M.2 WD Black in a low usage home NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-05-2023, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there and thanks for the videos and help. I'm going to be picking up a Lockerstor2 Gen 2 for automated PC backup for 1 PC as well as using the NAS as an occasional Plex server for our family of 2.

Being that this NAS will be pretty low usage, I was wondering if I could put in WD black M.2 SSDs vs using WD Red.

I'm thinking of putting in 2 TB in Raid 1 to start which is sufficient space for now, and adding more storage later - either 2 more M.2s or traditional hard drives.

Love to get your thoughts on the WD black for my application. I have the WD blacks as the main drives in my PC which gets more use than the NAS would get - thus my question.

Thanks and enjoy the coffee :-)
Doug

I've been recently watching your videos on You tube and they are great.

Can you help me with my storage and direct attached situation.

Brief history: I'm a freelance photo videographer graphic designer and going to do some you tube.

Also a Data horder as 50yr old and had many images and graphics from past jobs. Years gone bye. Yes I need to weed it all out.

Plus all my home family imagery plus movies I ripped years ago I have which we use to use Apple TV to watch Until Streaming was invented.

Ive had Drobos ( had 5d, 5D3 and and 8d and (5d3 stopped working).
my drobo It’s been acting very weird so decided to go for a NAS even though I have tried Drobo NAS in the past and been abysmal.( so sold that on eBay)
IM a Mac person not a pc person so this is hard for me. Was gonna go for synology 1819+ what do you think witb 10gbs into my Untra Mac Studio. What would you suggest.
Thanks in advance. jen

  NAS advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-04-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello guys, I follow your channel for quite a while and it's brilliant!
For a few years I am considering to get myself NAS. I am photographer and the main reason for getting NAS is to backup my photos. Currently I only have 4TB external drive, 4TB internal drive and 10TB internal drive. Apart from photos there are also movies, music and other usual stuff. But the photos are the most important. Also, I currently have Raspberry Pi 2B serving Logitech Media Server, PHP and MySQL server, DNS, etc.
What I am hoping for is to have NAS for backing up my photos, serving media, have docker containers running Logitech Media Server and other. I almost bought Synology DS920+ but then my hopes went for DS923+. But I am kind of disappointed with its specs.
Anyway I prefer Synology and DS923+ still seems best choice.
Not sure which drives to use, I have WD Red now. Capacity 12TB+ each. Two as backup hence 4-bay NAS, not sure which RAID configuration. Btw seagulls in the background are cool ;-) Thx

  NAS Diskstation
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-04-2023, 01:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I have an iMac Pro and I have 8TB of data on the external hard disk.
I want to buy a NAS diskstation but I don't know which one works best on MacOS.

I look for Synergy DS918+ but I want your's opinion Smile
Does DS918+ have some cons with Mac? If does, which one?
Do you prefer more WD Red hard disk for NAS or Iron Wolf Pro NAS?

Do you prefer to have multiple hard drives of smaller capacity or two 12 or 16TB drives as I was also looking at the Synology DS220+?
Does DS220+ works well with MacOS or he also have some cons?

I new in this and I hope you will understand my question Smile

Thanks a lot and have a nice day,

Alan

  NAS capacity increase
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-04-2023, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi - Ive been running a 4 bay Asustor AS5304T for the last few years, but ive now reached the storage capacity limit.

Im currently running a Celeron 1.50Ghz / 4Gb RAM / 21Tb HDD (28Tb RAID 5) system.

The main use is as a Plex 4k media streamer, but it's also a file store / backup host.

What are the best value for money HDDs I should go for, looking at Plex / 4k media optimisation if there is that option?

Re capacity, ballpark of double the 21Tb (28Tb RAID5) I have today, but new capacity depending on recommended disc price.

Thanks,
Duncan

Expanded storage pool failed - degraded raid
Posted by: kuno - 03-04-2023, 07:55 AM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

I have a DS1522+. Unfortunately my expansion of the storage pool failed in a RAID 5. I have four 10TB drives and added a fifth and it failed. Now the RAID is degraded. I only used about 55% of my storage.

I can't get a correct replacement unfortunately. Is there a way to undo the expansion and go back to my 4 drives and fix the degraded status? Or will I have to re-do the entire raid array? I have my data all backed up.

For context I had 4 shucked drives. Got a fifth which failed. I tried to get a replacement but that drive is a slightly different 10TB model after I shucked it.

Thank you!

  NAS Suggestion
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-04-2023, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Would like to centralize and simplify my data warehousing. Currently have about 100gb of "cloud storage" over several different providers, about 2tb of audio files (mp3, mp4, audiobooks), 2tb of television programs stored as mp4, 2tb of movies in mp4 mostly 720p and 1080p, some smaller. 3 desktop mac's with about 1tb on each system (one currently hosts all of the audio/video library so not counted here). Our internal network is throttled to 1Gb/s due to internet provider's combined modem/router. I plan to connect a backup drive to whatever NAS selected to provide backup of the NAS. All user devices are Apple (mac, ipad, iphone). I have no preference of NAS brand, but think maybe 4 drives is probably better than 2.

  TS-264 M.2
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-03-2023, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

QNAP TS-264-8G
as for heatsinks for the M.2 NVMe SSDs (2X 970_EVO_plus_500GB):

- what's the max. height?

- any recommended heatsink?

- or should I get those small ones similar to what comes with other QNAP models? especially that i've read we should cool the controller not the NANDs (I'de really like your opinion on that)..

deeply appreciated Smile

How to list/review all Snapshot schedules on QTS
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-03-2023, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I've purchased a QNAP 464 based on your excellent reviews etc. and I've setup a range of snapshot schedules but I'm struggling to find where in QTS/within the snapshot manager app I can obtain a listing of all current snapshot schedules so I can review them and ensure they're correct and suitable. Appreciate any clarity or advice you may be able to provide. Thank you greatly.
