Ram upgrade and SSD upgrade - Enquiries - 12-08-2024
Current setup:
- Qnap Nas model: TS-262-4G-US
- Seagate 12TB IronWolf 3.5" Internal NAS Drive (2) for a total of 24 tb
- 1gb router and 1 gb internet up/down
I have 1 problem and a new goal.
Problem: My wife and I are trying to play our backed up media videos using the Andriod QuMagie app but there are always buffer interruptions in the playback. We both have brand new Pixel 9 phones so hardware should not be an issue. Why would we be having issues?
New goal: Use my NAS to store video editing files that I am editing using Davinci Resolve 19. I assume I need some kind of m2 SSD for this (I say m2 because I only have a 2 bay so I have no more room for anything else). I watched your video on most of these being overkill and not getting the full speed out of them so I am wondering which m2 you would recommend?
I want to add some ram and am wondering if you suggest just getting another 4gb stick or going to 8gb x2 for 16. Also, which SO-DIMMs do you recommend that are compatible?

Thanks for sharing your setup! Upgrading the NAS with more RAM and an M.2 SSD will definitely make it a bit faster overall, but it likely won’t resolve the buffering issue you’re seeing with the QuMagie app. The root cause is probably the video files being too heavy or incompatible with your Pixel 9 phones, which forces the NAS to transcode them on the fly—something the TS-262 can struggle with.
Here’s what I recommend:
Check Video Formats: Ensure the videos are in a phone-friendly format like H.264 or HEVC. If not, you’ll need to convert them to a compatible format first.
Try the Plex App: Plex has a much better transcoder than QuMagie and is specifically optimized for media streaming. It’s not free, but it could eliminate your buffering issues. If the videos are still being transcoded, Plex will at least handle it more efficiently.
Direct Play/Stream: If your video files are already in the correct format, both QuMagie and Plex can Direct Play them without transcoding, which should eliminate buffering altogether.
Upgrading RAM or adding an SSD cache won’t directly fix this issue, but if you’re also using the NAS for video editing, those upgrades will help in that area.
