  NAS for home/small business
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-02-2024, 02:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi NAS Experts,
To begin with, I would like to say that I appreciate your work that you put in recognizing storage solutions available on the market.

I run a one-person business from home. I have 2 servers (not rack) with proxmox installed. I would like to purchase a file server that would allow me to move the machines to it and benefit from them via LAN on both servers (shared storage, vmotion, etc.).
I've looked at a lot of your videos (and not only yours) and I don't know what to decide on.

What I have:
- proxmox servers with nvme/SSD drives
- 1G/2.5G network appliances expandable to 10G.

What I need:
- a fast iSCSI/NFS volume - a reliable device that will allow running virtual machines (preferably it should support NVME disks)
- a large iSCSI/NFS volume - data storage.
- network ports min. 2x 2.5Gbps

I don't care about any additional functionality beyond network resources.

Thank you in advance and best regards to your team.

Posted by: Enquiries - 02-02-2024, 11:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

We have NAS TS-431P device with 2 HDD (WD Red 2 TB). We want to expand the capacity by adding two more HDDs of 8TB each.
What is the recommended way to install the additional two HDDs.
Thank you.

  UGREEN NASync Series

Hello NAS Compares,

What do you guys think about UGREEN releasing a new NAS? And what are your thoughts on them releasing on Kickstarter? Storaxa Kickstarter causing some problems for 5K users. Do you think it is a good idea for UGREEN to release on Kickstarter?

Do you feel like UGREEN is an established company that will honor its prices and stand behind its new line of NAS devices? And something that will be delivered to the masses?

  Transcoding Not Required ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-01-2024, 06:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

HI
I stream over my home network MKV and MP4 moves and TV shows in Plex both in H264/265 to my Apple TV 4k and onto my year old Sony 4K OLED. No issues with file compatibility. I do not play Plex anywhere else. I only use my NAS for Plex and Photo storage

Do I actually need to be concerned about transcoding ? As I dont think I am transcoding at all at the moment.
I ask because when I update my Terramaster 423 at some stage do I need to only consider NAS systems with built in graphics or can I look at NAS boxes with decent CPU. like the new Synology Ryzen CPUs ?

It opens the choices much wider if I dont have to buy ones with the GPU built in

  Second 8- bay nas
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-01-2024, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have 8 new 16TB HDD for a second 8 bay nas.
i have already an 1821+ in function.

I want a second 8 Bay
Should i buy an other 1821+ or is there an "1824+" to come to the market?
Now buying a 1821+ shortens the overall support i suppose. You know what ik mean

Our internet went out yesterday which our NAS is connected to. The NAS now will not turn on. The tech thinks the whole thing got fried because the power source was bad and the tech from our internet provider had to replace the power source for the modem for it to come back up and run. We have tried to replace the power cord for the NAS which was unsuccessful. Also the drive the NAS is on says its deleted from my computer. We need help figuring out what to do. Or if you have a technician we can call and get this back up and running.

  Connecting NAS via Starlink
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-01-2024, 01:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Do you have any idea how I can get my NAS set up with a Starlink Wi-Fi? We had to move house and moved off BT and will have our NAS kept at my son-in-law’s home which is remote, off-grid and runs Wi-Fi on Starlink. We have the adapter, but how to configure? Thanks for any help you can supply.

  DIY NAS build
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-31-2024, 08:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Just found this awesome request form and wanted to reach out as I am on the search for a DIY NAS.

I want to give Unraid a try and would look for something like this:
- Backup (was thinking about a parity of 18TB and smaller Drives as array)
- Running a plex media server which has at max 2 connections (probably only one at a time for now). Maybe there is transcoding needed here and there, but not regularly
- Having various docker containers (pihole, vpn, paperless ngx, etc.)
- Having a gameserver running , which can be paused when not used
- VMs are not interesteing to me currently, but may would try to play around with them
- Power consumption should be low
- My Network has Cat 7A cables

My biggest trouble is the case and the motherboard/CPU, as I dont have any idea about the performance of them in a server. How much can a modern CPU (also a Celereon CPU like the N5105) take in terms of docker containers/media streaming?

I am really greatful for every response - thanks in advance!
