Based on the out of reach prices of Synology NAS, I found a DS1513+. from a small business. Is it worth it today functionality wise.
Thank you for your time and great work.

Welcome to the world of NAS! The Synology DS1513+ is an older model, but it can still be a decent choice for home use, especially if you can get it at a good price like 500 CAD. Here are some points to consider:
Pros:
Storage Capacity: With five drive bays, it offers good expandability for your 8TB needs, especially if you plan to use RAID for redundancy.
Functionality: It supports Synology's DSM, which is user-friendly and packed with features for file sharing, backups, and multimedia applications.
Community Support: Being a well-known model, you’ll find a lot of resources, guides, and community support online.
Cons:
Performance: Being older, its hardware (CPU and RAM) might struggle with more intensive tasks, such as 4K video transcoding or running multiple VMs.
Software Updates: Synology may eventually phase out software support for older models, meaning you might miss out on the latest features and security updates.
Conclusion:
If your use case revolves around file storage, sharing, and basic media streaming, the DS1513+ can still serve you well. However, if you plan on using more demanding applications in the future, you might want to consider saving up for a newer model.
