How to use Handbrake for transcoding
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-28-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there,
I was wondering if you could do a video on transcoding with handbrake on a Synology NAS? I'm currently running into a slight issue with my NAS. I have a ton of BluRays that I copied as mkv files to my NAS with MakeMKV. But those files turn out to be between 30-50 GB per file.

When opening handbrake in a docker container, I'm wondering what are the best settings to automatically transcode those video files, so that I can still play them with Plex on an Intel system like the DS423+. (some codecs are not supported) while saving a lot of data.

No worries, I have a solar array, so the electricity used is kind of for free. Because it takes quite some power to let the NAS transcode a video file.

Looking forward to your feedback and possibly a video on YouTube, where the best options are explained in terms of saving file size, while maintaining high quality files that play easily from the NAS.

  NVR QNAP or Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-28-2023, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Well, I'm sure you're sick of hearing from me by now. I've been watching more of your videos. I currently have a Synology DS918+ populated with 4 WD Red Pro 4 TB Drives. This is currently sufficient fore my current needs but will upgrade the drives in another year or 2.

I am looking at adding a NVR for surveillance only. I will be using a minimum of 4 4k cameras recording 24x7 plus recording from my doorbell cam. I would like to keep a minimum of 30 days of video on the NVR. I have to buy a new NAS anyway so I've thought of:

1. Using my 918+ and install WD Purple Pro's and buy a different NAS to use as an actual NAS and the 918+ for surveillance.

2. Buy the Synology DVA3221 for Surveillance only.

3. Buy a different brand altogether and either use it as NAS or DVR.

Budget is not important. If you would please recommend your top 3 recommendations and which use and briefly why. If other than Q or Syn, the preferred HD brand.

Thanks,

Ryan

  Plex Server Backup
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-27-2023, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello - My Terramaster F5-221 (TOS 4.2.40) has just "for no reason" deleted its plex media server database (meta data, artwork, credit detection all lost). I say for no reason because yesterday it was fine and I came back today and its all empty (no libraries or anything). The NAS does do a scheduled power down for a few hours overnight, but this has been fine for months.

In order to over come this issue going forward. I think i need to backup the \Volume #1\user\plex\ folder 1) please can you confirm i need the whole folder structure form here doen 2) to restore the server, is it as simple as stop service and paste over the top of this folder 3) im struggling to use an automated backup tool to get to that folder as im not able to access this far down the user folder structure - any ideas?

Thanks for any and all advice.

  Help with first basic setup
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-27-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Team!

I am a basic home user who used a WD my Cloud (6 TB) to back up my pictures. However, the device died and now I am forced to change my device.

I have been recommended the Synology 723 (by the data recovery shop that is retrieving my data). but feel it could be a bit overkill just to back up my pictures and media (i don't even use Plex).

from the Nas Compares videos I feel Synology may be a good way to go because of the software and ease of use.

I also think a 2 bay would be suitable and I would set it up for mirroring for a backup?

I would be grateful if I could get advice on what would be a good setup as well as what hard drives I should use.

The key is something that will be still suitable in a few years. I don't want something that will be outdated next year.

I would be grateful for your help. thank you

Adam

  Hit by Lightning (!)
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-26-2023, 07:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Rob -

Bought a QNAP HS-453DX-8G on your recommendation three years ago, and love it. Problem is, the power pole right outside our facility was hit by lightning, and the “surge” came in through the ground connection, which fried everything connected via copper (100bTX or 1000bT) including the QNAP. That’s one of the challenges of living in the “lightning capital of the world” (Florida). Nonetheless, I’ve replaced the MBs on several PCs and the HDDs were completely unaffected — the PCs booted right up, afterwards.
Now my question: I’m going to buy another QNAP HS-453DX-8G, and I wonder, should I just transfer the SSDs into the brand new unit, then turn it on? Or should I perform any intermediate step(s)? I can virtually guarantee that the old unit was not writing, or even being accessed, when the lightning hit. Thanks, keep up the GREAT work!

in your opinion what is the best 1U 4bay NAS available today. Intended use is 90% file storage (remote & local access), occasional VM and Plex uses.

Thanks so much!

NAS and Disk layout Selection help
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-26-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking to replace current SAN infrastructure (based on Dell R720xD which uses Fusion-io 3.4TB PCIe Gen 2x8 card and 4 SSDs, and 5 x 1TB SATA HDD )

Used to as ISCSI target for Microsoft Hyper-V cluster running 15 VMs of various workloads, mostly no much.
CIFS Storage for all users and other data
Raid 5 ( 1TB disks) for backups of all the above

Nodes and R720 have dual 10GBe with iWarp RDMA over Chelsio NICs

Main drivers are:
better IOPS (thinking M2 NVME), but equally important is to lower the power usage!
Kit is old now, 12 years

Prefer buying a solution like QNAP, but if only way to make affordable is to do DIY, then will

Apart from which hw to purchase, i could do with recommendations on disk layouts to support the two distinct workloads types. i.e. number of each disk type and RAID levels

Many thanks

NAS; adding drive to storage pool
Posted by: Enquiries - 04-26-2023, 09:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Have a DS1621+ with 2 drives (14tb available memory total) and have added a 3rd drive (another 8tb drive) but am not finding any way to add this drive to the current pool. Running a PLEX server with 1 pool/1 volume in raid 0, but the only options that the storage manager are giving me are to 1./ Assign a hot spare, or 2./ create a storage pool. What do I need to do to be able to add more drives?
