Based on the out of reach prices of Synology NAS, I found a DS1513+. from a small business. Is it worth it today functionality wise.

The unit is shipping in the US, and the latest OS allows for IP tunneling over USB4, so I think this is a good solution for my Mac Studio and video editing.

But I haven't seen benchmarks for IP Tunneling with NVMe SSD read/write caching.

I was thinking of a four or six bay unit with Ironwolf Pro 24Mb drives.

What I don't know is what brand of NVMe SSD memory to add and what quantity/size? What is the sweet spot?  They would need to be very durable for lots of read/writes, and too large a cache might not be helpful.

Also will I need additional DDR5 ECC RAM, and if so is there an alternative to the Asustor RAM which seems overpriced?

I would like to buy the QNAP TBS-464 but I don't know wich SSD to buy.
I need Gen 3 x 2 because the NAS don't support more.
I would like to buy 1To for each and like that I should have 3To in RAID 5.
It's for Home use (Documents and Family picture).
Samsung ? WD ? Crucial ?
What reference ?
And why Synology don't make NVME NAS in 2024 ???

Hi, I'm hesitating between buying the Ugreen DXP4800 or the DXP 4800 plus.
I mainly want it to view my photos and videos on my TV, share them with family remotely, and maybe create a Drive.
Which of these two NAS models would be more suitable? How do they compare in terms of power consumption and performance?

I'm planning my first NAS/Home Lab Server for cybersecurity projects/testing/learning. I would love a gut check to see if I'm on the right track. I've settled on the Terramaste​r F6-424 M​ax with 2 to 4 HDD to start. I'm also thinking an NVME drive to run and store programs on that I run in Docker, running VMs, etc. I'm aiming to use Proxmox rather than the default OS on the Terramaster. Im looking for a good NAS option to upgrade to from my Synology DS418.
My main criteria:
• Rack-mountable. Either a half-depth rack-mount case or a desktop case I can put on a rack shelf
• A device that runs reliably for the next 10–15 years with minimum intervention.
• Min 8 drives and space to expand in the future – for large file storage
• Ability to repair/upgrade the NAS in the future.
I am happy to go either turnkey or DIY, but have been investigating the DIY given the want for repairability / upgradability. Case wise was thinking about either Sliger CX3702 or SilverStone CS382. The Icy Dock ToughArmor 8x2.5” to 5.25 caddie looks awesome for future proofing! Thinking about a HBA or m.2 to Sata for extra I/O.
Im struggling to find good options for matx mobo/cpu. I found the SuperMicro X13SCL-F but its not cheap and neither is ECC DDR5. Happy spend a little more if it gives me the years of service.
I would love any thoughts/recommendations.

After much research on nascompares.com, I have finally settled on the Terramaster F4-424. The NAS will be used for backups (Mac & PC), multimedia (Plex), file storage (both general and video editing), and possibly VM/Docker usage in the future. I plan to initially install two 12Gb drives and some M.2 NVME drives.

1. Which would yield better performance: two M.2 drives for caching or one for the OS and one for caching?
2. What would be the recommended drives (brand and size) for the two slots?
3. I realize that the M.2 for OS storage would need to be installed initially, but does the M.2 for caching need to be installed at the time of initial setup also?

Just got a F6-424 and was wondering if there is a optimal NVMe M.2 SSD size to use for both slots?
I’m thinking I will use the SSDs for buffering.

I have a Synology DS920+ with 2x 2TB Ironwolf (not Pro) and SHR (with immutable snapshots).

Since my movies and tv shows are growing a lot, i'm considering on buying one more HDD but i don't know if i should go with another 8TB/10TB/12TB IronWolf or WD Red Plus.


I use the NAS for:

- sync between my pc and Synology with Drive, and between my smartphone and Synology using FolderSync Pro.
- Synology Photos (4 users).
- Store and stream music using Navidrome on Container Manager (at home and out).
- Store and stream my movies (some can be large). At the moment i have Plex (which i'm almost decided to stop using), Emby (not Premiere), and Jellyfin (i like it but it's just a "backup" for Emby). Emby and Jellyfin are also on Container Manager (to use at home and out)
- Surveillance Station with 2 cameras
- Hyperbackup to an external HDD

Hey! I really appreciate the option to ask for advice. Our use case is a bit unique, so I'm having a hard time getting input on this.

Our business is creating a new backup solution. One of the big hurdles is that the owners require a full backup of our systems be taken off site daily. This must be on physical hardware. Currently we take an LTO7 tape offsite every day, but backing up directly to tape is becoming too slow to take a full copy every 24 hours.

I'm thinking of changing our backup software from an older version of Backup Exec to Veeam, installing a 1U storage server for backups to head first, and then I'd replicate that storage to a portable NAS device daily and tape weekly/monthly.

Money isn't a consideration currently. Just trying to figure out some options.
Any input is greatly appreciated!
