  Release Candidate and SSD
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-25-2023, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys!

Just wanted to let you know that the RC for 7.2 is now out!

Also, a quick question, now that M.2 NVMe SSD's can be used for storage pools, can we use any M.2 NVMe SSD? Or does it have to be a Synology branded one? I've had a look online and its not really apparent.

Thanks!

  moving M.2 cache
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-25-2023, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello-Please pardon my mundane Q here. I headed to the Forum, but my password failed, and even after resetting said password, the system said my temp password (that you emailed to me) was invalid.

I am upgrading my NAS from a Synology 918+ to a 1522+. The 918+ has a cache configured with (Synology M.2 2280 NVMe SSD SNV3400 400GB) x 2. I suspect this is overkill for my use-case and I would like to move one of the modules to the new drive so each NAS has a 400 GB cache.

Is this advisable? Could this be harmful to existing data? I would be grateful if you could point me towards more information.

Thank You!
stephen

Posted by: Enquiries - 04-24-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am trying to by a NAS that can backup / image hard drives in my office. Incrementally would be great if possible. In case of hard drive failure or ransomware.
Synology seems to be able to do it with "active backup" but the descriptions of what it does are not clear. Would Asustor have something that would work? From your reviews, it is better hardware for the money. I am not looking for transcoding or plex. I used to have a Windows home server and it worked fine, for XP computers....
thank you

Best NAS for 4k photo and video + storage personal file and editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-24-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am looking for a NAS system for personal storage of documents photo and video, but also to view and edit these. The system shall be min. 16 TB capacity, for this I am looking for 32 TB considering raid 1 configuration. The system shall store all my memories and traveling stories.

The software shall be friendly, useful for working on local PC or able to view via smart tv.

Solution for attached CCTV surveillance cameras are wise to have.

Can you give a feedback here.
Thank you for your help

Kind regards Marian

Bending the DS1823xs+ to my will.
Posted by: robothunter - 04-24-2023, 01:46 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I got myself a DS1823xs+ for better or worse, I'm not sure yet. I feel like I'm in a battle with Synology just for the right to use this thing how I want. I was able to migrate my storage pool from my plus series in order to get SHR on this thing. My wife loves red but I find green to be more calming so I used the syno hdd script to turn my unverified WD Red Pro 20TB drives from red to green. I had two 1TB IronWolf 525 drives installed and I was surprised to see the option available to set them up as a storage pool instead of just caching. I created a RAID0 just to test it out and they are working great. Unfortunately I've only got 1.8TB's of usable space and my speed is slightly limited.

My question is:
If I buy two 1TB SATA SSD's could I create a storage pool (RAID0 or RAID5) combining the two NVMe drives and the two SATA SSD's?

  OWC Thunderbay 4 vs 8
Posted by: majouz - 04-23-2023, 01:43 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

On their website they claim Tunderbay 8 delivers Pro-grade transfer speeds: up to 2,586MB/s real-world tested speed with Thunderbolt 3 port. Thunderbay 4 delivers up to 1527MB/s performance. I tried to ask them directly but the only answer I got was that 8 bays are faster than 4 bays. Is this this only explanation?

I am looking to decide on one or the other soon. My storage needs can be satisfied with Thunderbay 4 but if Thunderbay 8 delivers that much faster performance, I don't mind shelling the extra $$$.

Would appreciate any guidance.

QNAP QHora 322 setup help needed
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-23-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello. Based on the positive review of the QHora-322 on your YouTube channel I purchased the unit and have found the setup that it’s delivered to be what I can only describe as ready for an Enterprise install.
Each port appears to have its own ip address table and you can’t even ping a pc that’s connected to a different port.
I need some help to dumb the current setup down to what one would expect from a typical domestic router as I’ve not been able to get any guidance from the manual or found any solution online.
WAN/internet access is working no problems, I’d like to have it setup with one DHCP table for all LAN ports, and for all ports to be able to see each other.
It would be nice to be able to change the routers IP address and select the IP range for the DHCP table too.
If you have a guide or can point me to a knowledge base article (I’ve been looking!) I’d be extremely grateful and happy to donate to NASCompares for the assistance.
Thanks in advance.
Aaron.

  ECC RAM Question
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-23-2023, 05:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I recently required an RS1821+ and noticed that you do not have any ECC RAM compatibility suggestions for this, which I assume means there is nothing known at this time. However, I noticed that there are other models that seem to use the same RAM identifier (RAMEC2133DDR4-16G) which points to this URL (https://a.co/d/iBUeyS4) for Crucial modules. Do you have any insight to know if this is compatible with the RS1821+? I'm hoping to get 4 x 16 Gb modules to max out this unit without breaking the bank with the ones from Synology.

On an unrelated note:
By the way, I have a DS1621xs+ that I have successfully been using the v-Color modules with 2 x 16 Gb modules. I noticed that this page suggests that v-Color is an option but the link goes to Kingston. I'm not sure if Kingston is compatible or if it's the wrong URL. It doesn't matter to me but I want to point it out.

Thanks in advance!

  10 GBe, M.2 SSD Explained
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-22-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I am looking into a Synology DS923+ for 3 main reasons:
1. setup family photo and video storage
2. Personal video file storage for wedding video business. I would like to be able to edit videos from files stored on NAS.
3. Backup files through RAID storage

I like Synology for their photo management software. And the 4-bay unit should fit my current and future needs. Upon further research, I saw advice about upgrading to 10GbE for speed and M.2 SSDs for caching. Would you recommend these upgrades for my purposes?
