Just received the Asustor Flashstor Gen 2 and installed 64GB of ECC ram. The system only shows 32GB after booting and I also see a person that wrote to Redit and had the same problem in Australia. Did you happen to fully populate the memory? Also I'm not happy with the power connection. I moved the NAS to the side to check ports while initializing and it crashed.

I have a TS 469 Pro II which is pretty old now, I've slightly fallen out of love with it and can't seem to get the WAN access sorted, have upgraded to MAc M4 Pro. Thinking of loading with all SSDs so it is silent and cheaper to run. Might do som virtualisation on it but need to learn. WHat SSDs should I buy, what RAM upgrade should I get and what would you recommend. Can you get thunderbolt PCI expansion card for this NAS now?

Hyper Backup to USB external HDD issue |

Hello,
So I had a heck of a scare about an hour ago when I looked at my Nas during a backup process and I saw 3 out of 4 drives had a solid orange light.
My question right now has to do with a change I made the other day. Is there any reason to believe that hyper Backup would take significantly longer to backup to an HDD formated in exFat than if it were formated in ext4?
I'll try to keep this short but no promises. I watched spacerex a few days ago and he said to use exFat if you want to access your files on a windows PC (if the Nas completely fails I assume). So I moved my hbk file and reformatted the external HDD to exFat. Learned that the backup will fail the task if you try to relink the old file from the previous format(ext4).
So I started a completely new backup task and it seemed to work. My first attempt copied way more than I intended, my fault, I don't know. I deleted that and checked my settings and started again. About 7 hours later, I looked at my Nas hoping it was done and that is when I saw the 3 orange lights on the hard drive LEDs.
I just about died because I thought I had wiped the old ext4 backup so I thought I lost everything. I couldn't get logged in and it said login time out and another time it said check your network connection. I finally was able to login after about 30+ minutes of trying. Everything looked like it was still working and I could see my files. No error notification on any channel. I checked again shortly after and the 3 lights returned to blinking green.
The transfer rate dipped down below 1MB/s so I was shocked at how long it was taking. Previously I did a backup with the ext4 format and took about 4hrs 45min for 280GB, but right now with the exFat format I'm only at 253GB in 9hrs.
My temperatures seem to be ok. 36c on 3 of them and 40c on the other. I went ahead and adjusted my fan settings from cool mode to full mode and it has brought the temps down a few degrees so I'm just going to leave it like that, at least until this process finishes.
I'm definitely running an extended s.m.a.r.t. test on my drives as soon as possible.
Is there any reason the 3 lights turned orange for awhile but everything seems to be operating normally? I'm sure there are some things I forgot to mention that might be helpful but I will be glad to answer any questions you guys have.
Thanks for the help
Btw, I did recopy my original backup file on to the external HDD before I started the new backup task, so…I wouldn't have lost almost anything important anyways.

Hello, I'm looking for help with an official NAS purchase and open to any brand but leaning towards Synology due to DSM interface. I've had various WD NAS for 20+ years and want to make the experience much more user friendly for my family as they have grown up using the NAS locally but are now leaving home. I would like to make cell phone photo/video/media uploading (to clear phone storage from iOS devices) much easier and accessible once stored on the server with facial recognition to help with searching.
I also have a wonderful wife who keeps me in check and doesn't want to spend any money on another NAS but also doesn't want to pay for cloud storage yet doesn't care for clunky WD interface either.
I was looking at the DS723+ since it is cheapest and is recommended but then see the 923+ with 2x more storage capability for not much more $ along with recommended QNAP TS-253E and get confused.
Basically, I need your help deciding on a good, budget friendly system.
Thanks, Steve

I have a asustor drivestor 2bay running two 4tb Western digital NAS drives in raid 1
I am filling them up faster than expected and bought two seagate pro 12tb drives to replace them
I am having trouble finding consistent instructions on how to make the swap. Most instructions are written for hot-swappable setups like the lockerstor
Can i open the case, power it up, then just swap em as if it was a front-mounted hot-swap nas or is there another way I need to do it?

NAS for Video Editing |

I work with small files 95% of the time and only occasionally with 4K files. I am curious whether my PC needs to be directly connected to the Synology NAS, or if an internet connection is sufficient. Can I store data on the NAS and access it remotely, for example, 1000 km away, over the internet? Is it possible to edit files directly on the NAS, or do I need to download them first?
The NAS is primarily intended to serve as a central data storage solution, allowing me to access my project files from my laptop while on the go. These project files, which I edit in DaVinci Resolve, should be centrally stored and accessible from multiple devices. It is not essential to edit the files directly on the NAS, as I will store and edit them locally on my computer or laptop 90% of the time.

Hi I'm looking for storage for photography. Both to edit and longer term backup which I will also need to edit periodically. I dont mind editing and storage being on two separate devices if that helps. I'm semi pro and the quantity and size of files is increasing year on year. I'd estimate that I need around 12-15TB per year. I don't mind buying some disks now and expanding later. I know my budget is probably tight for what I want to do. Let me know what you think. Much appreciated. Jude

Dedicated RAID for backups? |

Hi, Great Website and Channel!
I am looking to buy a Lockerstor Gen3 10 bay. I will mostly use it to store my whole family’s backup and photo library (which I would use to edit) and media. I understand as HDD gets filled up its speeds slows down. As I do a lot of photo editing, I want the connection as fast as possible and saturate the 10GB connection. Given the back ups would take the most space, should I dedicate 2 HDD and separate it with a Raid 0 for the backups and the other 8 HDD in RAID 5 for my photos and media? I don’t mind the Volumes / RAID for the backups to be slower. Would such an allocation speed up my media and Photo folders? Or should I just create one big RAID 5 and put them all in one volume?

Hi there,
I recently got a good deal on a Terramaster F4-423 - my first NAS!
To prepare, I (re-)watched your guides from earlier this year, where you mentioned that if the NAS is connected to the router, it automatically has internet access.
Since I solely want to use this NAS as an offline file server for backups, storage, and hosting movie files for my Zidoo Player, I don’t need internet access. However, I don’t have a network switch either.
I did some research, but as a beginner, I’ve found it difficult to find whether it’s possible to block internet access directly from the NAS itself. Terramaster’s security guides mention various precautions, but I couldn’t find any information about fully disabling internet access while still connecting the NAS to the router.
I thought I’d give it a shot and reach out and ask you. Do you have any tips or know of a guide that could help me achieve this?
Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Hans
