|   Using >16TB drives in a Synology DS1821+  |

				I have a Synology DS1821+ that is full of 14TB drives... they had the best $/TB at the time that I was populating it.
I now need to increase the capacity of the NAS box but the largest drives - other than the very expensive Synology ones - that are compatible are 16TB and that's just too small a change for the cost.
I'd like to start replacing the 14TB drives with either 18TB or 20TB, using WD Red Pro devices, but I'm concerned that they are considered to be 'incompatible' by Synology.
My (basic) questions are:
1. Am I at risk of having issues with the WD drives?
2. Is Synology likely to update their compatibility lists at some (reasonable) time in the future?
[The 14TB drives that are replaced will go into a DS920+ that I also have that currently uses 10TB drives... I'm not a big fan of the expansion chassis available from Synology...]

				Hello! This would be my first NAS.
I think I'd use it as storage of iphone/ipad backups, photos and videos.
I would like to use at least RAID 1, to have a backup, in case of failure of one of the drives
I've got an Apple ecosystem (iphone/ipad/macbook).
My router is sitting on a shelf (weist height) in a huge livingroom, 1 meter behind a sofa.
I'm routing towards Synology for its software and its MAC compatibility.
However, I'm not sure about which model to buy and which hard drives.
I'd like to have a decent system and my priorities are:
1. MAC COMPATIBILTY;
2. SILENCE: I'll have to connect the NAS to the router, near the wall of my main room and not, instead, in a closet;
3. POWER EFFICIENCY: I'd like to have a system that doesn't drain too much electricity.
I don't know if DS223 would be enough or if is better DS220+ or DS224+.
I'm was thinking about a 2-bay, but maybe even a 4-bay.
I've read that often the noise made by the NAS can be pretty annoying. Is it true?
Thanx!

				My 12 year old ReadyNas Duo is dying. Time to replace. I use this for staorage, LOTS of photography and Music and Videos I stream wirelessly in my home network via DLNA. I want at least the same functions. Likely some I do not even know I want as been a long time since I looked. RAID, but which? 4 Bay for expansion in sytorage.

DS423+ looked like the sweet spot until I read your review. Whick would you pick?

Thanks.

				Researching QNAP for Plex but will likely spin up some basic VMs on it over time (Home Assistant, etc.). I have 9 kids; 4 have moved out but would stream remotely. Video library is 99% H.264; assume I can make sure any additions are as well if this reduces transcoding? Worried about outgrowing the TS-464. Nearly got the TVS-h674-i3 but overkill? $1,700 before drives. Considered TVS-h474 but the PT CPU and I figured the larger chassis is better if a GPU (P2000) is ever needed. Think I've ruled out TVS-x72XT. Have 1Gbps fiber Internet and some hi-end networking gear (with several 10G & 2.5G ports available to the NAS). 25U Enclosed rack in basement so no noise concerns. Thoughts? I would populate the m.2 slots - but what do you think about SSDs for the main bays? Best RAID level for Plex performance? Using Ubiquiti UDM-SE Pro with NVR so I would likely not use it for cameras. Thanks!!!

				I'd buy a new Synology to replace my ancient one but I've got a basically endless supply of used SAS drives (8-12TB a piece) from decomm'ed equipment.
What's a good hands off QUIET box I can shove them into then forget about for the next ~5 years? 8 hot-swap SAS bays would be perfect.
Bonus points if it comes with hardware transcode.
Keep in mind I'm in europe so some stuff in unavailable to me.

				I have (stupidly/stubbornly) been leaving my QNAP NAS accessible on the internet with no security in place. recently I have been getting attacked by hundreds of IPs trying to hack the password. I have taken my NAS offline and I am ready to set up a security system so that I won't be victim to ransomware (Hopefully it's not already infected) QNAP gurus suggest using a Raspberry Pi as a VPN server. Can You suggest the same or something easier for a neophyte? Thanks and love your content!!!

				I recently bought a 5-bay and a 10-bay JBOD enclosures made by Sabrent. Unfortunately, they died at about the 30-day mark and Amazon refunded my money. Perhaps I bought my 9 20TB Seagate EXOS drives prior to buying the enclosure and, now, I find that most JBOD enclosures out there (nominally) max at 18TB drives. Bottom line, I'm stuck with the drives and can't find a box to put them in. When I saw this Terramaster T12-423, I thought it might fit the bill. . . except for the price. Can you justify why it's worth the money or recommend another box within my budget, please?

Thanks for your help.
