  Begging networking
Posted by: Kennz - 09-17-2023, 09:10 AM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

Hi, I am in the market for a Nas that is primarily for Hi res audio storage and delivery to a Dac. My question is which machine would best do this, software etc and more importantly how would it be connected. I understand IT up to a point and know AV very well so I am trying to marry them.
The plan is Nas to router not switch (right?) then the tricky part switch to Dac then analogue out to receiver. Dac’s usually don’t have Ethernet inputs. How do I get audio data from the network into a Dac is the question. Cheers.

Exclamation failed playback of Top Gun Maverick 2022 IMAX H264 file in your videos
Posted by: optimus_prime - 09-13-2023, 05:40 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

In your Plex 4k videos, this file has failed playback on most NAS devices up to the point that it seems NAS can't play video files near 80 Mb/s bitrate. But after reading through a few people's posts on Reddit they claim that a direct play of such heavy files is possible with any home-based NAS like DS 920+ and TS 464.
I want to make a purchase decision based on your videos but it seems that there is some discrepancy regarding the top gun file which was not even played by QNAP TVS-h874 in one of your videos.
My use case required me to play heavy Blu-ray discs that I have ripped ranging between 40-100 Mb/s(HEVC). After watching your videos it made an impression that these files can't be played by any budget home NAS and will require a more expensive NAS.
I just wanted confirmation that this is actually true and the file is somehow not corrupted.
Also if it's possible to omit/replace that file with some other equivalent bit rate files would be helpful in your future videos.

  What to buy???
Posted by: HeRo - 09-13-2023, 05:44 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

So I own a Qnap NAS for years now. Only using it for file storage. Because I find the UI, setup and configuration to difficult. I want to be able to do more. So I’m looking at Synology. Seems like their approach would be what I’m looking for. But looking at test and models it seems I need to select a NAS for certain purpose. I’ve been looking at a 4-6 bay tower unit. And it seems that either it is focussed on home use with quad core and integrated graphic CPU, or it is more business oriented with dual core and more expansion capabilities in regards to storage and network. I find it really difficult to choose. How to decide? Who’s to say what I would need/want in about a few years? Isn’t their a machine that can do it all?

  Synology DS720+ with DX517 Question
Posted by: Arndrell - 09-10-2023, 12:23 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (2)

Good Afternoon,

My current setup is Synology a DS720+ (1GB RAM upgrade, 2x 16tb Ironwolf Pro -SHR)  mainly for Plex/Infuse MKV files played over network..
I very quickly ran out of space, not realising how much my movie collection would take up (yeah, I know, should have just bought a 920+) and after much deliberation I have taken the plunge and ordered the DX 517, loading it up with 2x Irowolf Pro 2tb (spares from when I first got the DS720+) currently and setting it up as Volume 2..

What I want to do is move the smaller drives from the the DX 517 to the DS 720+, using these for general storage and the larger drives (with the movie data on) to the DX 517, in a month or so I will buy another 2x 16tb drives for the DX 517 and continue ripping the remaining movie collection..

TLDR
Question: Can I just physically move the drives from DX720+ to DX517 to without causing an issue?

Thank you in advance

Any way to get DSM 7.2 to use usb ethernet upgrade for internet connection?
Posted by: junkin - 09-09-2023, 05:02 AM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

Hi, all!

Context:
I just followed the great guide youtube.com/watch?v=iMJ-Lhyq16s ("Synology 2.5GbE / 5GbE USB Adapter Setup Guide - DSM 7 Version") and added a 2.5g ethernet usb adapter to my aging Synology DS 218+ (running DSM 7.2). The Control Panel > Network > Network Interface gui shows both the original 1000Mbps and the new 2500Mbps LAN nics are connected and set to different static ips, with the same subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server.  The router/modem from the ISP, and both the 1Gbps and 2.5Gbpsethernet cables from the nas are running directly into a 2.5g unmanaged switch with cat 7 cables. With this setup I can access my docker services ports easily on either new or old nic ip.

