I have a QNAP TVS-671, upgraded to 16GB and the CPU to i7-4790s with 6 x 4tb WD RED's . I use it for PLEX currently but i now want to run a couple of VM's so i can run my Trading algos. I tried creating a VM with250gb disk, 4GB ram and 2 cores and running CTrader but found it all abit sluggish even though i never saw it saw it using more than 45% of the memory and CPU' allocated so not sure why. I am thinking of now upgrading maybe going to a 4bay but with larger 8tb or 10tb drives,..... any suggestions on an upgrade path ?,.. i am unsure how old the i7 ia m suing is considered or what performance i would see with the newer cpus ?. I dont really want to be paying over £1000 either but maybe something with M.2's would help ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Firstly, thank you so much for the content you propvide, as someone who uses Ple on my home PC to devices around my house I have found so much useful information.

I am hoping to get a recommended set up for a NAS system which can transcode 4k easily and store 10-20tb of storage fro now. I probably don't even have 1tb of content but am looking to of coruse increase this as I am hopign top reduce subscription services.

The interface with Plex is my priority along with ease of use as II am tech curious but not super savvy!

After viewing tons of your videos, I still have not come across a quite simple aspect anyone could expect from a decent NAS: what about finding and removing duplicated files on the NAS?

Does QNAP have a way to find (and remove) duplicate files?

I have been working for years with enterprise level NAS (NetApp) and TB of data across sites, but I have absolutely no clue about these general public brands.

I have been looking for a while for a storage solution, and i would really beneficiate for an expert POV.
I work in VFX for the movie industry, I deal with a lot of data, in the form of images sequences. So small file (20-100 MB) but a lot (A LOT) of them
I have a pc atm (with thunderbolt 4 ports)to which i attach raid SSDs to work directly from them (i cache the files on an internal m.2 ssd).

What (Ideally) i need is a solution with:
-redundant storage
-directly attached to my workstation (i live in a rent house in the UK, i can't set up a switch or a big infrastructure) in a very fast way (10gb or thunderbolt 4)
-the ability to access my data in a user-friendly way all around the world (i travel a lot and i don't really want to carry a backup every time with me)
-and have some side services (nice to have not foundamental) Plex, torrent downloader.

Hi there,

I'm looking to set up a local drive / drives to store and access point cloud data (laser scans). I will need to work on / with the files (using Autodesk Recap Pro) and I'd like to be able to make the storage solution network accessible for people to view (not to work on). I'm not sure if I should be looking at RAID5/6 or just an external SSD that I set up a nightly mirror on.

Any help or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I wanted a nas, to make it easier for my partner to save the files and have them available on two PCs. Also take the opportunity to test and play with virtual machines.

First of all, Thanks for the endless effort.

I have watched many of your videos.. but I still can't decide which NAS will serve my case ( I narrowed It down to F2-423 & Ts 262) but the problem is that they are above my budget.

However, my use case is only watching movies on my TV and moving files (12GB average) from my MacBook. I'm currently hooking my 20TB Harddrive to my Nvidia Shield to watch movies directly and use the built-in SMB to stream to my iPad or other TV.
so the question is.. which NAS is better for my usage ? especially if I want to use drive Max Speed (280+MB) in reading and writing ?

I have a small business, just me with a small number of sub-contractors who undertake report writing for me. I currently have a 365 subscription with a 1tb One-Drive which I use to storage reports some survey data. I use HD and 4k video recorders and this data is stored on a 4tb backup plus-hub; however, this is not currently backed up so I need to get some additional storage and use the 4tb backup plus-hub as the backup which i would store at a relatives house.
It would be handy if I could provide access to the sub-contractors for accessing files.
In 2021/22 I stored about 2tb of data.
I was looking at potentially getting a Synology DS923+ 16tb (4x4tb). I think this would be sufficient for my use (I expect I will be using video cameras more often and they are taking up more storage). I am potentially looking at setting it up as a RAID 5.

Hello, I would like to buy M.2 NVMe disks.
In compatibility list for my DS420+ is Samsung 970 PRO or IronWolf 510. These models are from previous series and have their succesors.

My question is: Should I follow compatibility list or can I use new models.

And what about WD (for example WD Black)?
