storage and editing nas

#1
Hello I've been tasked to set yp a nas for a small production company working on a on going documentary about a multi-artists project. Additionally short single artist based clips will be produced.
The long form doc is transcoded and edited on Avid Media Composer on a local hard drive by a single editor. He'll use the nas exclusively as source storage for footage, not for editing.
The producer would like to have additional editors, working on premiere or davinci, to edit directly on the nas all the additional clips. Those editors will work mostly remotely.
Also ideally the nas will be used by the colourist.
What nas system/config do you think will be best for this workflow? Will it be necessary to upgrade the hardware on the editors computer and on the network the nas will be connected to?
Is it possible to keep the footage safe from deletion by the editors while letting them editing on the nas? How to protect the nas from ransomware?

For your production company's needs, I’d recommend a powerful NAS setup that can handle the demands of multiple remote editors, store large amounts of footage, and keep your data secure.

NAS Recommendation:
QNAP TVS-h1288X:

Why It’s a Good Fit: This NAS is powerful and versatile, equipped with an Intel Xeon processor and up to 128GB RAM support. It offers both 10GbE connectivity and Thunderbolt 3, making it perfect for high-speed data access required by editors working with 4K footage.
Storage: With 12 bays, you can easily set up 60-70TB of storage using large-capacity drives in a RAID 6 configuration for redundancy and data protection.
Synology DS3622xs+:

Why It’s a Good Fit: Synology's DS3622xs+ is also a great option with similar capabilities, including high RAM capacity and multiple expansion slots for network upgrades. Synology’s DSM software is user-friendly, which could be a plus for managing multiple users and access controls.
Storage: This model supports 12 bays, allowing you to set up 60-70TB in RAID 6, providing both ample storage and data security.
Network and Hardware Upgrades:
Network: Upgrade to a 10GbE network to ensure fast data transfer speeds, which are essential for video editing directly from the NAS. Consider a 10GbE switch and upgrading network cards on the editors' computers to support 10GbE.
Editors' Computers: Ensure they have SSDs for caching and sufficient RAM to handle large video files, especially if editing high-resolution footage.
Data Protection:
User Permissions: Set up user accounts with specific permissions to restrict deletion capabilities. Use Synology or QNAP’s built-in access controls to manage these permissions.
Ransomware Protection: Regularly back up the NAS to an external location or cloud. Both Synology and QNAP offer snapshot and versioning features to recover from ransomware attacks.
This setup should provide robust storage and editing capabilities, ensuring your footage is safe and easily accessible to your team.
