  TS-462 white connectors on board
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-11-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi there!

Great review on the TS-462! (https://nascompares.com/2023/03/06/qnap-ts-462-nas-review/#QNAP_TS-462_NAS_Review_-_Internal_Hardware)

I just got myself a TS-462 and I want to add an SSD to it just for the OS and config.

What I've seen on the board are 2 white connectors, one near the SSD and a smaller one near the DDR4 slots. Therse connectors don't seem to be mentioned in the Qnap documentation (or anywhere on the Internet for that matter).

Do you know if they're fan power connectors for active SSD heatsinks (although it does not look like one that you might have on a regular PC motherboard), Serial or anything else?

Thanks in advance!

Currently I have a 216+. I have been waiting to upgrade for th 923 but it isn't great for video at the moment (plex, etc). Prime day has 1522+ for 549 us and the 923 for 480. Are these a decent upgrade? Or is it worth waiting or to spend a little more? Or should I consider qnap? I use this for house backups, photo sharing and editing, video also, I want to use it for a few cameras and a doorbell. It has been a Google drive replacement.

Also would a additional small nuc pc or small nas be better to just run plex vs have it all in one box?

Migrating Synology NAS DS1819+ to DS1823XS+
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-11-2023, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have an existing DS1819+ using 6 x HAT5300 8TB and and 2 x Seagate IRONWOLF 8TB all in one volume running SHR-2.

My questions is can this be migrated directly to a DS1823xs+ knowing 2 of my disks are potentially not supported and also knowing SHR is not supported on the XS series.

The changing of disks I can deal with by upgrading them before migrating but what about RAID type, from what I am reading I can't migrate from SHR-2 to RAID6.

Hi,

Great youtube channel, well done!

I'm looking to invest in my first nas. Use cases are backup, video storage/retrieval, photo backup from iPhone.

Nas looks like a more economcal solution compared with Google Drive/iCloud etc.

I'm finding that I'm running out of space on these quickly mostly due to photos and video.

Any recommendations for a 2 bay nas for 500 knicker?

Thanks,

Josh.

  NAS set-up advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-11-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I'm looking for a robust NAS set-up for back-up of my photo's and back-ups of all the phones (Android and Iphone). I'm thinking about around 10TB, should be enough for the coming years.
Possiblity of extension in the future would be a pro, but not a requirement.

I would like to have it as energy efficient as possible and low noise.

I would like to use M.2 or SSD storage, but I did read some negative articles on power consumption and life time expectancy.

with respect of photo back-up, this should be in stead of cloud-storage, so it should be reliable and easily accessible from phones and laptop.

Thank you for your help.

Kind regards, Jurjen

  RAID & partitions
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-11-2023, 07:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

This question is about capabilities in Synology or maybe other providers allow this.

Is it possible to create this setup:
- DISK 1 (2TB)
- PARTITION 1.1 (1TB)
- PARTITION 1.2 (1TB)
- DISK 2 (2TB)
- PARTITION 2.1 (1TB)
- PARTITION 2.2 (1TB)

RAID 0 = 1.1 + 2.1 (2TB total) assumption - faster to read and write (striping), no redundancy
RAID 1 = 1.2 + 2.2 (1TB total) assumption - redundancy, but slower than RAID 0

I'm looking at buying DS220+ I care about speed for some and redundancy for other data. And the ability to have two types of RAID on partitions not disks would be perfect for my needs.

Does this make sense?

  Drobo Replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-10-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a full Drobo 5C. I have a PC with two thunderbolt 4 ports. Was hoping to get a Thunderbolt 4 drobo but just found out now that they have gone under. For me the most important thing about drobo is that I can hot swap out drives as my needs grow. My 5C is full. I have a box of hard drives from the past that I was hoping to toss into a 2nd Thunderbolt 4 drobo and grow it to being full just as I did my 5C. From your video it seems like there are no viable/afforable truly Thunderbolt 4 devices out there. Hoping to spend not much more than $600 or so on the enclosure, start with my current extra drives and grow it as I have my drobos over the year.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  New NAS - maybe QNap?
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-10-2023, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

What I currently have: TS-231P with 2x WD Red 6TB drives, so very much entry level. I do not want more storage (more disks).

My main use cases are:
1- Music Streaming (using Plex), the 231P works fine for that.
2- TV Shows and Movies (that I own) using Plex. It isn't powerful enough for the majority of use cases (not supported messages), and I'd like to stream to one person (I'm by myself) to a web browser over the network, or my TV app (Plex), or have the capacity on a tablet/phone. Always 1 stream.
3- Offload my torrent downloads to my NAS (currently possible)
4- (Very) Light use of Docker Containers (not currently possible with 231P)

I do not want to overpay just to have encoding or Docker containers, but really just want to have at least 1 stream and have Home Automation (Docker) running (not many containers running).

  Photo editing
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-10-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Rob,

I'm looking for a good Synology NAS. My main interest is in photo editing and file protection (backup). I'm mainly looking for a Synolgy 4 bays.
At the moment, I use Lightroom Classic to edit images. My Lr catalogues are on an iMac M1 and the photo files are on a Synology DS220j NAS (2-4GB HDD) connected to the iMac by an Ethernet cable. It's not very fast for image processing!
Which Synology NAS would best meet my editing and backup needs?
Is there a better way of connecting to the NAS than RJ-45, for working, while retaining the redundancy (RAID) that a NAS provides? I'm thinking of the USB-3 port... If so, how does that work?
Thanks for your work and your always good advice!
Have a nice day,
Michel
