  plex server setup on Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-01-2022, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

hi, I was watching/learning your YT video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUXJFu1LtJ4), and I have questions:

1. what if my Plex Server looks nothing like yours after the first five minutes? how do I reset?
2. I noticed while in Plex interface, you are logged in to an account...that's not covered...

Thanks for your time!

Nick

  Synology 1522+ VS 1621+
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-01-2022, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello Gentlemen,
I appreciate your contribution in the field of data storage.
Your content has tremendously helped me thus far (by far more than any other single source), but now I am in a predicament: Synology DS1522+ vs DS1621+.

I’ll make this quick as I’m sure you have more interesting things, perhaps the world cup, than replying to messages.

I thought I had this in the bag and was going to make a purchase of the 1621+ during Black Friday, but there’s more to it between these two servers that I just don’t know which would serve me best. Let me explain what my needs are.
I will initially run one NAS with SHR2, four Seagate IronWolf Pro (probably 16TB each if I still catch them on sale). I will initially fill them up with 5TB of data. I am a photographer, graphic designer, videographer and am now studying in grad school majoring in IT and security. I want to have an organized catalog of family and client work; within each separate folders of respective dates. Anyway, I will want to store my images or video clips on the NAS and work from them. Not right after the shoot, but say sometime down the road. Which will have an edge in render times of 60 megapixel images, 1080p / 4K video clip? I gave this as an example thinking it’s more demanding than writing my research paper from the NAS. Also, would a 10Gbps connection improve anything for me, or would the money be better spent on more cache or RAM?
I will start with four users (family), aside from the root. I am the only one who will edit images and videos, others will back up their data and view our memories.
I would like to share content, such as edited images and videos with my family and clients.
Eventually, I’ll back up everything, and buy another NAS to have each sync on a daily basis. At the moment I think that will be a viable option–but I am open to your suggestions.
So that’s it in a nutshell. I am torn between the two servers, and would like to hear your opinion, or maybe you would recommend something else? The 920+ or 923+ would still support SHR2 and be future-proof, but maybe that’s too much to consider and I’d be better off with a bigger NAS.
THANK YOU very much.

NAS for 4k video editing team
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-30-2022, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

Been watching a few of your videos, we're looking for our first NAS so that the editing team can better work on the videos we product.

I've been finding accurate information difficult to obtain, so I really appreciate you providing this type of service.

Our editing team has at this moment 3 editors, with the prospect of getting a few more people in the next 1 to 2 years.

I think our doubt is more if the CPU can handle it more than the capacity of the NAS. We were inclined to a NAS like the QNAP TS-435XeU, we do value the rackmount capability.

Appreciate if you could give us some hints,

Best regards,
Eduardo Passos

Posted by: Enquiries - 11-30-2022, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Videos are great but there are so many options whan it comes to apps and options that I do not need. They were a great help in setting up my NAS and be able to see it from my devices.
What are the best apps and or simplest method to use my NAS to Store my Home Videos from xternal Drives, PC, Mac and Iphone.
Thanks You.

Lightbulb New NAS - 920+ or 923+ ??
Posted by: mdf0207 - 11-30-2022, 10:34 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi all

I am looking for a NAS as a home user and am having a debate on what NAS system to buy.
I am split between Synology and QNAP - though the former seems (from what I've read around the subject of NAS') to be a bit more secure and advanced in the sense of photo AI and photo app (an app which backs up to the NAS when out and about etc) ...
I thought about the 920+ as it has integrated graphics but as its 3 years old, I thought about QNAPP 464 model because it's newer and seems to have better hardware -- but because of the above and in my probably very amateurish understanding that QNAP isn't 'as good' or 'well-rounded' as Synology I explored the 923+ ... however because of its lacks of integrated onboard graphics , it has put me off - though the upgradability of it (and it being newer) draws me to it .. therefore I am in a debate, 920+ or 923+...
I see on some threads and NAS compares videos that Plex Server (Which I'm not sure I would actually use) may struggle with demanding transcoding; therefore 920+ is better. that said; if I'm not going to use a media server - why not get the 923+ .... this is where I get more stuck .. I read another post which largely says providing your not going to stream video from the NAS to say a mobile while out and about , the 923+ would be find to 'stream' video at home?

Another thing I'm not clear about; would the 923+ struggle with tasks like indexing and AI / facial recognition of photos or would be better?
does the 923+ having expandable ECC memory, the potential for higher LAN speeds and also SSD drive outweigh the dual-core AMD without integrated graphics ... I seem to think surely Synology wouldn't have a NAS that has such a chip set that would struggle / not perform with software that the very system is highly associated with, would they ?
Primarily I want a machine that is a backup of photos/videos etc and will sync my photos when out.

I have looked at hard drives; was thinking 4TB: Seagate ST4000NE001 IronwolfPro or Synology HAT5300-4T ...
Are Seagate brand and model a good choice, or would I notice much better improvement with Synology brand of HDD?

I have info overload ... any help would be gratefully received....

MARKS Google Photo backup deleted destination files if source files were removed

I noticed the photos backed up in the destination folders were removed once they were removed from the source folder. Is there a way to keep the destination files?

  Synology Diskstation DS3622xs+ NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-29-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello there,
We as a small video production company want to upgrade our existing 10GbE Network with a centralized NAS to serve as a footage server for our running projects. Up to 10 workstations should flawlessly be able to edit/copy/paste our 4k ProRes 422 HQ footage. A desktop solution like the DS3622xs+ NAS would be ideal. Upgraded with with 2x16GB RAM and a 2x25GbE extension card and 2,5" SSD cache (due to missing M.2 slot).
Because of budget, we consider HDDs for now and upgrade to SSD later (or not?). Would this configuration be sufficient enough for our needs? Does SSD cache make a huge difference for video editing, or even outbrake us?
Thanks in regard,
Martin Konrad

  Which NAS to buy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 11-28-2022, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I would like to install a home NAS system for several reasons: RAID, cloud file access, Photo management (like Google Photos), video surveillance recording and finally video and streaming services. This will be for home use but will need more power than the average home use NAS. Thanks so much.
