  Quick Question on Synology NVR1218
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-05-2023, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Sorry to bother you.
Just one quick question:

Is it possible that the Synologyh NVR1218 storage speed be limited to only 50-60MB/s ? Maybe by the main board or CPU ?

Even with WD Red SSD. No command or service runs faster than ~60MB/s.
Samba, FTP, local RSYNC, lcoal cp command, wget, etc.

Can any Synology be that slow ?!

Thanks.

  NAS for Music Streaming
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-04-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Regarding music streaming (one of my primary use cases) I want to use a NAS for storing and streaming FLAC, WAV and MP3 files. I have a Network hi-fi receiver (Marantz NR1200) but have been underwhelmed by the HEOS streaming system used by Marantz - I find it clunky and error-prone. If I introduce a NAS into my home network (I am looking at Synology or QNAP) can the control of music selection, playback, playlist management, etc. move to the NAS software (e.g. PLEX?) or would the Marantz still be the primary controller of those activities? You may surmise that I would like the Marantz to be used as a multi-room amplifier only and cut HEOS from my life!

Buying NAS and using with Fedora
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-04-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello

I'm planning to buy a NAS, just waiting a bit for potentially better price of DS223 or taking maybe DS220+, important for me is that it has BTRFS for snapshots.

I have 2 questions.

1. I wish to keep the device in the same room as I sleep and I wish it to be quiet as possible. I don't need a lot of space, at the moment I have less than 1TB on my internal drive taken. I'm considering buying 2x1TB SSD, because higher capacities of SSD's are too expensive for that idea. Alternatively, I'll go with 4TB Ironwolfs. How loud it is when the hard-drives run, or do they spin-off in case of being not used at night, and only spin-on in case of actual drive access or also randomly?

2. I plan to from Windows to Fedora. On YouTube there is almost nothing useful about Fedora related Synology NAS videos. I wonder if you could make a video about using Synology NAS with linux, if Fedora even better. I wonder about how network shares and Synology Drive works there.

Thanks,
Denis

  Initial NAS for video editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-04-2023, 03:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I found you when looking at the Asustor Flashstor 6 FS6706T - 6 Bay All-SSD NAS Storage. I was looking for a NAS that uses SSD, but am happy to hear your thoughts on SSD NAS vs SATA. I am happy to access via usb or Ethernet. My wife and I work from our RV, so small is important. My primary use case is editing up to 4K video and secondary to use as backup for two laptops.
Thanks for any guidance and recommendations you may have.
I appreciated your insights in your YouTube videos.
Best Regards.

DS 1522+ vs. DS923+ for Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-04-2023, 12:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys, really been enjoying your videos comparing different models of NAS. I saw the video comparing the DS1522+ vs. DS920+ and the 923+ plex review videos and want to make sure that I buy the correct one for my needs. I only need it for Plex Media Server to be able to share remote files between multiple other homes as well as locally on my own network. The biggest takeaway from the videos was that the 920+ was able to process the 4K files better. At this time I do not have anything 4K but with the purchase expected to be a 5-10yr investment who knows where we will be with standard video quality in the future. It is not my biggest priority at this time but a good thing to keep in mind down the road. My greatest concern right now is making sure that if multiple streams are being done over remote access Plex users it won't drop the play rate for them. Any help with choosing the best Synology model for my situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  NAS for photography
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-03-2023, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want to build NAS for photography, with outdoor access/upload., 2-3 separate users, good android/iphone app, low power. Subject recognition is a big plus. I'm deciding whether it is market brands (QNAP,Synology,Terramaster,ASUSTor...), using my old laptop, or buying a non-brand Celeron NAS machine.

I'm willing to try non-brand NAS, but I don't know whether 3rd party photo management/mobile app is good enough. Is there any 3rd party photo management with subject recognition, multiple users support, good mobile app?

Could you please do comprehensive reviews about 1) 3rd party Photo management software on NAS 2) Mobile Photo apps from 3rd party 3) The most recent version of mobile photo apps from brands?

I've heard that QNAP recently removed mobile backup from their recent version of QuMagie mobile, and Synology seems not interested in bringing back the subject recognition. These are really show-stoppers for me. So I'm also looking for 3rd party solutions/non-brand NAS.

  NAS Upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-01-2023, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Robbie and Eddie,
thank you so much for offering this service, I really appreciate that.
Concerning my NAS dilemma, my situation looks like this, right now I own a WD MyCloud Ultra Ex2 (2-bay NAS), with 4TB of HDD storage. I used it mainly as a Plex Multimedia station and Apple Time Machine but since I am sick of paying iCloud Storage for all of my photos and mobile device backups, I consider switching to a upgraded NAS since the WD MyCloud speed is just around 30mb/s which isn't that fast because Backups of my iPad are around 100GB. I heard about the Synology DS220+ and saw your YouTube video but I wanted to ask whether this NAS should bring up better upload speeds via LAN when backing up all of my devices, whether there is an option to directly backup iPhone and iPad without the need of an iMac in between and whether this device would handle plex and fit my needs, maybe you would recommend another device, Thank You very much in advance Smile

  Budget NAS for media
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-01-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I want to store and play back my media collection which currently uses about 6TB for my DVD/BD collection. I don't anticipate adding a lot more to it in the future. I think the PLEX server will work for me and it is unlikely that more than 2 users will ever be trying to play media at the same time.