Main Question:

One reason I decided to do the upgrade is because my new ISP has me on a promotional package with 1500Mbps download, and I thought I might as well try to max that out. But with when I run an interent speed test (with both nas ethernet ports still connected), I still get a result of ~1000Gbps, rather than ~1500. If I boot with both connected and then disconnect the 1Gbps ethernet, I can still access the docker service ports on the new ip, but don't seem to get any internet connection. Is there something else I need to do (if it's actually possible) to get the nas to use the new 2.5g ethernet for connecting to the internet rather than the old ~1000Gbps connection? I've found Control Panel > Network > Network Interface > Manage > Service Order, but as far as I can tell, changing the order doesn't change anything.

Secondary Question:
If there's a way to solve the main question, is there any way to use the original 1000Gbps ethernet connection as a backup in case the 2500Gbps usb connection fails?

Thank you so much for any help! I'm quite out of my depth on networking at this point haha Blush

Enterprise versus Consumer Hardware for NAS Build
Posted by: ajama13 - 09-07-2023, 03:19 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I am a recent subscriber, but honestly, I do know how I didn't discover NAS Compares earlier. In terms of the reliability of UnRaid, is there a significant difference in using consumer vs. server-grade hardware? I ask as being from the UK, the energy prices are bonkers, so having an R210 II running 24/7 with all the heat it generates, I'm at my wits end and am currently looking for a replacement.

My main concern is the motherboard platform and the lack of ECC memory. In your experience, is it worth the risk for a home user?

Frustrations after new purchase - Asustor
Posted by: jimmysc95667 - 09-04-2023, 08:45 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hello,
I just posted below to your channel ...
I am considering returning this device.  Should I be looking at Synology or QNAP?  I am willing to increase the budget to get simplicity and reliability.  Thanks much in advance.

NASCompares ... really appreciate the videos and the honest open-source information. I was looking to migrate from older Western Digital NAS devices for better security and improved network speed. My use case is accessing files for personal and work from home productivity using multiple devices. I ended up going with an Asustor AS6704T and WHAT A NIGHTMARE. The attractions were the dual 2.5G ethernet ports and the SSD caching. Neither really works reliably, although in fairness a network bottleneck, despite completed network upgrades, could be purely network related and not in the NAS. The GUI is unclear and gives contradictory information in different locations. Even the physical build quality is lacking. A rear screw on the case stripped, after one removal and one reinstall, while opening it to install the nvme SSD's. ( Why is there not simply a door ? ) Since my new hard drives were inside, I had to get inventive and ultimately aggressive to get it open ... not nice in a new device. I avoided Synology due to its inflexibility regarding drive brands ... and am now wondering if that was a bad idea. I am still troubleshooting and making adjustments, I will update here if things improve in case anyone is looking at this. One specific: If you have an ASUSTOR ... note the table in the online manual relating to nvme SSD capacity, and the RAM required. It allowed me to install more SSD capacity than the RAM would allow and it seems this has caused problems.

QNAP QTS FIRMWARE BUG (Long but a must read)
Posted by: WonderWoman - 08-29-2023, 04:53 PM - Forum: Existing NAS users - Replies (1)

Hello,

I have a QNAP TS-932PX with 2 x 16TB SeaGate Ironwolf drives.

I recently experienced a problem with my QNAP. NAS drive. As a result o a firmware update that occurred what is now 3 firmware updates ago.  This bug is not being talked about anywhere and I want to get the word out to as many social media platforms and creators and influencers as possible because this is a serious bug that needs to be acknowledged by QNAP. and addressed and fixed.

The issue is affecting connectivity/access to the drive not only just access in certain situations (which I will detail shortly) but also affecting the ability for the Acronis. backup and restore program to perform its core functionality of full system backups as well as restoring from an existing backup if the location is on the NAS drive.

The firmware version that I had at the time the update became available was version 5.0.1.2425 which was functioning perfectly, normally.  I performed. an update to my. NAS drive. back approximately at the end of June, or beginning of July when a firmware update became available.  Until then, everything was working perfectly.  I was able to access my drive.by being connected through the Files app which is native to the iPadOS on  my iPad Pro and. I was also able to perform full system backups and restores using my Acronis product.  Prior to doing that firmware update for the drive the login screen would show both the username and the password box on the same login screen; after the update the login screen would only have the username screen where you would enter your username, hit enter and go to the next screen which would ask for your password.  My ability to access. the drive through Windows and being mapped to various folders from within my Windows 11 Pro as well as my Windows 10 Pro on a second laptop that I have which is 12 years old never changed and I was always able to remain functional on the basic access level and I was also able to successfully log into the QTS operating system for my QNAP NAS drive.

