / Mem requirement. What is the best interface to connect to a computer. Nice and effective software/gui. Secure. reliable. available thru WiFi. Best disks. I use to be a storage SA many many years ago ( Datadomain / Sun A1000 and used Raid 5 + 1 hot spare ). This will be used to store Music/Picts/Videos/Docs ( basic stuff ). I have a new DELL XPS 8950 with 32GB mem with a Intel i9-12900. so I have good strong desktop. i want something that will be good ( or have updates available ) for at least for a few years ( min 5 ? )
I understand that disks may not last for that long ( thus thinking hot spare - or available extra disks ) what happens if you have a 4-6 bay NAS for a few years and a disk dies and the model is no longer avail?
Help
Happy New Year

I have a new QNAP 664. I have a couple of old SSDs 180 GB and 256 GB. After my QNAP purchase, 3x 16TB drives, and 16GB RAM, I am on a budget.
Would it be worth it to install one or both SSDs for some performance boost?
Enjoy your videos very much.
Neville.

I'm a professional videographer who enjoys a spot of game development in my spare time. Both of these activities require large amounts of storage capacity for footage, sound effects, textures, and 3D models, as well as archiving the finishing results.
I'm looking to buy my first NAS drive, probably a 4-bay in RAID5. At the moment, only my desktop PC needs access, so I'm planning to use this NAS as a DAS. Ideally, I'd like to be able to edit 4K video footage directly off the DAS.
This is my first foray into NAS drives, so the user-friendly interface of Synology is attractive, but I'm not sure which model suits me best. The 923+ is new and gives me the option to upgrade to 10GbE in the future, but the 920+ has integrated graphics processing, which could be useful. Then there's the 420+, 420j, and 418 models, which whilst older might still be suitable and more cost-effective.
Any advice for a NAS novice?

| A RAID 5 or 6 for Mylio Photo Vault for 36 -45 TB image files |

I need to know what drives and drive enclosure is the simplest and most reliable for an 81 year old retired MD Ph.D who is fully alert and functioning but zero experience in command line instructions , although I could to simple tasks if I was told to do so.
I am expert in Photoshopand other photography software & need to consolidate 30 years of files - 40 drives ranging:
0.5 TB, 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, 3TB, 4TB, 6TB.
The 8, 10, 12 & 18 TB HD have been mostly invested by linkage in a Mylio catalog on a MacBook Pro M1Max with a 2TB drive and 32 GB RAM. Each generation of hard drives likely contains 60-100% of previously used smaller hard drives. So it could be that once the current bunch of 8, 10, 12 and 18 TB drives are logged into the MacBook Pro Mylio catalog by a list of links to those drives, then I can instruct Mylio to copy ALL those files to the RAID (that I plan to create with your advice), and simultaneously, Mylio will deduplicate and I should end up a one copy of each image
