Device to be used as Apple Time Machine & backup for Windows PC. Ablility to back up our Android phones a plus. Want 2 LAN ports (one for each computer) & wireless connectivity for backing up NAS to One Drive. Also want to be able to use as a plex server (both on local wifi & remotely). Want to run RAID 1, 5, 6 or 10 and want it to be upgradable.

Hi there,
I've seen your youtube channel and your website and I'm very impressed by your thoroughness. I don't work directly with servers in any capacity and am learning as I go here.
I currently have a Plex Home Server with 5Terabyte Hard Drive I maxed out today. I've been adding to this server nonstop through manual DVD rips over the past 2 years. I need to level up and I'm hoping to take advantage of some black friday deals. I would love a simple recommendation of a NAS that would be appropriate for the next 10 years. Thoughts on what that might look like?
Thank you!
Luke

I want to setup a NAS which needs to run minimum 4 VM's on it. Graphics is not so important. Maybe a bit of 4k playing of videos might be setup on it as well for some video playback
Disks will be 3,5 Inch SATA III - minimal 4
I want to verify and have some advice on Case, the Motherboard (micro-ATX), CPU and Memory.
I look for DDR5-ECC 128GB (4x 32GB)
1 or 2 M.2 drives is nice for caching read and write or maybe putting them in mirror mode and run 2 VM's from them
Nas fileshares will be SMB and NFS, no iSCSI as it sucks when a connection fails. NFS will just continue when connections restore
Case: silverstone-cs382
Motherboard: asrock-b650m-pro-rs
CPU: amd-ryzen-7-9700x-boxed
Memory: Kingston KSM52E42BD8KM-32HA
Ant tips?
Thanks,
Frans

Hello,
thank you for all the videos and comparisons, they helped me a lot to drill down my options.
However, I'm still a bit uncertain with the final decision.
I'm looking for a Synology NAS, as Active Backup and BTRFS are key factors here.
The NAS is intended for backing up Windows, macOS and a couple of linux servers, as well as pulling in data from Google Drive/Photos.
There is a small amount of videos but nothing that requires transcoding and I'm not intending to use Plex.
I already have about 4TB of existing data and 4 Seagate Ironwolf 4TB drives from a pevious NAS project.
For connectivity the connecting devices support 2.5G and I'm considering adding a non-managed 2.5G switch to my network.
I want to keep the option to host a few services locally, but not extensively.
I'm currently looking at the 923+ or the 1522+. Especially the latter for the additional RAM and network ports as well as more headroom for future disk (maybe even ssd) additions.
Best regards and thanks

Hey Robbie and Eddie
Your YouTube channel is amazing (as I have commented several times)!
Recently, you did a video on QNAP/Synology use of WORM.
I have a Synology DS918+ NAS as primary, and RSYNC back up to an offsite QNAP TVS-1582 NAS.
Currently, I make 2 sets of backups, one is a SYNC of my Synology data (so single copy), and the other is Multiple versions, to be able to roll back the data.
I would like to setup the backup in such a way that my QNAP backup becomes WORM, but not sure how to set this up.
This may be a good Video idea to show others also (whether it's the same setup - S to Q, or S to S, or Q to Q).
Cheers
D

I purchased a Synology DS923 and 2 Ironwolf Pro 20TB Hard drives. The hard drives are very noisy. (it kinda sounds like small animals are moving furniture). I was thinking that I should swap these hard drives for 2 - 12 TB. Do I have any other options? Can use the 20TB hard drives in the NAS and have them not run all the time?
Also... I really like your YouTube channel and living in Seattle, I can relate to your dislike seagulls

| Switch from SHR-1 to JBOD for more storage |

I have a DS220+ with 2 4TB hard drives on SHR-1 used for document storage and PMS with all the Sonarr, Radarr, etc. automation. I'm starting to run low on storage, most of which is just TV and movies.
I already have a 3-2-1 backup setup, and I don't feel like I need 100% uptime for business purposes so I'd like to switch from SHR-1 to JBOD to increase storage capacity.
Would doing the following work?
1. Pull one of the drives from my NAS so it degrades the volume
2. Connect that drive elsewhere and format it
3. Connect that drive via USB to my NAS, copy all the existing data in the storage volume to the externally connected drive
4. Delete the existing storage volume on the NAS (will DSM allow this while the volume is degraded or would I need to factory reset the whole thing?)
5. Create a new JBOD storage volume
6. Re-insert the drive I pulled at the beginning that now has the copied data
Aside from purchasing larger drives, is there a better approach to make this change?
Thanks!

What do you recommend for 2-bay NAS (Raid 1 config) to be used for home file sharing and backup, music and home-video playing? No website serving or business uses. Also must be able to run automatic backup to external USB-connected 8TB HD (i.e., backup in case NAS controller failure). Want software easy to use/understand for first-time NAS user. Thanks!

Hi,
I'm looking for a NAS device for home use (storage for movies and files). Primarily, it should have support for 2 bays only for two Seagate IronWolf Pro ST24000NT002 24TB drives. I want both RAID 0 and RAID 1 capabilities. It's important to me to connect to the NAS from my computer, smartphones, and TV, with access through an app from anywhere I am. HDMI for connecting directly to the TV would be a plus. I’d like fast transfer speeds for writing and saving (>200MB/s). I need a USB connection between the NAS and PC to quickly transfer files. Is there a NAS that meets these requirements?
(Of course, if you support me with advice, I’ll support you with a donation.)
