To which NAS to upgrade ?
Posted by: Ikar - 10-12-2024, 09:10 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,
I'm new in the forum watched your great videos and would like to hear your advice.

Currently, I have a TS-453Be NAS (use 2 bays only), which is starting to experience some performance bottlenecks. The CPU utilization reaches around 70-90% during the following tasks:

  • Backups with Acronis - Acronis is installed on a PC client that backs up data to and from the NAS
  • NAS backup to the cloud with HBS 3.
  • Torrent downloads with Rtorrent—this is the most demanding task.

When Rtorrent downloads something (runs at 65MB/s), Qsirch is automatically triggered and start indexing the new files which add ~30% to CPU util and results in 70-90% CPU util total with the Rtorrent proccess.
So if I try to do anything else in parallel with an ongoing Rtorrent download session, even simple SMB share browsing becomes slow.

Now, here’s my question: I’m thinking of upgrading to either the TS-262 or the TS-264. Which one would be more suitable for the needs mentioned above?
Additionally, would it be beneficial to go with the TS-264 due to its 4-core CPU, which might serve me well over a longer period?

Looking forward to your insights!

Thank you

  Synology Assistant
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-12-2024, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Within the last week, Assistant Map Drive and Connect stopped working. When I click the icon, it blinks but does nothing. Assistant sees the servers.
Windows Map Drive works as expected.
IF I type the correct IP in a browser, I can login to the NAS.
Current vs of Assistant is 7.0.5-50070. I updated from 7.0.1-50044 in hopes of resolving problem.
I have rebooted both the NAS (ds1821+) and the workstation. Problem persists.
Any thoughts?

  Video Editor DAS solution
Posted by: dskessler - 10-12-2024, 06:27 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys!
I'm a filmmaker and animator. My 4-year-old QNAP TR004 is about to run out of space and it's a bit slow. I looked around and bought the QNAP TVS-x72xt because of the Thunderbolt connection and loaded it with 18 TB drives. The speed is fantastic, but I was kind of under the impression, based on a misleading YouTube video, that I could use it as a DAS, and the drive would show up as local. This was wrong and it seems to mean that my Backblaze cloud backup would cost way more since the cheap subscription does not cover networked drives.

First question, is there a way to have Windows 11 see a network drive as a local one? If not, I think I have to get rid of the NAS and get a DAS with similar specs ie. 6 Bay, Thunderbolt (or equivalent), good software, RAID 5, not crazy loud or crazy expensive. Does anything fit that criteria?

  Which Nas to buy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-12-2024, 08:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi again I have to make a decision and buy a new nas. Awhile back recommended a Synology which I am keen to go for as I like the idea of extensive range of software and support. My Q is should I go for the DS923+ which I know is more than enough for my needs right now, but as you say think ahead re future proofing. So would this be a good choice given my main use is, streaming music to my hifi at a high bit rate, Photos and general phone and doc backups. I am currently using a WD 6TB My Cloud EX2 Ultra 2-bay NAS which is now full up and showing signs of falling over. So what would you recommend as I am on a tight budget, O and can I use my existing discs WD30EFRX-68EUZN0 and will I have to go through a complicated process to transfer them and data to the Synology. if not what drives can I get that won't break the bank. TIA

  Qnap TS-464eU-8G - WD Red SN700 NVMe & 32GB RAM
Posted by: Dysl3cic - 10-11-2024, 02:27 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hello Robbie and Eddie!

Just purchased Qnap TS-464eU-8G for my rack cabinet as a replacement to TS-673 (I am aware of the noise generated) and future possibility to migrate to ZFS.
I have two questions and would appreciate your support.

I am hesitating to buy 2 x WD Red SN700 NVMe 500 or 1000 capacity due lack of the information if I can configure them as QTS drive in Raid 1.
I read somewhere that there is no advantage of QTS being installed on NVMe as the system is spread across all drives.
Is that really the case for QTS (and in future for ZFS), hence using both NVMe as cache would be better option?
From the old system I have 4 x HDD Red (SMR unfortunately) that I will configure in Raid 10 to reduce a risk of drive failure if I would have them in Raid 5 configuration and during potential rebuilding of the raid matrix.

Second question I have regarding 2 x 16GB DDR4, to be more specific the Crucial ‎CT16G4SFRA32A.
Many sources reports that the onboard intel can support more than 16GB of RAM and up to 64 in total.
Have you heard or know if that is the case and before I make my mind to buy the extra memory?

I would highly appreciate your reply.
Andy

Asustor AS1002T fails to read HDD without initialization
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-11-2024, 01:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Dear Nascompares,
We store our important family data in an Asustor AS1002T with 2x8TB HDD configured as double RAID. All of a sudden we lost contact to the NAS from our PC. After pressing the reset button we still were not able to access it in a browser. Then with the ACC program we found it asks for initialization. But that would include erasing all data. The NAS does not have problem operating other HDDs. But when we insert our own HDDs, it again asks for initialization. We cannot read the data of the HDDs with other devices as well, even though Hard Disk Sentinel says they are in fine condition. How could we access the data on the HDDs? How could we make the NAS continue to run our HDDs without erasing data?
Thank you in advance for your help.

  DS923+ 10Gb upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-11-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

When adding the 10Gb upgrade can the 2 original 1Gb ports still be utilized?
Considering running VM's in dockers that have their own dedicated ethernet ports utilizing the original two 1 Gb ports

  QNAP Always churning
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-11-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi guys, many thanks for all your vids, it's really help me understand my new NAS.

I have the QNAP TS-464 and loving it, however, it is realways noisy. It's not the disk noise per se that's frustrating, but the fact it's always going, all the time, even if the LAN connection is unplugged.

Is this normal? Or is there a way to set a standby? Or do I need to stick it in a cupboard.

Thanks in advance

David

  NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-10-2024, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Good evening,

The article is amazing, I've been wanting to make a NAS for some time, but I find it difficult to know what exactly I need, and your article and videos were really helpful, I really appreciate it!

Still, I still have doubts about what is best for the purpose that my NAS will have, which I will tell you about below.
I am a web programmer, and I would love to be able to use it as a web server, so I would always have to have Docker containers running.
Of course I also want to use it for photo and video backups and a multimedia server with Plex.
I don't know what RAM memory, processor power it should have, if the speed of the RJ45 will be critical to act as a web server...

As for hard drives, I think I would start with two 8TB ones, one being a replica of the other for safety, or is it not worth it? I would store all the photos and videos on them, as well as the backups. And SSD for the OS and Docker?

My most sincere thanks!!

Greetings,
Javier Quintana
