Asustor AS6704T and NVMe M.2 SSDs
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-16-2024, 08:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi

I am thinking of purchasing 4x Western Digital Red SN700 -WDS100T1R0C SSDs for my Asustor AS6704T.

What is your opinion on the choice of using the WDS100T1R0C NVMe drives in an Asustor AS6704T?

Should I use heat sinks, even though the Asustor does not specify that you require heat sinks for the WDS100T1R0C?

If you do recommend using a heat sinks with the WDS100T1R0C, which brand and model number of het sink do you recommend using with the AS6704T and WDS100T1R0C SDDs

  Synology DS423+ drives
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-16-2024, 02:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I've been viewing your NAScompares Youtube videos (which are very good btw) and decided to buy a DS423+ NAS enclosure. My problem is finding Toshiba or Seagate 12TB compatible drives. The compatible drives on the Synology website are old and not available or the sub-type model number is not listed on various websites (for example the compatible Seagate drive is model# ST12000VN0008 - 2YS101 - only the ST12000VN0008 model is listed on websites but not the subtype model number which I believe refers to the drive firmware. Can I substitute any ST12000VN0008 model for use in the DS423+?

The Synology drives are much more expensive than thrid party and out of my price range. Alternatively, the Terramaster F4-424 was on my enclosure list but as this is my first NAS (and I am not an IT technical person), I thought the Synology sw would be a better solution for me.

Appreciate any guidance on this.

  Plex NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-15-2024, 11:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I need a NAS that can support a moderate-sized 4k video library and 1TB max. storage for a sole-proprietor business. I'm a novice, so it should be very user-friendly. I've read your articles, watched your videos and used the NAS builder, but I still can't figure out what is best for me.

MUST HAVE: HDMI 4k/60fps; min. 2.5GBe internet; not too noisy

WOULD BE NICE: 10GBe internet, either built-in or via PCIe; horizontal form factor to incorporate into home theater, like QNAP TBS-464, Asustor Flashstor 6/12, Lincplus Lincstation N1, etc.

Thank you so much

  Storage expansion (enclosure) options
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-15-2024, 06:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have a Intel NUC that I'm using as an Unraid server. I have several 2,5" SSD's and several M.2 drives that I would like to add to the NUC. I'm looking for a good way to add several disks, without having to put every disk in it's own enclosure. There are options like the Qnap TR-004, but these are all for 3,5" drives. Any good option available to combine multiple 2,5" drives, or M.2 drives and add to Unrtaid? Thanks in advance!

Best NAS build 2024 (New to NAS)
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-15-2024, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hi,

Firstly i have to say you are really great in explaining and comparing NAS setups. I have been watching a lot of your videos and for someone with medium knowledge of PC building i learned a lot about NAS setups from your videos. I saw your review of the Jonsbo N5, and although its not out yet, it made me think about a potential setup. Using the N5 as a base for a NAS build, i wanted to ask you:

- What motherboard would you choose to go with this case? Could be great if it has EEC memory options, Quicksync, Strong CPU, Power efficient, NVM support, and enough PCIE options
- What processor would you recommend with that board
- And in case i want maximum cooling and as quiet as possible, what cooling would you add to this case?

Oh and one last question, in case setting up a BIOS for this build is something a bit too advanced for me, is there a chance i can get help with this, i dont mind paying for it.

Thank you very much in advance, you rock!

All the best,
Vincent van Bentem

  NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-15-2024, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Purpose:
- Business use and highest level of encryption for customer data
- VM usage for many services which will be running for a small business level of people
- 4k or 8k content media services
- 10gbe (either built in or expandable)
- quiet system in terms of noise preferably something that can be placed on the floor or a desk. No a racked server. So portable.
-Supports 32gb ddr4 with ecc for reliability
- for now would need to support up to 20tb but expandable later

Apart from the NAS itself, and in terms of the most dependable and reliable storage drives for this unit what would you recommend without going to crazy for the budget of say 500 per drive.

  NAS with Byeond Raid technology
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-14-2024, 04:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

I recently learned of Drobo's demise, The best thing about the ecosystem was there "Byeond Raid" technology.
What alternatives are avalible with simmilar implementations? I dont wish to bulk upgrade my drives when it becomes full, I want a system that grows as my needs do.

Is there a simmilar product avalible with this kind of technology?

  Terramaster F4-424 vs ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-14-2024, 02:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I want to update my home storage from JBOD 2-bay enclosure, 102 ReadyNAS, & external G-RAID

So that I have a 4-bay NAS with the ability to segment configuration into 2 groups with 2-hdds, expand
storage with NVMe, and use differnt size drives.

My use is for storage of media (i.e. photos, video), files local & cloud, and backups for linux and MacOS.

The NAS would be connected to switch that supports 2.5G.

I'm leaning to the Terramaster F4-424, due to the CPU, 2.5G ports, multiple hdd support, NVMe slots, and TRaid.

I have a linux server that runs plex using media stored on NAS, therefore I don't use NAS as a service host.

My question is the F4-424 a good selection for a approximate 5yr use or is there another NAS you would recommend?

Cheers,
Marc

Want to buy media server. Looking at Synology 2 bay da223 or Equivalent?
Posted by: Enquiries - 07-13-2024, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Is the Synology 2-bay DS223 capable of running this?

What device would you recommend that I could purchase for under $300, and what hard drive would you suggest?

I need something that I can configure fairly easily. I have a low understanding of building this device, so I'm just trying to get something up and running.

Also, I am using a ClonerAlliance device to record streaming shows. Will I be able to put them on the NAS device, and will Plex recognize them, or will I have to treat them like a home movie? Can I do that?

I really don't want to get into recording movies off my computer, so I'm hoping the ClonerAlliance will work.

Lots of questions, appreciate any help you can give.
