DAS for Windoze |

We need to add external storage to an old Win10P workstation with a free PCIe x4 slot. We have a good number of spare 3TB NAS HDDs and need to connect at least 4 of them to the PC. A NAS would be overkill and too costly. We can use hardware or software RAID, and Windoze Storage Spaces is a candidate. Because we're a public charity, we're flexible and cheap. Still, reliability is #1.

NAS to stream and video library to PLEX |

In 2020 I used the pandemic shutdown as an opportunity to digitize my CD/DVD collection. I purchased a QNAP, 2-Bay (can't remember the model number). I found it really difficult to set up (I'm not the most tech savvy), but once set up, it worked great. A year later my system was attacked and locked. I'm jumping back in to NAS and am gun-shy on QNAP. I have a good home theater system. I run plex through my Samsung TV which is connected to my AV receiver. I would love to hear what you recommend.

Capacity Upgrade |

Hello, I watch your channel all the time when I have NAS questions, so I wanted to start off by saying thank you.
I'm currently running a Synology 1019+ mainly as a PLEX server. Its fully loaded with 5 x 16TB Ironwolf HDDs (It's frustrating that I lose 1.4 TB on each drive just to use them, but thats another topic)
Im at about 80% capacity and I want to upgrade the drives. Synology support says that while I "can" put 5 new 24tb Exos drives in the NAS, they can't verify its reliability and functionality.
Do you have any input or previous dealings with going over manufacture specified drive capacity?
I can always add a DX517 expansion, but would rather upgrade the drive first before expanding. (Unless you recommend differently)
I'd love to get a NAS that had a larger drive bay capacity, but none of the larger Syno's have the Celeron capable of Hardware Transcoding.
Any input you can provide is greatly appreciated, and thank you again for all your informative videos!!!

Brand/Storage Advice |

I'm looking for advice on the best system and an appropriate amount of storage. Primarily, I want to store/back up photos and home videos that are on my home (Windows) computer and be able to access them from other devices (Macs/iPads). There are some additional documents I would like to be able to access from multiple computers. Overall, the current files are about 500 Gb. That will probably double over the next ten years.
Regarding RAID levels, I am more concerned about data loss than uptime (sorry - my terminology is probably all wrong, I hope I'm getting the point across). So I was thinking along the lines of a 4 bay with large capacity drives and a RAID 10 configuration, accepting the added cost and 'wasted' space as a tradeoff for peace of mind that all of the photos are safe.
Budget is not really a huge concern. I'd keep it under $1000 if possible.
Thanks

Need help. My Drobo 5D is done. I used it as a DAS with roughly 14 TB of data, photos and video. And more data added all the time. At the moment I don't have the setup required to look into a NAS array. Any DAS recommendations? Willing to spend up to up to $1000 for the array and obviously additional cost for drives to populate it. I liked the 5 bay array setup for raid parity and redundancy. Please let me know.
Thank you,
Joe

Hi,
I hv QNAP TS-453E. I bought WD 2TB RED Plus (Initially 2 WD20EFPX pieces). Because i had (WD20EFRX) from my previous "WD NAP Cloud". But unfortunately during it's synchronization, one of it started to show some bad blocks on it, and the syncing is taking like ages now.
I already bought 2 new WD20EFPX to replace them. Now the question is, Is it ok if I shutdown my QNAP and replace those 2 WD20EFRX drives with my new WD20EFPX?
Your support will be highly appreciated and I will be very thankful to you
Regards,

Hello!
I’m looking for help on deciding on a Synology solution. I’d like to have a NAS solution for computer backup, media sharing and editing. The hope is to be able to back up at least 6 computers that will be located in different cities around the USA. Considering a RAID 5 or 6 setup and the ability to add another NAS in the year or so to mirror this one. Would also need at least 10 users to connect at a time.

NAS upgrade |

I currently have a Synology DS918+ with 4xWDRedPro 16TB drives installed in RAID 5. I do run MariaDB and Plex (no transcoding) natively on the system and having Jellyfin in a Docker. Currently I have around 8.8TB free on the system, I do have a DX517 available with 5xWDRed+ 4TB drives to increase storage as I am always adding more media releases to the system. I am noticing the system is getting slower.
My quandary is what to upgrade to, while I like how DSM works and how simple it makes things but as everyone knows the HW spec is poor, from the current models I am considering either the DS1821+/DS1823xs+ or DS2422+/DS3622xs+ but I am loathed to buy one at the moment. Would I be better moving away to another brand? I don't have anything with more than 1G NIC wise currently but am considering getting a 2.5G switch.

Buying a NAS (my first NAS) |

Dear Sir, I am on to buy my first NAS and plan to choose between QNAP TS-464, Asustor AS6704T and As5404T (video transcoding is important). Planned usage: storage of family media, movies, synchronization of work-stuff + movie streaming or playback via hdmi port to TV. The NAS will be placed in the living room so noise is a factor! I like the robust construction of the Lockerstor and the display panel, but I am a bit afraid of the larger noise. However, I wonder if less efficient heat dissipation could be an issue in the plastic chassis of Nimbustor. This debate pushes me towards QNAP, however, the soldered 8GB RAM distracts me: my plan is to upgrade the RAM to 16 GB. Final questions: should I be happy with the 8GB RAM and choose QNAP or go for the Nimbustor? Or shall I hope that noise will not disturb watching movies and buy the Lockerstor? Thanks a lot for your advice!
