TNAS F4-424 user problem |

Hello,
It seems like my new TerraMaster TNAS F4- 424 setup forgets the user table somewhere between 48 and 72 hours of operation. I followed the videos and they were a big help to set it up but they don't address this problem. If you know how to fix the issue, that is even better.
Thanks,
Brice

I have a DS923+ and want to add an SSD drive for use with VM's. Also, is it recommended that I mirror two drives for this purpose? I appreciate your response.

Family NAS Network |

I'm planning to set up a network of NAS devices across potentially two or three different locations for my family. The idea is that each site would serve as a backup for the main NAS and homelab.
The primary NAS will be used for running applications like Plex/Jellyfin, Immich, and other various services. The secondary locations would be dedicated to backup and potentially some small local services. All the NAS devices would be connected using Tailscale, and I'd like to have specified folders backed up automatically across them.
I'm comfortable building a DIY NAS if that turns out to be the better option, but I'm currently unsure about the specific hardware I should consider.
Could you provide some guidance on the best way to proceed with this plan?

UGREEN DXP2800 - Cannot Get Linux Installed |

Note that this is a cross-post from Reddit r/HomeNAS (I would link but am not allowed). The NAS Compares YouTube channel is what helped me make my decision (thank you!).
Hello all,
I recently purchased a new UGREEN DXP2800. This model has the onboard 32G EMMC storage, 2 NVME slots, and 2 SATA bays. Per the plethora of YT videos regarding installing Linux distros on these units, I have disabled the EMMC storage in BIOS and turned off watchdog. I populated one of the NVME slots with a 1TB Samsung 990 for the OS (way overkill) and the two SATA bays with 6TB WD Red drives. Currently running the 8G of RAM that the unit ships with (it only has a single RAM slot - a new 16G SO-DIMM is on the way).
But here's the kicker - I can't get a Linux installer to run. So far I've only tried TrueNAS Scale and Rocky Linux 9. In both cases, the unit posts and the boot loader of the installation media (USB key) appears. When I try and start the installer for TrueNAS it gets a few pages into loading the live / installer OS and then panics saying it cannot remount root. When I try and start the Rocky installer it is similar - live / installer OS gets a bit in and then halts with errors about not being able to find inst.stage2 / inst.repo.
I'm really scratching my head here as I can't even get a live OS going to begin the install. Videos I've watched and instructions I've read make this install sound like any other typical Linux install (with the exception of disabling the watchdog, which I've done). The only difference is that I've not seen people run through an install on the 2800 (the 2-bay unit) - they've all been on the 4-bay and higher end ones.
I've tried permutations of EMMC enabled and disabled and SATA drives installed and not. Tried different USB ports for the installation media.
Any ideas?

New NAS or just mac mini with a DAS |

Hi,
My first NAS was a DS211J followed by a DS214Play. At home we have al Iphones some ipads en a couple of Mac Computers/laptops.
I was wondering if my Mac mini (base M1 256gb/8gb) with a DAS would make more sence then a New NAS. The Mac Mini uses a little energie and i have 4TB of external ssd storage (one 2 tb and two 1 tb ssd's) I don't use my NAS anymore for Music and movie storage (spotify and streaming services) only Back-ups and file sharing.
Kind regards Jasper

Hi there. Thank you for your help back in December 2020, my Synology NAS drive is probably one of the best bits of kit I have ever bought!
I am looking at getting a second NAS drive to mirror the one at home (up/down) which I want located in my second, home as a back up but also being able to access and modify my files when there.
Is that possible with something like Tailscale?
Do you provide a paid consulting service that could assist me setting that up as its a little beyond my pay grade.
Thank you.
Quentin

Need help building the first NAS system |

Hi,
I am currently planning to build NAS system for my home use. This is for multi purpose use. The major element is that I want to use this as a home-lab for my cybersecurity lab. This will involve having multiple virtual machines that can built for experiments and torn down when needed. The other uses will involve using it as storage element for photos and videos (and movies) for my family. They should have access to these storage content via the internet.
The main requirement is that the home-lab part of things should be isolated from the storage part of things (i.e., the home-lab should be a sandbox). I am not looking to have any RAID 2 level backup and availability but I wouldn't say no to a RAID 1 setup.
This is my first time building a NAS and I didn't want to get a pre-built NAS so I can try to learn by building it.
Any help or suggestions building this NAS system will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Saran.

Migrating from Synology to Ugreen |

Hello and thanks for all the info you share about NAS!
My question:
- How to migrate from Synology to UGreen ?
1. I think that many of your followers are asking themselves the same question: how to migrate the data?
2. For me I have a DS218+ and was planning to get a DS925+ but maybe better move to a DXP2800 or 4800?
Is it possible to take one HD out of the DS218+ and put it into the UGreen, migrate all the data and then take the second HD and put it into the UGreen?
3. Another idea is of course to use the older Synology for backup of the UGreen: How do you backup the UGREEN? I haven’t seen that there is an equivalent to HyperBackup.
(Personally I’m using my very old DS213J to backup my DS218+ )
I hope that you’ll find this migration problems interesting and important as we Synology users are being pushed out step by step from that echo system.
Thanks
Henrik
