  NAS Upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-06-2024, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I have 2 Syn 1511 and a Drobo 5d3 with the two synologies as backup devices to the Drobo. The Drobo is running out of capacity and I am loathed to invest in more storage as it’s unsupported.

I want to upgrade the main storage but unsure what is best despite watching your YouTube’s.

I am thinking Synology 1522 rather than 1821, probably with 16TB drives (trying to find a sweet spot and discount window). Probably WD Red Pro although these are not supported by Synology (should I look at Iron Wolf, Tosh N300 or even the Syn 3310 plus - is that equiv to WD Red Plus though)

I haven’t looked at QNAP as I know Synology and I am a little concerned moving back from DAS to NAS but that will share better between the desktop and Laptop.

Any recommendations, am I on the right lines.

  configuring my qnap ts-264
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2024, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am very newbie and trying to setup my personal server. I am still figuring out how to use this for my use. My first main use is to host my django project that is accessible through my domain (only for my family members). My databases are mix of video, image and numerical data. I would also like to run jellyfin and Nextcloud on it. I cannot do qtier since i do raid 1 with hdd and at this point due to budget limitations i only have one ssd. So i have to use ssd as cache so i have a loop with both hdd and ssd as cache. I built 3 storage volumes one for each and one is encrypted (all thick, is that good?). Is there anyway to make nextcloud work (i cannot make it work) also is it ok if i place like container app in one of the volumes and use it in other volumes as well?

  SSD Nas with VM support
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-05-2024, 05:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Im looking for a NAS which is powerful enough to run 2 or 3 VM's.
Im familiar with ESXi although that is not required.
Probably need around 64GB RAM with a 3Ghz processor
I don't think I need that many cores, prefer faster low-thread count processors
Need SFP25 connectivity
Prefer hardware Raid-6 with at least 8 enterprise SSDs. I don't trust ZFS to save RAM in a power fail or HW restart condition.
Main use-case is for shared storage across several users with home directories mounted upon login.
VPN support optional, not required.

  Synology DS923+ Config Help
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2024, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, and thank you in advance for your help.

I recently purchased a DS923+ with x2 16TB IronWolf Pro drives ($250 USD each) for raid redundancy.
After watching one of your videos where you mentioned triple tiered storage, I'm debating this setup.
I'm hoping you can offer some advice and how this would work.
Can I use non-synology drives (HDD/SSD/NVMe)?
Would/should they all be pooled together?
Any other knowledge you can share on creating the best NAS setup with the hardware I have. If necessary, I can return one or both drives.

Thank you again for the help.

Kind regards,
Andrzej

  Suggestion for NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2024, 03:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I have been looking for a NAS that also can act as both a NAS and a home server for some time.

I am more interested in hardware than software, so synology is not the best option.
It should be able to take some VM's and contains.
My biggest problem is the shipping as I live in Denmark, and amazon has a minimum 100$ shipping fee.
I have no problem with tinkering, or anything like that.

So thanks for your help and time Big Grin

External backup Ez Sync files from Asustor
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-03-2024, 01:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi

I recently bought a new ASustor 5404t NAS. i did the Ez Sync between my computer and NAS. now i want to backup my NAS to external NAS but like other shared folders Ezsync folder is not visible to select in Back up and restore.

Also, when i used Readynas i had ready cloud but, i was still able to connect my Samsung Galacy through myfiles. when i tried to configure Asustor it displays SMB2/SMB3 but when i enter credentials it says SM2/3 might not be turned on i check NAS SMB is enabled so not sure.

Thanks

Raghav

  Replacing QNAP NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2024, 07:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,
I would like to ask your opinion to replace an old QNAP TS-859.
I got quite a lot of photos, movies, music that keeps growing.
I wanted something good enough to handle the backups of 3 laptops, some sync/Time Machine, be able to stream, using it as external drive for some hungry space video apps. Also start using VM on the NAS. Optional, but want to go for the QuTS Hero OS.
Having a HDMI is also a good plus, but not a deal breaker.
Wanting to keep on QNAP, but up for other options.
Saw the QNAP TS-673A, It will need some upgrades, biggest down, its that is an old model (over 3 year).
Also checked QNAP TVS h674, quite expensive, overkill, but future proof and no upgrades. Finally the Asustor Lockerstor 6 Gen 2, needs some upgrades, but don't know the brand.
Discarded Qnap TS-664 because you cant upgrade RAM.
Above all, want something reliable and with long time spam to next buy.
Thank you

UGreen DXP8800 Plus Ways To Access External HDD With Plex
Posted by: Octavean - 08-02-2024, 06:02 PM - Forum: Existing NAS users - Replies (4)

So, I have a UGreen DXP8800 Plus NAS and have chosen to use the UGOS Pro OS.  Why? Gluten for punishment one would think.  Anyway, UGOS doesn’t allow a USB drive (or Thunderbolt drive) to be accessed in the same way most other NAS manufacturers typically do.  Such external drives are accessible from within UGOS but not discoverable on the Network.

I was reading an article and watching some videos on how to export, backup and edit docker containers.  Then an idea struck.

On to the question:

Since the UGOS interface  doesn’t provide a way for Plex in a docker container to access external HDDs (say a 5 bay or 8 bay DAS), maybe there is a manual way.

Perhaps one could:

1) Export the known UGOS working Plex container.

2) Connect the USB or Thunderbolt DAS containing multiple HDDs (JBOD / RAID)

3) SSH into the UGreen NAS and use Linux commands (bugger, I don’t know any) to discover all internal and all external drives attached to the NAS.

4) Edit the Plex docker container to provide paths to the external drive

5) Use the new manually edited container which will now hopefully allow Plex to see these external drives.

That’s the plan anyway.  I question if I can even attempt it because I have to look up the commands and am totally new to this.

Anyone one have any suggestions on this?

Much appreciated.

  Photo and Movie Archive
Posted by: Enquiries - 08-02-2024, 03:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi, I have a 30 TB of movies and photos. Now I am using two external WD hard drives for these media.

My problem is I want to store it on one hard drive but also want to backup (not a zip or other formats, just as original) so if something happen, I can use backup drive. I also have to say that my archive is going bigger every year so I need a solution which will be helpful for future.
