  Synology DS923+ vs TerraMaster
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-26-2023, 07:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I ordered a Synology DS923+ based on a local company (Data Doctors) recommendation. I hired their technician to install it and get me “up and running” since I knew little about NAS. Technician arrives and attempts to download firmware update utilizing my MacBook Pro and we can’t get software to open on a Mac (“software not available in your country”)(what?). Tech says that he always has problems with Synology and Macs. Advises that I return the Synology (I did, to Amazon) and find a 2bay that work’s better on a Mac. I’m stuck with four 8TB of HDD but saw the TerraMaster and wondered if it “plays” better with a Mac than the Synology. Your suggestions? Oh, I’m not a Windows guy so please don’t go there. I had a hard enough time changing over once. A different technician? I already paid this guy $$$. I just need some help to get this video business going with some decent storage that I can hand off projects on. Help me, Oh-Be-Wan, you’re my only hope (so far).

Which NAS for a sole trading landscape photographer
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-26-2023, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, Please help!

I need some advice on which NAS system to get started with. Im overrun with external hard drives full of RAW files which I need to consolidate and create a better/faster editing workflow including Lightroom, Photoshop and occasional video editing. Its only myself that uses this at home but editing raw files and large panoramic images is a must! I've watched. may of your videos but i'm still confused.

I've looked at DS420+, DS923+, DS220j and QNAPs comparable systems! I use a 2017 Retina 5K 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5.

I recently bought an 8tb HDD and a 4tb SSD which are being used in enclosures but would like to integrate these into the NAS!

Thanks for your time, any help would be greatly appreciated
Kind regards
Tristian

  low end, entry-level, budget NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-26-2023, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

1. Hi! I love the videos and have been bingeing them for the past few weeks.
2. I would like some help deciding which NAS to buy.
3. Requirements: two users in home on three laptops and two phones, 4-8TB storage
3.1 file sharing for photos and documents
3.2 plex to play mostly mkv and avi on 1080p tv (I don't believe transcoding would be required for that)
3.3 torrenting directly to NAS would be awesome (I just discovered that functionality!)
3.4 iPhone photo sync to NAS instead of iCloud
4. I had my eyes set on the Synology DS220+ given the slew of top reviews last year but decided to wait for a refresh; now I'm wondering if an ARM CPU would do the job for my needs.
4.1 Currently considering Asustor Drivestor 2 or DS223
5. What do you recommend? Is the Drivestor 2 due for a refresh? I'm not sure the Synology premium is worth it for me since I don't think I'd take advantage of DSM--perhaps better to pay for more hardware and less software in the package? 1GB vs 2GB RAM? Thank you!

  NAS Choice
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-25-2023, 06:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I currently use a ASUSTOR AS7004T with 4 - 4Tb drivers in raid 5. The drives are full with family and friends data. The NAS used for Plex, Photos, and music. I am currently looking at the QNAP TVS-h874-i5-32G, ASUSTOR AS6706T, AS6508T. The QNAP appears to have better hardware. I am not brand loyal. The new NAS will be primary and the AS7004T will be the backup. Looking for NAS recommendation. Thanks,

Hi,
Is there a way to use a 2.5gb usb to ethernet adapter on the F2 221 as I can't seem to get it working?

  Qnap TVS-H874 v QVP-85B
Posted by: DaveInMilwaukee - 05-25-2023, 04:19 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I just saw that you guys posted a video comparing the TVS-h874X vs TVS-h1288X, and I'll be watching it soon.

The video that I would love to see you guys make is one comparing the TVS-h874 and the new QVP-85B.

I'm puzzled. I can't really tell the difference. Same box, same specs, but the QVP-85B is marketed towards surveillance.

As best as I can tell, the QVP-85B has less features (it doesn't have QTS, but runs QVR Pro) and costs more money (on B&H the QVP-85B is $2,199 and the TVS-H874 is $2,165).

I have the TVS-H874, and I can't find a single reason why I would pay extra money, or even want a lesser version of the same (you decide if it's the same) NAS.

In fact, my NAS (TVS-H874) may even be better for surveillance, as I can run Container Station (Wyze Bridge, Blue Iris, Frigate, etc). I'm not using QTS Hero, so I have 8 licenses as well. Maybe if the QVP-85B used QVR Elite and gave you 8 cameras, or included some of the subscription features I could understand.

This one is a job for NAS Compares.

NAS for media streaming + private cloud
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-25-2023, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I would appreciate the advice if you find time. My two main case uses are for media streaming to the TV plus private cloud for the family (trying to reduce both subscriptions to streaking services and cloud services).

Is it possible to set this up in one single NAS or do I need to do a dedicated one for each? I was looking at some NAS and they're already at CHF4-500 easy without the actual storage part so I understand pushing the budget up a bit. I figure also a 4 bay might be better for future proofing.

I am not very tech savvy so I would prefer something with an easy set up. I might use plex free for this usage.

  LUN vs File Share
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-25-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I am looking for advice on using LUNs or File Shares. I want to be able to map to the files from a Windows Laptops as well as iPADs within my home network. Less than 5 people will access the data.
I thought LUNS would be best as they can be mapped drives but I wonder if this is overkill and File Shares would be better.
I can't see anything on the WWW which answers my query and summarizes the advantages / disadvantages of each so would appreciate you advice please.
Thanks

  Best NAS for Plex server
Posted by: Enquiries - 05-24-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey There,

I have enjoyed your youtube videos and was wondering what would be the best NAS for a plex media server. I have a home theater that is setup for 4k video and dolby atmos 7.2.4 sound and woudl like a NAS that can handle those files.
