  Synology NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-28-2023, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I have a Synology 918+ and it's dead... I have all information in there 4 RED WD.
I use NAS for backup, PLEX SERVER (most), docker, Nzb, sonar, radarr, etc
I want advice: to recovery all data can I buy the new 923+ or 1522+ and simply put the disks in new one? I used plex server and over my LG OLED native plex app for streaming most 1080p movies and series?
I read your guides and I can't decide if the AMD of 923+ or 1522+ is good for my use (plex server most and nzb) , if so between 923+ or 1522+ is best?
If you have another advice for a Synology NAS for my use tell me please.
Tks

Regards

  Getting the right NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-28-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need to figure out a NAS solution for a small non-profit. About 3 people using the NAS. 2 Primary PCs that need backup storage and shared network drive. It seems the top 3 for me all have something concerning. Synology with the recent issue of the WD warning and more picky hardware it seems. And costs more. QNAP seems to be the more well rounded solution but I need to know if their OS/Software is easy enough to use(vs Synology) or for a tech(like me) to explain it. Or will it be easy enough to configure a network drive and perhaps automatic backups from the PCs? Maybe a small Web/DB server? Is the TS-464 OK with only 8GB?(was hoping for 16/32) I also thought about Terramaster with the seemingly better hardware but lousy OS/Software. I could install TrueNAS but would also like to know if it has the ability to add Web/DB server. Is it possible with any to do raid 0 and have single disk for backup? Thanks! /J.B.

  Qnap Ts- 262 vs Ts-264
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-27-2023, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Love your videos, even if i only understand about 0.5% of them!
Re the long review of Ts-264, the link to Amazon goes to TS-253D-4G costing £480, not Ts-264.
However, visiting Amazon via Google, it would appear that they are selling Ts-264-8g for £419- 8% ie £386.
Likewise, Amazon appear to be selling Ts-262-4g for £399-3% ie £389.

Am I missing something here?!

  DSM7.2

As a home user I see little advantage to upgrading to DSM 7.2 at this time. Will I lose out by not upgrading

  YOUTUBE - ASUSTOR NAS SET-UP GUIDE #8
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-27-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have recently bought an Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 AS6704T 4 Bay NAS and I have been watching your YouTube video guides to setting it up. I want to have remote access to my NAS so need to connect it to the internet so I was particularly interested in #8 in the series. However, when I tried to view it, I got the message that the video was no longer available, which is very disappointing. Is there a reason that this particular video is not available and is there any way I can view it or do you have another video on the same subject? Your YouTube guides are extremely useful as, although I am not a novice, I still have a lot to learn. Thanks in advance for your help. Chris.

  NAS for video editing (Resolve)
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-27-2023, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Robbi, Eddy, I was looking at a 1821 10g for multi stream 4k editing/home storage as per your advice. Would SHR2 work ok? But also considering QNAP TB nas (is Synology going to restrict drive selection etc problems?) Would there be any significant advantage (speed, etc) using TB? eg, TVS-872XT or if the TVS-hX74T4 is released? Where do I find your affiliate links for Amazon purchase, please? Or do you have a 1821 or TVS-872/672Xt lying around that you would sell? Many thanks for all your informative and entertaining videos. Best, Chris

WD Ultrastar 16TB compatibility with QNAP TS-253A
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-27-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Greeting. I want to upgrade my current HDD in TS-253A from WD Red 2TB x 2 to WD UltraStar 16TB x 2 running in Raid 1. However this drive is not in the QNAP compatibility list, but the same drive seems to be compatible with other 2-bay QNAP NAS. Do you think I should still go ahead or choose a drive that shows in the Compatibility List to prevent potential issues?

  NAS Diskstation
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-26-2023, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

This is all new to me, but I'm looking for a storage solution for my work & personal files, photos, music and videos. I plan on sharing media files with family members outside of my home and give them space to save their own photos. From the reviews I've read, Synology seems to have consistently been a reliable solution. I've been looking at the 4 bay DS923+ (newegg.ca sale $879.99) or 5 bay DS1522+ (sale $999.00 CAD) diskstations, but when I started to read about Plex and transcoding I got overwhelmed. I already purchased four 6TB WD Red hard drives but I think they are 5400 and not 7200 based on advice from a computer store sales rep. Should I upgrade and invest in better hard drives? Are the two disktations I've been looking at a good solution for what I'm trying to do and is the 5 bay any better for media? Would I be better off getting a 4 bay and adding a second 2 bay diskstation to manage video content alone?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Install Plex plug-in via SSH from Windows
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-26-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, can you make a step by step video guide on how to SSH into a NAS and copy/transfer a plugin/bundle file to the plex  plugins folder on a nas? I have a plugin called AUDNexus and it will scrape audible for meta data for a audio book files in a  plex music library. Then use Chronicle audio book player to access the audio book plex library. Let me know if plex will not allow you to make such a video. I think it would be a great video topic. Or, if you know of a resource, can you point me in the right direction on how to accomplish this?

Thanks for your time in advance

UPDATE June 2023

Thanks! I was able to SSH into the nas, and found the directory for the PLEX app and plugins folder was on the NAS. I then used a SFTP client to copy the audnexus.bundle folder into the plex plugins folder and I was able to create a plex music library and select and use the audnexus agent plugin that scrapes Audible meta data for my audio book library to bring in meta data for audio books. Super happy it works! I was just guessing and hoping it worked and it did. Thank you for the quick reply. A video on how to do this would help so many people.

Regards,
Andrew

Hardware restrictions PCI lanes NVMe on TS 464
Posted by: Enquiries - 06-26-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there Ed,

In your newer video about the TS-464 NAS at 495 seconds you mention the hardware restrictions of the PCI lane, and that one could only get 1000mbit/s or 2000mbit/s to NVMe card:
https://youtu.be/9x_dem6_-1A?t=495

I have these NVMe cards that I solely want to use for cache:

Western Digital WD Black SN850 NVMe SSD 2 Terabyte

On the box it says: "Up to 7000 MB/s Read".

Would the TS-464 still be a worthwhile investment? What is next in range that could be strong and faster than the TS-464?

I would go Synology but our local suppliers in South Africa seems to be more familiar with QNAP.

kind regards,
Eugene
