I'm looking for a NAS solution to replace Google photos and amazon photos.

This is just for photo storage backup, with the ability to check the photos on my phone.

  Synology vs OpenMediaVault
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-09-2025, 05:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I used OpenMediaVault in past on Raspberry Pi 4b with 4TB SSD drive but it’s not ideal to use with MAC. I want to use something like Synology NAS but it’s always seem to be out of my budget.

I would appreciate, if you give me your expert opinion on it.

Thank you.

  TS-251B HD Upgrade advice
Posted by: WTomP - 03-09-2025, 02:52 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

1-I need to Upgrade my storage from 3 to 4 tb HD drives, so is a change to Sata Ssd going to improve performance ?

I have already used a 2.5g ethernet card in the Pci slot and my whole house network is 2.5 gb switches with 10gb backbone between an the 251B is used solely to serve HD music using MinimServer. No other apps  are used.

Advice would be very welcome...WTomP

  Basic NAS Guide
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-08-2025, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am considering a Synology DS1522+ as my very first NAS and am looking for a simple/idiot's guide book to setting up a NAS before I make the purchase. Is there such a book anywhere?

I've looked at the NASCompares videos which explain HOW to setup but need to know pros and cons before making decisions e.g. deciding how to divide storage space, any pitfalls using iSCSI, can sizes of LUNs and iSCSI be changed without deleting the data etc.
Thanks

Mick

  Recommendations for Backup NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-07-2025, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

NAS for Backup

Need to backup Synology 1621xs+ to second nas,

1621xs+ running with 4 16TB hdd. May add 2 more hdd some point in the future but not soon.

Currenlty have 20TB data with 26TB free.

Prefer backup nas to be synology probably a plus (+) model . Debating if I need 4 bay or 5 bay. Looking at DS423+, 923+, 1522+, or 1621+.

I have 4 Western Digial Red HDDs i could put in them. 1-!4TB, 2-8TB, and 1-6TB i can use in the backup nas.

All my computers are Macs.

  UNAS-PRO buying options
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-07-2025, 12:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I live in Saudi Arabia, where can I buy the UNAS-PRO from/ Its all scalpers selling on ebay for almost double the retail price once you factor in shipping. Would really appreciate help on this as Ubiquiti just refer you to their distributors in the region and they don't have any. I am amazed that they have a NAS solution that no one can buy! I would be very grateful for help on this matter as having waited for months in the hope that it would become available in the market there doesn't seem to be any availability. Thank you for your time and help.

  Best config using nvme
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-07-2025, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi

I purchased the Terramaster F4-423 and was just curious about the fastest setup using nvmes as cache and maybe primary app drive? I looked high and low through your videos, but even though I understand using an nvme as cache will help some and not others, being new to this, I wanted to set it up to where I'd get the best performance out of the nas. for watching movies, sharing photos, playing music on devices, backing up phone and pc data, etc... I also bought 2 10tb wd black 7200 drives...and have two 4tb drives as well, and was going to use the TRaid to set them up.

Any advice or suggestions on how to set it up using an nvme drive as cache and the other however you suggest for performance, would be appreciated. I do have a 2gb network that will be upgraded to 10 eventually.

Thank you, Joe

P.S. love the helpful videos too. ??

Home NAS for storing (not serving) media, photos and more
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-06-2025, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi guys, first of all thanks for this and love the channel.

I'm looking for a NAS for my home network. I don't need the NAS to be able to run containers and other fancy stuff, as I will be using a mini PC to stream movies (from the NAS storage) or host a photo gallery app
Since my home network is primarily in the Unifi ecosystem (Dream Machine SE, two Wifi6 APs, switches), my first thought was the Unifi UNAS, but the 10Gbe feels like overkill to me as I plan to start with 3.5 HDDs and grow from there, and spinning disks will probably be a bottleneck anyway, plus the home network is currently 1Gb.
Now I saw the Lincstation S1 on crowdfunding and it sounds like an interesting alternative
Basically, I want something future-proof to store my files, but also media I want to stream from another machine, without breaking the bank by starting with a hard drive and gradually growing from there

  First NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-06-2025, 09:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, I'm looking to get my first NAS. Will be used as an easy to access data backup for me and my wife's home PCs and phones. My current plan is to get something like a 4 bay NAS, but only use two slots initially in a RAID1 config. Then use the couple of external hardrives which we are currently using as offsite backups for the most precious files by keeping them at the in-laws.

I also have some interest in using it as a Plex server and potentially hosting a minecraft server on it for me and a couple of mates. However, if these start to drive the cost too much, then they aren't hard requirements.

I have had a look and whilst I want it to be future proofed, I dont' want to spend money I don't need to. Would be interested to see what you recommend.

Have been looking at something like a Synology DS923+ (maybe a bit pricey for the hardware?) or the QNAP TS264 (I didn't like some of the comments I have seen about security issues).

Look forward to your response.
Tom
