  Which Synology NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-07-2025, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Primarily for storage of photos and video clips (6 people); backup of iPhones and computers (6 people); and monthly storage of 24/7 recording of Home security camera Aqara G5 (1 camera). Remote access of files and security video. Would like 2.5 gbe, upgradeability, variety of storage sizes, and ease of use.

NAS recommendations for photo and video
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-07-2025, 07:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking to buy a NAS for my family to replace Google Photos. Main use: years of family photos and videos, searchable and organised with AI (face detection, albums, timeline, location tags). We want remote access, sharing, and smart features similar to Google Photos, with full privacy and no ongoing fees. Budget is around A$900 (can stretch a bit during discounts). I prefer Synology (DS224+, DS225+) for simplicity, but also considering QNAP TS-253D or others. Needs to be future-proof (4 users), minimum 4TB usable (preferably mirrored), and as plug-and-play as possible. Will access from Mac, iPhones, and remotely. Would love help deciding between Synology/QNAP and HDD options (WD Red vs Synology HAT3300), and whether Synology Photos alone is enough or if I should run PhotoPrism too. Thanks!

Btw I have watched your video on disabling the bios to boot from the native ugreen UGos pro OS but that's a different Nas model hence was curious would it be the same for this model. Sorry again.

Thanks.

bios settings accessible of dxp2800 to enable boot from usb SSD (for true Nas scale)
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-06-2025, 08:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi I'm hoping to purchase a ugreen dxp2800 but want option of being able to put truenas scale on it without wiping the ugreen UGos pro OS on it in case I want to revert back. As nobody seems to have done a complete teardown of the nas I was hoping you could tell me if you still have yours if it's possible to go into the bios of the dxp2800 and change boot options to boot from usb SSD??
Thanks

Hi Rob

I am installing TS364 and I have 2 4TB Red plus and 1 8TB red pro and my thinking was to have the two 4TB mirrored on one 8TB. Is this config possible and if so how do I do that?

Thanks

  NAS update
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-05-2025, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have been using a 2 bay Zyxel NSA325 for almost 10 years. I was never really pleased with the GUI it offered and do NOT consider myself a network whiz. Looking for a replacement. A key feature for me would be the simplicity of setup and use. Thinking a 4 bay as my drives in the old system seem to be healthy and If i get 2 new ones to go with these in a upgrade should work for me. (4 x 2TB). As far as which to chose, again something in the NAS for Dummies range is probably for me.

Best NAS for plex? With alot of bays 6 min
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-03-2025, 06:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Just need something to replace my getting old Qnap TVS-682. I need more than 6 bays if possible, 8 ideally. Main priority on low power usage > storage > cost > sound (db)

It is only used for plex, 11 docker containers, some python scripts. Max 4-5 4k transcodes at any one time.

I hope this finds you well. I'm a fan of your YouTube Chanel. I want an older Synology 2U NAS.

Desired specifications:

2U Rack (Prefer shallow depth, but not a deal breaker)
Upgradeable Intel CPU
Upgradeable RAM
Upgradeable NIC to 10bg
Read/Write cache drives.
Accepts Western Digital Red drives.

I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Thank you for your time.

  Recommendation for 10G Mini PC
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-02-2025, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, long story short since I already ran into the 900 character limit earlier.
Since I have to downsize my homelab because of moving into a new apartment next year I´d really appreciate your advice on a MiniPC.
I have a 10G mostly Flash Storage Main Server and 4 HDD Backup PCs, one of which remote. I am currently using a DIY PC with an i5 13500 and 10G Nic to manage everything in thsi network, from download linux isos to doing the backups. Unfortunately I need to sell this PC for a more powerefficient solution. For this Management PC I´m looking for a Mini PC that should be as powerefficient as possible in idle, yet it shoudl be powerful enough to handle everything I may throw at it, so something round about the performance of my current 13500 should be fine. It needs to have 10G built in or a way to add it, ideally copper instead of SFP+, also need s to be reliable.

  Synology Ext4 to BTRFS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-02-2025, 08:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Ds923+ with 3 disk of 4tb 1 storage pool 1 volume Ext4.
I also have 4tb USB storage attached for backup.
What's the best strategy to go from Ext4 to BTRFS.

Is full backup. Delete volume, rebuild volume, restore. All apps are not backed up as not supported by hyper backup.

I have another volume for VM based on SSD and SSD cache on another SSD.

Virtual machine manager and container manager are not backed up. So I guess I will need to reinstall and configure.

I need som guidance on this

Yours
/JP
