  storage and editing nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2024, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello I've been tasked to set yp a nas for a small production company working on a on going documentary about a multi-artists project. Additionally short single artist based clips will be produced.
The long form doc is transcoded and edited on Avid Media Composer on a local hard drive by a single editor. He'll use the nas exclusively as source storage for footage, not for editing.
The producer would like to have additional editors, working on premiere or davinci, to edit directly on the nas all the additional clips. Those editors will work mostly remotely.
Also ideally the nas will be used by the colourist.
What nas system/config do you think will be best for this workflow? Will it be necessary to upgrade the hardware on the editors computer and on the network the nas will be connected to?
Is it possible to keep the footage safe from deletion by the editors while letting them editing on the nas? How to protect the nas from ransomware?

  Asustor vs Terramaster
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2024, 03:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I currently have a Terramaster F2-210. Its gotten old, new applications are not supported, and want to use more advanced apps and functions not available on this model. I am planning to upgrade my NAS to a newer model, with Intel processors which will allow for new applications and NAS OS systems in it. I was considering the Terramaster F2-424, but have been reading about Asustor AS5402T. Now both are new, capable of a lot more than my current model, slight different in RAM, totally separate OS, but I can't find any comparisons between the two and which one seems better. They are even priced the same, so I could pick any, but I don't know which would suit me best. I am used to the TOS from Terramaster, but trying a new OS won't be too bad as long as they are easy to manage. But would love to hear or read about the operability, functionality, and why one is better, slightly better, or way better than the other one. Maybe OS is the difference, security, app catalog, etc, i don't kno

  New to NASs
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello There,

I'm a noob, like I know enough to get in trouble. I've taken a deep dive into all things NAS in the last 2 months. Is TrueNas too much for me? or should I stick to something like Synology? Im not liking the lack of upgrades in the home user Synology lineup...

Maybe Im selling myself short, I know pretty much all the components of a mother board but... I've never actually installed RAM on a MB before.

I have Plex and a MAC so I'd like to run Time Machine and a growing library of media.

Thanks for all you do!

  Synology RS3413xs configuration
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-02-2024, 01:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello and thank you for your videos. I love these. They help me more than you can think. I have a Synology NAS RS3413xs. It has an Intel Xeon E3-1230 v2 processor. It does not have integrated graphics. I do not have a video card other than the built-in VGA it has. With that being said, I get buffering on my Firestick 4k in my bedroom. I have changed the video quality down to 2mb and that fixes my problem most of the time. But I feel as though this NAS should be able to at least supply decent videos. I have 1 gig network fiber to my house. And I have great Wi-Fi at home. What would you suggest?

  NAs advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-31-2024, 09:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I'm looking for a cost effective NAS that will act as a 4k film server for a media player. The media player is powerful and no transcoding is needed, just the storage of the films on a networked server. I won't be using it for VMs or any other extensive uses, just a plain film server.
I'd like a 4 or 5 bay unit networked with ethernet rather than USB. My current library (on various external HDDs) is around 15TB or so. It seems 8TB is a good price/space region so I will need 4-5 disks for adequate storage. Any particular NAS HDD to go for? Would use RAID 5.
The Synology DS1522+ does tick all the boxes but is expensive and seems overkill for what I need. Terramaster looked less overkill but they seem to do more USB stuff than network. and generally are limited to a 4 bay. Not sure now much RAM I need for 4k streaming. Is 2GB enough? If so, the F4-210(2GB) looked cheap but can't upgrade the RAM. Basically looking for one step up from JBOD!

Thanks for any advice!

BW

Ryan

Reset System Storage Pool Without Deleting Other Storage Pools
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-30-2024, 02:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. I’m using a TVS-472XT w/ a TL-D800S expansion using the most recent version of QuTS Hero. I currently have 3 storage pools: Storage Pool 1 (System Pool): 4 4tb M.2 SSD’s (with an expansion card), Storage Pool 2: 4 8tb Sata SSD’s, and Storage Pool 3: 8 12tb HDD’s. I want to change the System Pool to 2 much smaller M.2 SSD’s and move the 4 4tb M.2 SSD’s to Storage Pool 2 (with an expansion card). Is it possible to do that without losing the data I have on saved Storage Pools 2 and 3 (Storage Pool 3 is a RAID 6 backup of Storage Pool 2)?

BTW, I love your website and YouTube channel. Thank you for all of the great information.

NAS vs DAS, SSD vs HDD
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-29-2024, 07:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Looking to replace an Areca 8050T2 that has 5 bays as a 12Tb raid 5, 2 bays as a backup for the Raid array, and 1 bay for backing up my Mac computer. I will also be upgrading from a 2021 iMac to a new Mac Studio. The Areca is thunderbolt 2 so an older connection with an adapter, and my drives in it are 10 years old, so long overdue for replacement. I am strongly considering using SSD's for speed, reliability, noise, and energy consumption. Not sure whether I should be using a DAS or a NAS. Don't necessarily need networking, but not against it. Just want to bombproof somewhat futureproof setup for the next 10 years. Thanks.

  QNAP vs Synology
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-29-2024, 06:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hey. First of all, love all your youtube videos!!
I am hesitating between the QNAP TS-453E-8G-US and the Synology DiskStation DS923+. Price is about the same on Amazon Canada. My main use would be for photo management (AI sorting, having access on the mobile app too). Also, I would love to store all my documents and open them directly in MS Office for easier modifications if that is possible. I saw your video and the fact the QNAP is locked at 8GB RAM, would that be enough for my use? Later on, I would probablt had a few cameras at my house (nothing extra). I want a good software that won't be slow and with the less noise. What would you suggest? Thanks a lot mate! Smile
