I am looking for a BIOS for the MW-N100-4L motherboard.

When adding the 10Gb upgrade can the 2 original 1Gb ports still be utilized?
Considering running VM's in dockers that have their own dedicated ethernet ports utilizing the original two 1 Gb ports

Hi guys, many thanks for all your vids, it's really help me understand my new NAS.

I have the QNAP TS-464 and loving it, however, it is realways noisy. It's not the disk noise per se that's frustrating, but the fact it's always going, all the time, even if the LAN connection is unplugged.

Is this normal? Or is there a way to set a standby? Or do I need to stick it in a cupboard.

The article is amazing, I've been wanting to make a NAS for some time, but I find it difficult to know what exactly I need, and your article and videos were really helpful, I really appreciate it!

Still, I still have doubts about what is best for the purpose that my NAS will have, which I will tell you about below.
I am a web programmer, and I would love to be able to use it as a web server, so I would always have to have Docker containers running.
Of course I also want to use it for photo and video backups and a multimedia server with Plex.
I don't know what RAM memory, processor power it should have, if the speed of the RJ45 will be critical to act as a web server...

As for hard drives, I think I would start with two 8TB ones, one being a replica of the other for safety, or is it not worth it? I would store all the photos and videos on them, as well as the backups. And SSD for the OS and Docker?

I'm an IT Guy and helping a friend who is a video producer for a small non-profit. So I want to make sure the BEST choice and longevity is chosen for his NAS purchase. He is purchasing actually two. One he'll take home work on projects(uses a M1 MAC) and when he's back at work he'll connect a link to the other exact same NAS to Qsyc the difference during the day while he works on a 2nd project.

I thought the new Aug 2024 TS-432X would suffice, but after seeing your review not so sure that one would be fast enough and not really upgradable much. I believe the TVS-472XT-i3-4G already having ThunderBoth 3 ports on unit would be best and then the 2.5GB ports he can create simple network to sync. My question is do you believe that TVS-472XT-i3-4G would be the best option for this setup? Or is the TS-432X ok for now? Or do you recommend a Synology model that would fit the bill? I am unsure what to do, hence why I am reaching out. I currently have a 160TB (16TB*10) rack-mounted RAID 5 array, 50TB Terramaster NAS (10TB*5), along with a cupboard filled with External Hard Drives (2TB - 20TB in size over 50 on last count). I am drowning in Data that I need to keep but unsure of what solution to go for. From watching your videos, I think ZFS is a definite and noticed TrueNAS has its Rack options, but not sure what configuration or layout I should go for. Whatever the solution is, it must be able to run without requiring updates as it will have no internet connection.

I am at the point that I am now seeing issues with both my 1815 units after a power outage, they won't boot, so am looking to get them repaired but I wondered if you had any thoughts on simply migrating from the older units to the 1821+? I would keep the older units (at least on in operation) and the second as a spare unit if needed. Can I simply move the drives one by one from the older unit to the new unit and boot up? Or do I need to start fresh and move the data over via backup restore?

I've watched many of your videos, both new and old, for several months as I've been researching my first home NAS purchase. I've already narrowed down to the "big 4" turnkey manufacturers, but in reading about each company, I noticed that synology, qnap, and asus(tor) are Taiwanese companies while Terramaster (and most of the DIY NAS case&board makers) are Chinese companies.

I'd imagine the taiwanese companies probably make most of their products in China as well. I am concerned about data privacy/security, and very up to date and aware of China's extensive surveillance&hacking/ransomware activities, both in China and abroad. Hearing about Chinese mini-pc's with sketchy backdoors and the like was pretty concerning, and it's not much of a stretch to imagine similar happening on a Chinese-made NAS.

That's making me lean away from terramaster, but is that a reasonable concern, or would you consider the "big 4" comparably "secure", (meaning the company's OS/apps aren't spying on you)?

I am new to NAS/QNAP and cannot figure out what is wrong. I have a nice USB external Blu-Ray/DVD optical drive that also has 4 USB ports and a SD card slot that I've used for an old laptop. Plugging it into a TS-464 and the file station doesn't recognize/mount any disks I put in. It does however recognize all the USB drives as well as USB mouse/keyboard and the SD card that I insert into the optical drive. Is there anyway I can get the QNAP to recognize the DVD/Blu-Ray or CD I put in?

I’m so confused. I’m just looking for a very basic 2 bay nas for reliable storage. Don’t need it to do Plex etc as have a small pc doing decoding. Literally want a cheap as chips reliable mirrored nas internal to my network. Any recommendations? Doesn’t have to be fancy just reliable and relatively sensible with read write times. It will store data and films for processing by Local PC server for Plex but only hosting the files themselves. Thanks. Colin
