  Synology DS1522+ drive failures
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-10-2023, 05:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've had a DS1522+ for a year, populated with 4x WD Red Plus 10TB HDDs. With no warning, the storage volume degraded and one of the Red Pluses disappeared in the storage list. I removed it, added it again and it re-appeared. I started a repair of the volume but the repair failed within an hour and the drive disappeared. I removed it and tried it in a PC - it didn't power up. WD took 8 weeks to replace it. The (recertified) replacement went into the NAS and the volume repair completed, it then successfully data scrubbed. An hour later the replacement drive died. Again, out and in - this time no reappearance. Into a PC - it didn't power up.

Do DS1522+s kill drives? Is the Red Plus really unreliable - even though they're listed on Synology's compatibility list?

The NAS is lightly used and the nice idea of using SHR2 doesn't seem at all robust with 2 out of 5 failures. I'm trying to determine whether it's NAS or drive. The failures had no prior warning.

Thanks for any help.

  Searching NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-10-2023, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I'm looking for a nas for 80% personal use at home. Initially I would like to store administrative files (~100GB) and create a Jellyfin media server (or plex in the worst case) with around 1000/2000 films in 1080p and some in 4K (more recent films), as well as around a hundred series in 1080p mostly. I plan within 4 years to have a very efficient 4k HDR television. For the remaining 20%, it's anticipation for my job as a software developer, to store software projects and use a VM (maybe). We would have 2 to 3 users for the media server, not necessarily simultaneously, it depends on the day. The devices on which the media is played are an iphone, ipad, hisense vidaa smart tv and dell pc. A hardware or GPU transcoder would be a plus to avoid having to manage the transcoding myself. I have a preference for Synology and Qnap. I can start with two drives on 4 bays.

  Home NAS choices
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-10-2023, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Firstly...thank you for your support, advise & website.
Your you tube channel is great.

I am a home user looking for a 2 bay (or 4) NAS with approx 8tb min per drive. Home devices are full, portables full and cloud full. I want to unload devices of photos etc.
Use is mainly back up photos, video and files, IOS & windows files.
I like the sound of Synology (am open to others) and would appreciate some direction..so many choices and options.
I am not a business and not really needing all the options of software available.
I am reasonably capable tech wise on the prosumer profile.
I get an idea then watch a different review and get turned about.

Cheers

  QuTS outside of qnap?
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-10-2023, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Is it possible to buy just Qnap’s QuTS hero software and run it on a home built nas?
I haven’t found this information on their website, and I don’t want to create an account just to ask them that. Maybe you know?
I like their software, I like ZFS, I like RAID10, I like Quts more than TrueNas Core (Core is a bit complicated, and heavy on the hardware resources), but I don’t like Qnap’s choice of hardware. I would like to run my own hardware with QuTS hero. Is this possible?

Dear sir / Madam,

I work as a photographer for a professional football club and use a 4G MIFI router to send my photos from the stadium during football matches to my client. Could you advise me which 5G MIFI router I could buy the best for this type of work?
Thanks for your response!

  Drobo 5N dead
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-10-2023, 06:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Guys,
Last week my 5N box died so now I have the two drives looking for a new home.

I have tried searching to see if it is possible to simply buy a QNAP or Synology and simply place the existing drives in and migrate / copy to new new drives.

I am using MAC.

If you could be so kind and let me know it would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Mark

hosting media / photos, backups and running extra apps
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-09-2023, 10:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,
im buying my first NAS and photos and videos are critical. I hoped to upload them to the cloud and only keep the thumbnails on my device. When i want to look at them their originals are downloaded and can be edited (amateur level) or i can stream them compressed to my device to simply enjoy. This would absolutely require a good filter system as well as good text, image and people recognition to work for me. >11k Vid/Pics (100GB)

Additionally id like to run backups / email clients/ file sharing and maybe a minecraft server (10ppl + plugins) or some projects on it

Im tech savy enough to write simple code or understand enough to set up the server myself, but mainly I don't fancy having to take care of it for the years to come (+overburdeneding myself)

Original idea: Orange Pi5+ (8 cores (4p+4e) plus 6TOPS NPU) for processing. Software: trueNAS + Nextcloud as a base and build up the rest from there =300€

QNAP &Co.: rel. poor performance (maybe to weak)

prebuild y/n?

  Excessive cache on QNAP?
Posted by: SJG - 10-07-2023, 08:09 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (3)

I recently installed some extra RAM on my QNAP TS-453D (yes I'm aware the recommended max is 8gb) and once I restarted and was nsure checking the resource monitor to ensure it was being recognised properly I noticed that it was showing a cache of over 3gb - is this usual? also is there any guide on how to clear cache and/or trace what is causing such a huge cache to accrue? I've included a screenshot of the resource monitor for reference.

  What NAS?
Posted by: JonMace - 10-05-2023, 06:50 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Currently have a QNAP TS-543 pro, works well does want I have wanted, Jellyfin, and file storage.

Things have changed I now run a company and need more would really like 1 or remote windows 10 or 11 desktops (so Virtual machines)

The 543 pro even on win 7 and office 2019 has too much lag.

Budget is £600 - £700

The another £800 to £1000 for 48 TB of drives

Any ideas?
