  Thank you/suggestion for topics
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-19-2024, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Wow, I thought I over-analyzed things! Thank you! I ended up getting a two bay Synology with small hardrives. I used many sources to decide...yours was most thorough. I don't know if this is out of your realm for topics but how about: 1. Why do I need a nas anyway...I can just use the cloud (onedrive, google, etc)? 2. Strategies for safely preserving precious files (for home) with a nas in conjunction with a cloud subscription.
There's probably more than just two topics in these. Hope this helps you. Thanks again so much!

  NAS Initialization w/SSD
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-19-2024, 03:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

Thank you for your original reply to my NAS question. I am finally have all the parts I need to re-initialize my Asustor 5404T NAS and I had a couple of follow up questions. So I have backed up everything onto an external drive and I am ready to start fresh. I removed all of my HDD's from the unit and installed the following SSD:

WD Redâ„¢ SA500 NAS SATA SSD 1TB

However when I go to initialize the drive via the Asustor Command Center, it doesn't detect a drive and asks me to insert a HDD in order to proceed. Am I missing a step?

Do I need to re-insert the 2 HDD's I have in order to initialize the SSD as the OS drive?

I don't know if it's relevant, but I upgraded the amount of RAM I had to 16 GB (2 x 8GB) a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks,
Mitch

  Home NAS please help.
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-19-2024, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Nas for home plex, cloud storage and possible upgradable RAM.

Looking to do some 4k H.264 files and if I use only licenced players in home then maybe H.265. All mkv or MP4

I do a bit of youtube as a hobby, I need cloud storage

But Plex and cloud can be a first and I may get a second NAS just for my photo and video editing later.

Im a little unsure if I need transcoding ability or not, ill try not to use it if my statement above I can acheive.

But I have a 2 bay DS213+ which is very old and only suports syno 6.2

I did look at 923+ 1522 Qnap and others but I really like the synology.

But what would you suggest please

KR Simon

Plex - do i need to upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-19-2024, 04:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have DS418play running plex, 3 kids and 2 parents are sometimes using server across 5 or more devices.

Am i asking to much of this NAS, should I be looking to upgrade?

Content is mostly 1080p, though all new content is 4k where possible.

About to abandon streaming services and go solely with plex, want to be best prepared.

Many thanks

  QNAP to Synology Upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-19-2024, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm upgrading my QNAP TS-469PRO due to 1) it is no longer supported by QNAP, 2) security issues with QNAP, and 3) the desire for a more user-friendly OS. I have decided the Synology DS1522+ may be the optimal solution with my use case (backups of Macbook Pro and Dell laptops-my spouse is a Realtor and operates her business from home & I'm retired, but lots of photo and video editing). I'm considering is a DS1522+ with 32GB RAM, Synology 10GbE Network Module, and 5 x Seagate Exos X16 ST16000NM003G 16TB SED HDD. The Seagate drives are not on the Synology compatibility list, but have seen enough videos to know this probably isn't an issue. I'll defer purchase of NVMe at this point.

Questions:
1) do you see any issues with the choices I've made, especially the inclusion of SED drives?
2) do you agree with my deferral of NVMe?
3) given that the DS1522+ is a 2022 model, what is the estimated support window for this model?
4) any other advice or considerations?

Thanks for your input.

  Upgrade

Currently using a DS115 with a WD20EFRX. No faults and very little used but aware of the age. I keep family photos on the NAS and back up my business laptop to it using Drive. Also have C2 back up. Recently tried backing up my iPad because I was trying to use it for business but have reverted to the old laptop.
Now synchronising my laptop files with one cloud and backing up to DS115.
I looked at the Beestation but not sure I like the inability to change the drive. Also believe they might be using a lower quality drive.
Looking at DS223J. Will I see a big improvement in performance? Is this just the memory and chip or do 2 drives help too? Could I utilise my current drive in new NAS or must it be matched exactly?
Would I be better looking at the DS 223 with 2MB memory or even a 224+. Obviously prefer the price of the 223J
Thanks for your assistance. Mo idea who else to ask.
Love your videos!

How to install the OS and configure RAID
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-18-2024, 02:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

So have TVS-472XT with i3 Intel CPU. Updated memory to dual 32gb SODIMM modules, and have ordered a QNAP QM2-2P-244A Dual M.2 22110/2280 Pcie SSD Expansion Card (PCIe Gen2 X4). I have some visual impairment so since had one open slot bought that card for 2 NVME 2TB modules. Existing RJ45 10Gb ethernet is enough and QNAP will be wired to my WIfi7 Netgear router with 1Gb ports and Cat 8 cables.

I will have all this ready by next weekend. I could use some guidance on what OS software to install and where to obtain. Is this where to go? https://www.qnap.com/en-us/download

Should I Install QTS or QTS Hero? Btw I have a Roon Nucleus server and Apple Mac Mini M2 cpu with 16gb ram and 1Tb SSD for MacOS

QNAP Qsync for Mac? Is there software on the Download Center i can install to setup my two RAID-5s and daily management?

  5g wifi 6 portable router
Posted by: Enquiries - 03-17-2024, 11:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. I watched one of your videos. You dive into wifi electronics more than most. Very impressive. Some just do it to earn. You, on the other side, have a passion for it. I would like to know what is the best mobile router I can use through Europe. A router that uses sim card and is capable of lasting over 10 hours. I have seen some cheap ones for 50 euros or so, but your honest opinion is what I value. Based on your videos, that is your strongest suit, and that is very appreciated. In advance, thank you for your time.