After I did the update all that I mentioned above changed.  I was no longer able to access. My drive on my iPad and it would not connect and I even tried to remove the drive from my iPad and reconnect to it several times and it would still have access connection issues. My Acronis software stopped being capable of doing full system backups and it would fail when I would try to access an existing old backup to restore some folders with files in them.  The only thing the Acronis software would be capable of doing would be backups of small individual folders with files in them.

I opened a ticket directly with QNAP. and I also contacted Acronis.  The very first thing I told both companies was that this all of a sudden started happening after I had done that first firmware update to the QTS operating system for the drive. I have worked diligently over the past several weeks with both companies. I have done numerous remote connected sessions. With Acronis and I have done ONLY ONE remote connect session with QNAP.  The Acronis company was wonderful. They stuck with me throughout everything. I tried working with QNAP however they are impossible to deal with and it is because they are located. In China and that makes it impossible to talk to them on the phone because they don't have any phone support for people that are not business users; their time zone is opposite to being in the United States where I am and I am certain there is also a language barrier that exists in an extreme sense.  I only had. ONE SINGLE remote connect session with that company.  It would take them days to reply to my ticket which is disgusting and unacceptable and they would never acknowledge that there is a problem.  Acronis, on the other hand, was always on the ball, staying in touch with me and they admitted that they are aware there is a problem with their software and this particular manufacturer for these drives. I give the Acronis company and its support team five gold stars to for honesty and for how well they took care of me.

QNAP Was a total failure for their support. They never acknowledged that there is a problem which is disgusting.  I had to. literally as the expression goes, “pull teeth” to get them. to accept the fact that we needed to try troubleshooting this on the firmware level not through the user controls available through the GUI user interface and control panel settings.  On one of the updates on my ticket, they indicated that a new update had just gone out on that morning which would have made it update number three since I had the problem start.  It was me, not them. Suggesting that we consider a rollback of the QTS operating system.  We also discussed whether I should do the most recent firmware update that had just been released, or just simply go for the rollback.  QNAP confirmed that even if I did the most recent firmware update I would still have the option of performing a rollback available to me if the firmware update did not fix the problems.  I also discussed this with Acronis since I had another remote connection troubleshooting session coming up..  Acronis and I decided that since QNAP. Had stated that even if I do the most recent firmware update, if it still does not resolve the issue, I still have the option of doing the rollback to. firmware version 5.0.1.2425. (which I will simply refer to as 2425).  I performed the update while on remote connected session with Acronis and that did not solve the issue.  We then went ahead and processed the rollback to version 2425 and that, lo and behold, resolved the issue.

I am doing this posting because I am trying to get this situation to go as close to viral, if not actually viral, on social media as possible. QNAP needs to take ownership and admit that they “screwed the pooch” with their update that went out  to update firmware version 2425.  Until QNAP takes ownership and admits that they “screwed the pooch” with their update and fix it, I am “dead in the water” and cannot update my firmware to any newer versions, which means I will not be able to get security updates.

I want to hear from other people who have any sort of access or functionality problems with any programs that they have or devices that they have and use. We need to get vocal otherwise they will never admit this happened and will never fix it. I know there are other people out there that are having kind of crazy various access problems and functionality problems. Now is the time to make them heard. If anyone knows any NAS community influencers please share this information with them.

Here are some screenshots of the ticket conversation I am having with QNAP (non) support:

  QNAP TS653d Edge TPU install
Posted by: Melty Man - 08-23-2023, 06:23 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (1)

Hi,

First, sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I have a QNAP TS653d and I want to install the Google Coral Edge TPU. I bought this: Edge TPU into Legacy and New Systems Using a Standard M.2-2280-B-M-S3, this should fit my NAS. Do you just install it in the slot and power on the NAS? How do you go about the installation? What about drivers? The chip came from Amazon vendor, but no instructions. The NAS is running the QNAP OS, some form of Linux maybe?

Please let me know where to start.

Thanks in advance!

Todd
