  DS723+
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-23-2023, 02:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Dear Rob,
I have a DS1520+ with about 25TB stored so far of Media for Plex.
I want to backup this data so i do not loose it. I was given some advice to buy a 2nd entry level NAS with high capacity drives so i can use Hyper backup (as per your video recently). basically copying a whole system image to a 2nd NAS using Hyper Backup / Vault.
Do you have any advice what NAS i should buy? DS723+?
I would need to buy 2 x 18TB drives to be used for storage so i have capacity to grow my storage pool / Volume.

Regards

Gary Davis

Can I edit video from this Nas set up
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-23-2023, 08:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello there,

Let me start off by saying how helpful I've found your YouTube content.

I work for a small business which has two video editors and a couple of graphic designers. We house all of our files on Google Drive. I'd like to get some local storage other than small Samsung T7 drives to help keep our storage and file structure cleaner.

If I was to get a Qnap H874, fill it with 24tb ironwolf pro's in raid 5 and ssd caching do you think that two people would be able to edit 4k video off it, while maybe another is editing photos on the drive all at the same time? When I look at the speed we should get from the 8 drives in raid 5 it seems possible, but I just have no real life experience.

If this worked the plan would be that this Nas is mirrored to Google Drive.

Also do you build these Nas's for people? Is this something we could order from you?

Many thanks

Yasha

  NAS & Network Help Needed
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-23-2023, 01:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I stumbled upon your channel recently looking for a solution for my video editing and storage problem. I am currently looking at creating 2 videos on my channel per week however a single video can take up 50GB - 100GB on Final Cut Pro. I also run a course and there's a lot of content that I don't want to have to delete for space.
I would love to chat about a solution that would be suitable for my needs. Now I'm a lone wolf video editor for my own channel so I don't have the budget of these video production companies but I want to invest in this.

In any case, what I'm looking at is 1522+ and perhaps adding two SSDs and 3 20GB Ironwolf SATA drives.

I can't afford all of this at the moment but I want to know what would be best in the future.

I also want to upgrade to a 10GbE network but have no clue where to start in terms of what to get. I use a MacBook Pro 16 M2 but I think I'm safe with 2.5GbE through my Caldigit TS4 dock which I believe has a 2.5GbE.

  2.5GBe switches
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-22-2023, 09:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

I am looking for a 16 port 2.5G switch and I absolutely cannot find one from any manufacturer. Is there one that you are aware of? I have a total of 13 wired connections in my home for various devices and while not all of them have a 2.5G port to take advantage of the added speed, I don't necessarily want to have two 8 port switches in my set up. Even a combination of gig and 2.5GBe ports will do, but I haven't found a single one in that combo either. Is there a reason why there isn't a single manufacturer that has a 16 port 2.5 G switch out there? I've looked at all the QNAP options as well, but none that have 16 ports. All our work and home laptops can take advantage of 2.5 G and all cabling is cat 6e.

Thanks for the help.

  Drobo 5D3 replacement
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-22-2023, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

My Drobo 5D3 has failed. It has 2 x 8TGB and 3 x 4 TB drives with single-disk redundancy. I use it to archive video and need a replacement that offers redundancy. I don't need Thunderbolt. USB3.2 is fine. I also don't need transcoding, VM installation etc. Just storage, redundancy and decent speed.

5 bay nas - Synology or Qnap
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-21-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi there, thank you in advance.
I am currently using a drobo 5d for file storage and backup, I am a little worried as they have gone bust and if the unit goes I would potentially lose everything (I do have backblaze backup.)
I am considering a nas drive, to allow me to access business & personal files from anywhere with an internet connection.
I also have multiple large and growing Lightroom catalogs as well as a growing raw video/ da vinci resolve collection growing. ( I am trying to get my own youtube channel up and running.
So would like to be able to store and work via the nas connected direct to my pc or future network via 10gb ethernet.
i am looking at either the 5 bay synology and qnap solutions as I like the option to expand the bays for future growth. Plus the 5 bays fit in the space I have available perfectly.
From all the reviews and write ups there doesn't seem to be anything written in the last 6 months. I am happy to wait if a new unit is due for realise this year.

TS-453A drive failing, two Storage Pools
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-21-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi!
So, my trusty TS-453A is struggling a bit, drive 2 has a bad block. It has been a learning journey. Drives 1 and 2 are in Storage Pool 1, thick volume, no RAID, system is on this Pool. Drives 3 and 4 are in Storage Pool 2, RAID1. All 4 drives are WB 6TB.

Pool 1 is quite full so I have been backing up all the files on it that I wish to keep, to an external USB HDD.
Pool 2 is currently fine.

My questions: is there a way for me just replace Drive 2 and then to convert Pool 1 into RAID 1, without restarting the OS install from scratch?
If that is not possible, is it possible for me to wipe Drive 1 + New Drive 2 to do a fresh QTS install (RAID1 this time), without risking Pool 2 data loss?

Thank you for your wisdom in advance, and I am embarrassed to say that I envy your job - playing with my NAS is my hobby and the day job is far more boring!

Cheers,

Mario

  Need a new NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-21-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I had an old Iomega NAS that was working fine, but was no longer supported so I couldn't access. It was expensive to get data. I don't want that to happen again. I am a home user, need to store photos and videos, and documents. It would be great to have photos from iOS and Android devices backed up so I don't have to move photos to computer and then network drive. I use PCs, so easy interface with Windows is a plus. Once I get this setup I would like to, down the line, get an external HD and then use that to make a 2ndary backup from the NAS. I'm not super tech savvy. I basically need to set it and forget it, AND be able to access the data long term. I can't do this Iomega thing again. If the NAS manufacturer didn't support the device anymore, I would like the ability to pop the HDD out and use an adapter and access with PC. Also does it matter WD or Seagate HDD? Thank you very much for your help!

  Synology Hot Spare
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-21-2023, 11:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently have a Synology DS920+ utilising 3 of the 4 available drives in one storage pool being Bay1 16TB, Bay2 8TB, Bay3 8TB, Bay 4 spare. The RAID type I am using is SHR.

I also have another 16TB drive which I had initially anticipated on growing my available storage pool with, but do not currently require that additional storage immediately.

My questions;
1. If I use the spare 16TB drive as a hot spare, can I ever re-allocate its capacity to instead by part of my storage pool instead of being a hot spare?
2. If this is achievable, do you think it is the best use of the currently UN-utilised storage capacity?

My thought process is as follows;
With a hot spare, I currently have 16TB available in my storage pool, with the potential to grow this to 32TB (3x16TB) while still maintaining a 16TB hot spare, which I could potentially convert to be part of the pool if yet more storage capacity is ever required.

  Plex Photos on NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-21-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have been using Plex on my Synology DS216j for a few years, mainly for viewing my music video collection. I have been looking for a way to view my photo collection currently on Flickr and have tried Plex. I am finding it is very slow to load each photo, I have tried the various fixes suggested on-line but they have no effect. This seems to be a common problem, do you know of a fix?
