Hi
Thank you NAS Compares for all you do to educate and help the community—you make a real difference and cut through the BS... with a bit of humour along the way too!
I'm now the proud owner of a TVS-H674-i5-32G—an impulse purchase on available sock after months of deliberating. My use case is amateur photography/video editing plus other usual benefits of NAS. I also have only two macOS users, one with 10Gbe into QXG-10G2T-X710 and the rare QNA-T310G1T 10Gbe Thunderbolt adapter.
My question is around the NVMe drives I'd like to use with QTS in a r/w cache configuation. Does it make any sense to go with Gen4 NVMes versus going with something safe, and still fast, like the WD Red SN700s? My thinking is that I'm going to max-out the 10Gbe with about 1,000 Mb/s because of the single 10Gbe connection, so what would be the point of spending extra money on Gen4 NVMes, which are faster, but that's not where my bottleneck is going to be.
If in the future I could get a cheap DUAL Thunderbolt 3 10Gbe connection, which don't seem to exist at reasonable prices yet, then maybe 2,000 Mb/s might be possible, but that still seems seems well within the capabilities of Gen3 NVMes at around 3 Gb/s internally within the NAS.
Any other solutions to try and get faster throughput to macOS seem prohibitively expensive, like 25Gbe setups requiring a lot more hardware at huge cost.
My hope is to hang on to this beast for a number of years swapping out/in bits over time, although I've just the price of the extended warranty for just two extra years and nearly choked!
Your thoughts and comments are appreciated...
Thank you

10Gbe Nas Drive that is fast and made well |

Hello, I'm looking at this configuration and wondering if this is the best choice for today’s market and the CPU speed, memory, 10 Gbe speed, the overall expansion.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B4XYN1PB
24 TB would be good enough 36 TB seems better for backup revisions and or spitting the system into different use cases.
My concerns with Synology are they seem to be Apple like and I’m not one that likes to be controlled at all. Maybe there is a workaround / patches to not be forced into their overpriced hardware and/or maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree.
Not trying to discount Synology, they have a great product it seems, but the need to make everything proprietary is just not how I work.
I’m ok with building my own as well, as long as the job gets done, the quality is good, it’s fast and the price makes sense. Outside of that I have no idea what to look at; it’s been years since I tried to build my own system.
The last NAS I owned was a ReadyNas, betore they got cheap, it was built well, but beyond slow and thus I stayed away, whwen the board died until technology changed allot as I could never move the data. External drives and syncing has become beyond outdated and I want out now.
Here is the thing; you seem you seem to have a very vast knowledge of just about everything made in the NAS world. I would love to have your advice on what would be good choice(s); I’m honestly overwhelmed by choice right now.
Sadly I just can’t buy something that is not built well or though out well, not sure why I’m this way, so I just go without, don’t get older, you know what things used to be like and now everything becomes junk.
Synology DiskStation DS1621xs+ seems to be well made, I'm still digging in and yet to find anythimg that compares yet. Seems like it's always a trade off.
Thanks so much for all your time, advise and any efforts are greatly appreciated.

Hi, you mentioned in your video that you could use 18Tb or bigger drives in this NAS. The Synology compatibility page for this device is quite limited. Would it be OK to use WD Red Pro 18Tbx 4 or Seagate Ironwolf Pro 18Tb x 4?
Or do you have any other suggestions? The Synology drives are quite a bit more expensive.
Thanks,
Andy

Dead Synology NAS |

Hi! I love your informative reviews of many Nas!
I have a question about my Synology NAS, I thought you are the best person to go to for these kinds of questions.
I have a Synology 1219+ that just died. I've been on support with with Synology and we came to the conclusion that the motherboard is dead, just after 3 years of use. I've tried ram, new PSU, Remove defective drives, etc. Nothing will work.
my question is: What can I do with this system? Is there service that can revive the board? or,
Can I somehow mode the system with other board, or anything to make some sort of use out of this 1300 dollar paperweight?
Lastly, I'm going to buy either the 1221+ or the 1812+.
is there any difference in term of longevity if the conditions was ideal? or, is there any major difference in terms of any features in terms of softwares? I'm mostly using it for Drive Sync.
Thanks in advance, I hope to hear back from you soon!

I am new to working g with a.NAS. I bought an old second hand Qnap TS-669L 6 bay nas. I use it mainly for SABnzbd usenet and unpacking stuff. I don't use it as a Plex server. I play movies on an Apple TV and I log in to the Nas. The software and interface on the Qnap I don't like that much. What Nas do you 6 bay nas do you recommend? Thank in advance,
Floris

Dell XPS-8900 Plex Server vs Synology DS920+ or DS1520+ |

I am currently running plex media server on my Dell XPS-8900 pc with the following specs:
Intel® Core™ i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz 4.01 GHz
16 GB Ram
Windows 10Pro, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor.
I have tried to tweak different settings within PMS to allow my system to serve as a viable PMS. At times, I continue to get buffering when watching videos that are either in 1080P less when watching on my home network (ethernet cable). I have watched the system dashboard and my system does not seem to ever be really ever taxed but yet I get buffering on occasions. I also get messages at time that my Network is not fast enough; I restart my client player and then it starts playing the file correctly again. When I look at Synology DS920+ or the DS1520+ units that seem to have great reviews acting a PMS, they seem to have hardware specs that don’t match what I am currently running even though my system is about 6+ years old.
So my questions to you are:
Why would a Synology DS920+ unit be expected to run better than my current PC? Just trying to make sure I don’t invest in a mid-level nas system and still have buffering due to other issues in my set-up that are the root cause of my inability to run any content without local streaming. i.e. is there another way to test my network to confirm my PC media server is the actually bottle neck or not?
Does the DS1520+ add anything that is meaningful vs the DS920+ for a Plex Media Server?

I am considering setting up a NAS system for Video Editing. I work on a multitude of projects from Social Media to Feature films. I'm currently working on various external drives. Now that I have about 5o or so different HD floating around (1Tb-24Tb), I want to consolidate most of them into one source. I was for the longest time considering the Sandisk Shuttle XL but noticed that I can build out a NAS system for half the cost (if not less), but I'm not familiar with a NAS system setup. There are a lot of variables that I am unsure of. In my research, for video editing, everyone seems to point to Synology DS1621/1821, which has a few nice expansion units. I'm thrown however by the 10Gb ether cards, they have 4 for the device, no idea which is best. Not to rattle on about the device I'm leaning towards considering I'm still budgeting. Considering I'm working with everything from 1080p to 4k and I am still unsure about the throughput with 4k files (but I'll probably work mostly with proxies) and I am also confused with the cache and how that could affect my workflow, does it need to be added/upgraded? What would be the best raid setup for video editing?
I'm mainly working on a MacPro 2019, (96Gb ram/1Tb SSD/3.2GHz 16 core Intel Xeon W processor/Two Radeon Pro W5700X) I have various other computers that will be connecting, Macbookpro an iMac, and possibly one windows machine.

I currently has a qnap TS-251. I use it for data storage and retrieval but it is primarily used for PLEX server. Plex is access via Roku in my home so I run into transcoding issues. I have been told that the ts-251 is a weak NAS for PLEX transcoding. So I want to purchase new QNAP with the power to transcode whatever I through at it so PLEX and Roku are happy.
