new hard drive |

Hello, I have been running at home a synology DS918+ for several years already, but I need more space and I want to replace the 4 drives in it before they start giving problems. My question is, which new drives would you recommend me to buy for home use? I need each drive to be 18-20TB at least, and I would like them to be quiet. Money budget should not be an issue and I do not need the best performance. Thank you very much for your advice.

Hi mate,
I'd like to build a home NAS. I followed your guide on DIY NAS with Jonsbo N2 and ended up modifying some components due to price and availability.
Just want to know what's your opinion about my system and if it's future proof?
Case: Jonsbo N2
MB: ASROCK Z690M-ITX/AX (2x M.2 and 2 LAN ports 1G+2.5G). it also support overclocking
CPU: i5-12400F + original fan
RAM: 16-32GB
PSU: SFX 400W
OS: TrueNAS on M.2 NVMe SSD (256GB?)
Regards,
Kourosh

NAS for 4k Video Editing and Storage... |

I spoke to a rep at QNap and he recommended the TS-855X for Storing and editing 4k video from Lumix S5 and Black Magic Cameras. Much of my video will be 1080, 10 bit as well from the Black Magic ATEM Extreme ISO.
Also being considered is the QNAP TS-h973AX-32G 9-Bay QuTS Hero NAS with 10GbE/2.5GbE. Alex Pettitt of the UK is using this model with success.
Not sure about the Asustor Models.
Your thoughts?
Thank you in advance!

I just bought a terramaster f4 423 and I want to put a RAM chip in it but I’m unsure what is compatible. Their site recommends only their RAM and it costs way too much. Would you know one that works? I am looking to put 16Gb. Thank you in advance for any recommendations you can provide

I have a PC that I have built and am currently using as a Plex server. I would like to expand to a NAS to be able to back up files on my various Mac devices. There may be a way to do this now but I don't know how to do it.
Thanks so much for your help! I really enjoy your channel.

Hello, looking for recommendations for the following wish list noy all inclusive. This will be used for family storage, editing (Photos and Videos), remote access and video streaming. One member is leaning towards Synology, but I am not personally sold on that direction.
Wish list:
A printer can be attached
4 core w integrated graphics
Expandable Memory
network adapter upgrade port for 10Gbe
M.2 drive bays (2)
GbE LAN port (Supports Link Aggregation / Failover
Gen 3 PCIe lane system
Supports Plex
HDMI port would be nice.
What would you recommend? I have been lurking for years on your website and find the information and presentations very informative.
Thanks for any input,
Ross

Drobo 5N replacement |

Hi,
My Drobo 5N (5x 6Tb) is finally starting to die and I need to replace it; so, I'm looking for advice on the replacement.
I've had no issues with my 5N and if Drobo was still in business I would have just bought a new 5N2.
While I'm a competent Linux admin so don't mind having to take a new NAS and install another OS (OMV, TrueNAS, etc.), I don't want to have a system I have to babysit a lot, I just need something that works.
So my requirements in a nutshell:
- Small footprint
- Low power
- Quiet
- After initial set-up, it just works
- 5 or 6 bays
- Ability to mix and match drives upgrading one at a time (similar to Drobo's BeyondRAID - I upgraded from 4Tbs to 6Tbs)
- Reasonable cost
At the moment my research has led me to the Terramaster T6-423, possibly installing TrueNas or OMV but I'd like to get your thoughts as to what would be the best NAS for me.
Thanks.

Hi
I have a QNAP TVS-h1288X and am having trouble connecting Macs to it. We have been using this NAS for the last few years and with very few issues but we have recently moved to a new office, updated the macs and we are now having trouble connecting to it, despite brand new cabling and in theory no new setup
It originally had a IP address of 169.254.143.171 and having done quite a lot of research. I have changed the IP to 192.168.1.100 to avoid clashes with the other network we run in the office for the internet. Still we are unable to locate the NAS on macs but can on PCs. Any help would be appreciated as as we update macs out of necessity we are losing connectivity without any clear reason why.
We run 2 separate networks in the office so that the NAS doesn't have to be directly connected to the internet and so that not every guest who comes into our office and logs on to our wifi has access.
Any help would be really appreciated
Thanks
Luke

Connecting NAS Directly in Linux |

An Excellent, and detailed, blog on how to directly connect an Asustor NAS in Windows, My question is how to do it in Linux (I am using the Manjaro distro with Nemo as the file manager), connecting via router and browser, and even via Nemo using the browser connection url, is no problem, but need the 2.5Gb speed offered by the NAS (Lockerstor 6 2nd Gen). I have a Realtek 8125 2.5Gb Lan built in to the PC motherboard and a QNAP PCIE card with an Intel I225-LM 2.5Gb.
I would like to know the following, if possible;
1. Single 2.5Gb to Single 2.5Gb direct PC to NAS
2. 2 x 2.5gb to 2 x 2.5Gb direct PC to NAS (either operating singularly or as "Link Aggregated" )
3. as No 2 but via Netgear MS108EUP 2.5Gb Switch (either operating singularly or as "Link Aggregated" )
Whilst either a direct answer or a blog tutorial would be great, a video tutorial would be excellent for all Linux Newbies.
Regards
Steve Wrack
