The whole point of this inquiry is to narrow down the models. I would like to use the NAS for back up and like the idea of 2.5 GbE but will need to fill the bandwidth – HDD are slow so how many bays will I need? When do SSD help? It is for a small business, so I expect 40-60 TB nominal enough. The data must be secure. But which RAID? How much of the nominal capacity is lost in the RAID? HDD do not work well without space free - threshold 80-90% maximum. Nominal capacity is therefore reduced by RAID overheads and HDD reserve. Sweet point for HDD is 10 GB. Drives should be quiet. Does this mean 6 bay is best? Which CPU?

Hi, I have a laptop collection of html and pdf files dynamically linked by a menu system--really a system of html bookmarks. I require remote access for only myself, but desire to use my files in the same manner remotely as I do locally on iphones, ipad, and other computers. I have about 30 gigs of files presently but I expect it will grow. I do not need a website, and this is only for my personal, exclusive, noncommercial use. I used to employ Opera Unite and then Tonido until those services were discontinued. I want a NAS based personal cloud to accomplish all of this. Help! Thanks, Phil

Just looking for info on what you would suggest for the Synology model you would suggest for me to use as my first NAS device. Lots of photos, videos, movies, and lots of documents to back up and access via iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air when travelling internationally. Desktop at home is an iMac 24-inch M1 chip 2021 model

Hello!
I just discovered your channel and website and you guys are just awesome, so much information and guides.
I want to set up my first NAS system, and as you already know, the number of options and the similarities between a few of them makes this a challenge. My needs are:
- backup system for personal photos, documents and etc, that I can rely on (some failure protection and redundancy). Having online remote access to it from multiple devices would be a big plus.
- running docker containers for work and also for my own personal learning. I know this is very generic, but here I was hoping for at least 8GB memory (ideally 16GB)
- running a Plex server where ideally the NAS would transcode everything (but I could live without this if necessary)
I'm contacting you because, in every video comparison I see, the "ideal" solutions are missing at least one of those features, and maybe you can point me in the direction of a solution that checks ALL of the boxes.
Regards
Bruno

Hi there, I have a DS3617xs and I'm upgrading to the E10M20-T1 so that I have a 10Gbe port and 2 x NVMe slots, for which I installed 2 x Samsung 970 Pros that I already own.
Do you know if there are any drive compatibility issues with these Samsung 970 Pros? Synology only lists their drives as being compatible with this expansion card, but I don't like being limited to just a single brand of SSD which may or may not be in stock when I need it.
Thank you for your help.

| Clearification on Synology Cache setup |

I just got a Synology drive DS1522+ and I am currently going through your You Tube videos on setup process. The articular you have posted on your nascompares.com site about cache setup is making me rethink my approach on cache setup but I need some clarification first.
I thought the cache work from the "Pool" which was described as a house and not a "Volume" which was described as a room. I wanted the extra memory available from any volume I worked from, thus a pool. From your instructions it sounds like this is not possible. Am I understanding this correctly? If this is the case what is the best method to decide which volume to add cache to.?
Thanks in advance for the video and clarification on this matter.

I am new to NAS. This will be my first. I am trying to decide to purchase AS6704T Gen2 or QNAP TS-464. I want to save drone clips to edit and camcorder files to edit. I dont do complicated, just basic editing, maybe color grading and save some 4k UHD movies to play on the TV.
The OS on the Asustor looks good but so does OS for QNAP.
I just ordered 2 WD 12T Red Plus drives because they are supposedly quite quiet and on sale.
Which would you suggest to use?
I just saw your YouTube on the Nimbustor AS5404T. This sounds real good also. When will it be available for purchase?
Suggestions?

Hey. I own a Qnap TS-873A. Have installed a GT 1030 - Gigabyte. I'm trying to understand why Plex doesn't use it when it has to transcode movies. Have all the drivers in place but the card is null, even if stream from my iphone a 4K movie via mobile network. Movie is playing ok, but the CPU is over 92% all the time. Can you give me any advice or configuration hint ?
Thanks in advance

Hi, I watched some of your videos on YouTube, and thought you would be the man to get some advice from.
I am a freelance motion designer (2D & 3D animation). I have a 2 computer setup (pc tower and MacBook) and I currently use Google drive to share files between machines. However this is becoming more and more unreliable as I keep getting disconnected from time to time and end up having to upload and sync everything again. So I'm looking to get a Synology Nas that can hold between 8-12tb and is as fast as possible. I'm used to working with local ssds so the closest I can get to that experience is what I'm looking for. I mainly work with huge ext image sequences and also large texture files (TIF, png, jpeg) occasionally 4k .mov but mainly I'm working with texture files in Cinema 4d and then large image sequences in After Effects.
So Im basically looking for advice on what to get.
Let me know if you need any more info on my setup and needs.
Thanks

Hi All,
Great Vids on YT guys & always watch them! ?
Couldn't seem to find much on the forum so here goes....
Migrated from from a TP-431P which has worked well for years but when the local dealer listed the new LS-462 for less than half price it was too good to be true but was so ... boom!!
We have migrated our HD's between them & have B/U, zeroed vol. & restored our data so able to use snapshots etc.
At the same time we upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 16GB! ?
Now we are considering adding NVMe cache and/or Qtier & a 5/10 Gbe PCIe NIC?
Questions are:-
1. What size Cache is appropriate for our NAS size & usage?
2. Should we use Qtier & again if so what size?
3. Can/should we mix both the above? Is there additional benefit instead of having one or the other?
4. What NIC would be suitable? A 5 or 10 Gbe? Both can can be used in our new DMS-106XT 2.5Gbe/10Gbe switch!
Look forward to any & all ideas, suggestions & solutions to optimize our shiny new NAS! ?
Cheers,
Tas
