Home Software RAID 6 Array in my PC
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-02-2024, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

Hi.
I have quite powerful PC with 8 onboard SATA ports. I have planned to use it as a "NAS" since I built this PC, now I have the money to do so. The “NAS” in quotas as this is my working desktop used to stream some media when working in home environment like Video streaming to a TV (not PLEX, rather KODI + win SAMBA directory share)
I wanted a RAID config to replace my JBOD 16 different old HDDs plugged directly into an adapter one by one when needed:/
Problematic Setting:
- 6SATA ports from a Chipset, 2 SATA ports from separate on-board controller
- Windows 11 PC used daily but not 24/7
Questions:
- is Software RAID 6 an OK solution (But I don’t know the software to do so yet)
- Which drives to use in non 24/7 env, 20TB drives would be perfect.
Desired Outcome:
- Work under Windows 11
- No so Loud
- Daily On/Off wont demage Drives
- Extendable (with PCI-Express card or M2-> Sata converter) I would like to add drives to the same array in the future, if possible)

  Selecting a NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-02-2024, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello,

I recently came across a deal on Amazon for the Synology DS224+ paired with two 4TB Seagate IronWolf HDDs, priced at approximately $600. My primary use case for this setup would be to stream movies from my NAS. However, I am unfamiliar with the process and have been researching options like Plex and Jellyfin to understand how they work.

I typically download 4K HDR movies, with file sizes around 40GB each, from private torrent sites. My question is: Is the Synology DS224+ sufficient to handle this use case, considering I only intend to stream to my OLED TV and projector?

Thank you for your insights.

upgrading current nas to a more scalable nas with more storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-02-2024, 06:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am looking for a nas solution for my media business. We currently have two separate 6 bay nas systems and are looking to increase our storage capacity as well as the speed in order to edit 4k video faster without buffering, and higher data transfer speeds when uploading our footage to it. between our two nas devices we have 70TB of content that has been accumulated over the past 5 years. With our business model we are constantly pulling old footage to use so I need to be able have fast speeds on all drives. I am leaning towards a large rack mount nas that can use SSD instead of hard drives for faster speed purposes but I do not have the knowledge in this field to know exactly what I need. Also, it needs to have good redundancy because we cannot afford to lose any of our media.

  Server Upgrade
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-02-2024, 05:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Upgrading from a ds918+ that worked fairly well for us, want to go with a rackmount solution. Not doing and NVR or much VM stuff, mostly do local file sharing and active backup for business for 10-15 computers.

Hi,

Love your vids. Have learned SOOO much since I discovered your website and YT channel.

I’m looking for my first nas. What I want to do with the nas:

1) replacement for OneDrive/Dropbox
2) replacement for Netflix/HBO (so setting up a Plex/Jellyfin)
3) replacement for Spotify
4) contacts/notes/ server

I want thinking about the F4-424 Pro.

I have 3x 4TB WD Purple HDD left from a NVR system I was using that I want to use in the nas. Also bought 2x WD black SN770 1TB NVME drive during Black Friday.

So my question is can I run the things mentioned and also will it run them all at the same time all the time?

PS not planing on doing anything else on the nas

  Terra master F2-424 Ram
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-01-2024, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi
Quick question. Im'buying a terramaster F2-424 Nas for a small plex server to house all my old SD dvd's and I was wondering...

The specs say 8GB DDR5 4800MHz memory (non-ECC, upgradable up to 32GB),

Does upgradable mean I can use ANY brand of compatible RAM up to 32 or would it require Terremaster's own memory to achieve a full 32GB... ie limiting it to 16gb with off brand memory

Thanks mate!!

  Home Storage NAS
Posted by: Enquiries - 12-01-2024, 07:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I use cloud storage for personal purposes only. I don't take professional photos or videos; I simply need a place to store my photos, videos, tax documents, and other random files. Currently, I've been using Dropbox for years, but I'm looking for more control over the privacy of my data. I don't keep any files locally on my phone or iPad, and I don’t own a personal computer. I don't have kids who would use up storage or have a massive digital library of content. Whenever I take photos, I immediately upload them to the cloud. Occasionally, I share old pictures with friends via text by sending links to my Dropbox. I have a 2TB storage plan on Dropbox, but I'm only using 58GB of it. I prefer not to use an external hard drive, even though I own one, because I dislike the hassle of plugging and unplugging it into my iPad to upload files.

What is the difference between the DS220+ and DS244+

Migration Assistant-Enable "Advanced Data Integrity" on Destination Homes Share?
Posted by: canuck_ed - 12-01-2024, 05:41 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (3)

I am planning (hopefully) on using Synology Migration Assistant to go from source DS415+ to destination DS423+. All my BTRFS source shares have "Data Checksum for Advanced Data Integrity" enabled except for "Homes".

How can I get Advanced Data Integrity also enabled for the "Homes" share on the new destination NAS? Eg.

  1. Does Migration Assistant allow for somehow adding that option or does it only copy settings exactly what is from the source?
  2. Or must I somehow create on the DS423+ the "Homes" share with it enabled? How is that done? (because i tried when I first went from EXT3 to BTRFS a few years back but was unsuccessful only on "Homes" share)
