  Storage setup
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-28-2023, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

QNAP 653D

2 x 4TB HDDs for general data, shared folders, mp3, video, photo surveillance with 4 x motion detection cameras
1 x 1TB SSD for VMs
1 x 500GB SSD for QTS OS (some suggest QTS saved across all drives so this irrelevant)

Two main users, limited creative content generated, occasional cad drgs

I want to use VM to access Autocad drawings currently on an old windows XP PC

This PC is not connected to the internet. I want to access the content and legacy XP programs

Can I create an image of this PC copy to the NAS to allow access with XP VM

4 others will use for additional storage photos, videos, backup

Raid not needed, I will not create enough changing content to warrant. A regular backup would suffice with separate external HDD

Raid not needed for surveillance, probability of failure at exact time some crucial footage is recorded would be miniscule

Can you please advise best storage set up

DIY NAS: Usage intentions are clear, but unsure of build approach
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-28-2023, 06:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm looking to build a modest home NAS for me and my parents (two households). I know what I want to achieve in terms of usage but have some questions regarding hardware. On the software side of things, however, I'm looking forward to learning more and I expect to spend a lot of time tinkering and optimising. Some context:

COUNTRY: Australia
BUDGET: $500-600 AUD
STORAGE: 8 TB
GOALS:
- General storage for documents and media collections.
- Self-hosting (BitWarden, Photoprism).
- Jellyfin/Plex media server with 1080p transcoding capability on at least two devices. Power-efficient and relatively quiet.

QUESTIONS
- Is this achievable with my budget?
- Repurpose old PCs or build from scratch?
- Separate device for media server? (e.g mini PC)
- Is a dedicated HDD for redundancy necessary?
- RAM - 8 GB or 16 GB?

Thanks in advance.

  Transfer from TS-453Be to TVS-h674

Can I transfer all my data from my old TS-453BE to my new TVS-H674 using Hybrid Back Up Sync? The old NAS is running QTS and the new NAS will be running QuTS hero?

  Synology 2FA and emergengy email
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-27-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have subscribed to your videos, they have been great.

However, I have a fairly big issue that I can't seem to get around.

I have my Synology username and password. However, I have upgraded my phone and now the 2FA "Secure Signin" App is not configured for my NAS, so I can't get the six digit code. Added to which the "emergency passcode" via email is not getting through to my email account.

So, now I'm complexly stuck even though I have my password and username.

Are you able to offer any suggestions?

  First home NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-27-2023, 12:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I've been watching a lot of your videos which have been very helpful learning all about NAS. I am looking to install a NAS at home to act as a media server, as file storage & have the capability to include video surveillance down the line. I feel the Synology Ecosystem is my preferred option.

My biggest uncertainty is for running Plex/Jellyfin. I don't have 4K movies stored (& I'm unlikely to do this in the near future), only DVD/Blu Ray files with at best H.264 Codec for the latter. Therefore, I thin max res I have stored is 1080p. Do I need to worry about the lack of integrated graphics on the DS923+? Looking at the DS423+, the lack of RAM and expandability worries me.
Looking at your videos of the DS423+ & DS923+running plex, I'm guessing theDS923+ will run just fine however I'm looking for an opinion before committing to anything & hoping you can help?

Thanks in advance & for all of your online content,
Yannick

  Best NAS for home use
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-27-2023, 12:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Need a NAS with the following capabilites

1. Supports a fair number of User Share with and without permissions.
2. Can act as a Cloud Storage for IOS and Android (mostly for pictures taken and actively moved to Cloud) as well as for PC's outside my home network.
3. Will support USB drives attached
4. Will support a USB printer so it can be shared across multiple PC (low priority)

Note: I am currently using a Cable Modem connected to COX as my ISP.

Synology NAS - Movies & TV for Home Use
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-26-2023, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm looking to upgrade my DS416 Play that has (4) 4 TB drives to future proof for the next 3-5+ years and to add in another 8-10TB's of content I have on USB external drives.

This will be shared via Plex on AppleTV's (or native Plex on some TVs) in my house and while traveling via ipad, AppleTV etc.

I'm debating 1522+ vs 1621+ and would plan on upgrading the RAM and adding in the 10g Network Card to which ever I decide to go with.

What do you recommend?

  QNAP NAS most secured use
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-26-2023, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Robbie, KUDOs for your fabulous series of YouTube vids. These are an entire education series onto itself. By way of these, you have educated me about QNAP and (despite their cock-up twice) appear to be a comprehensive hardware solution for a "wank" the likes of me. I am keen to shop 453e per your own videos!

Important question needing one more confirmation... IF I don't plug the unit into my router and run it as an archive ONLY terminal... (with kvm attached) my risk from outside ransomware is NULL. Did I get this correctly?

Thanks in advance for your reply. Thanks ever so much for your channel and especially HOW you deliver this very complex content to novices!!!!!

Cheers!

  QNAP RAID Question
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-26-2023, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have just ordered a QNAP TS-664 and I already have 5 WD Red Pro 8TB drives and I am out of money. I plan to set the 5 drives up in the NAS in RAID-5. In a while when I can purchase a sixth drive and install it can the NAS convert from RAID-5 to RAID-6 on the fly without loosing any data?

Thanks,
Gary
