  NAS storage - charity filmmaker
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-08-2024, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi Robbie and Eddie, I hope this finds you both well. I've been watching your videos about the Terramaster NAS D8 and D5 and they've been hugely helpful.

I'm a filmmaker and have been working specifically in-house at charities for the past nearly 10 years. I've started at a new charity and setting up a post production workflow from scratch basically.Currently I'm editing off 2TB SSDs and backing up on spare hard drives, and trying to backup on the cloud when I get a chance. But obviously that's an awful and unsafe way to work. So... this is what I'm thinking (maybe getting initial HDDS and SDDs and then building up) -

Terramaster D8 Hybrid DAS - £259.99
WD Red Pro NAS Hard Drive - 8 TB X 2 - (£214.99 each) - £429.98
WD Red SN700 Series 2TB M.2 2280 M-Key PCIe NVMe SSD Drive - £170
TOTAL - £858.98
TOTAL MINUS NVMe SSD - £688.98

I'd love to get your thoughts. Thanks so much.

Cheers,

James

Replacing old 416J backup NAS to get 2.5Gbps
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-08-2024, 04:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (4)

I have 8 Linux boxes that each have local Timeshift/Lucky backups to a dedicated internal SSD (usually sata 512GB, but sometimes an m.2). Each of these Linux boxes has a weekly or more often an alternating day CRON job that rsync's these local backups to a the DS224+ (2x bonded 1Gbps ports directly to router) on my local LAN (2.5Gbps). The Lucky rsyncs run under 25mins. The TimeShift rsyncs can take an hour or a bit more. Then once per week the DS224+ does a 'Hyper Backup' to an old DS416J out in a detached garage (via buried Cat6 to the 2.5Gbps switch the 416j is plugged into). This weekly backup of the DS224+ has a 4 hour window. Now, finally to the question...

Will replacing the 416j with a QNAP TS-216G-US or some magic to get the 416j to be 2.5Gbps buy me enough time to reduce this 4hour window for the DS224+ backup? Or is this just a waste of money for not much time savings?

Thanx, Skip

  5g setup Robustel 5020
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-08-2024, 10:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi young man Thank you for your video's. I have just bought a Robustel 5020 for home use as a 5g router with the intension of getting an external antenna if needed. It is in new condition but unfortunately despite a factory reset and downloading the SW and HW guides it has defeated me. I took it to my local computer shop who said they couldn't deal with it and directed it to the mobile shop across the road who also told me they couldn't deal with . I am looking for someone to set it up via post or talk me through via telephone /zoom.

  Budget option for NAS Vdeocediting
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-06-2024, 09:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm completely new to NAS systems as of last week and I know I need to move from external ssd's and HDD's. l'm a photographer/videographer and I edit in davinci resolve (typically h.264 and h.265 files) and Lightroom (raw photos) off an m1 MacBook Pro and I currently don't have anyone in need of accessing files as of now so it's just me editing my work but that could change in the future. My WiFi router speed is 50Mpbs
My goal is to not get more than what I need now but could upgrade the NAS in the future if needed.
(Currently thinking of a RAID 5 setup with three hard drives with around 16tb -24tb to last me a while)
Could you suggest a NAS system that might be helpful and any explanation would be helpful as well.
I do genuinely want to understand more about NAS systems

Am I asking for too much? (Advice for NAS purchase)
Posted by: stalgya - 10-06-2024, 06:14 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

First, thanks so much for the YouTube channel. It took me some time to find your stuff for some reason, but I think you're the most balanced.

I've been using cloud backup and external hard drives for years, and I'm looking to be more intentional with data management. I was looking to buy a 4- or 5-bay NAS and I've found myself spinning in circles online. I want to backup 3 MacBooks (varying vintages), and photos from 2 iPhones and 3 iPads. I also want to consolidate all my external hard drives (usually about 1-2 TB of used space) into one place. And I would like to install a Plex server so that I can play some of the movies I've ripped from my old DVD collection. I was hoping to be a responsible adult and back this up to BackBlaze or another backup provider.

I've been going back and forth between Synology and QNAP. I only wanted to spend up to about $600. It seems like Synology basically isn't an option so I should focus on QNAP. Based on the above request, do you think I'm asking for too much and I should increase my budget? I'm somewhat tech savvy (I just started messing with Docker), but I also want a solution that mostly works without a lot of fidgeting.

Thanks in advance!

Hi - Jim again. I found 2TB Transcend SSD470N 2.5-inch SSD SATA3 3D NAND on NEWEGG. Do you think there are better SSDs for a DS1522+? Thank you.

Hello, curious if you guys have ever attempted to utilize the m.2 as a storage pool on a Synology 920 plus via this GitHub post.

  Prosumer NAS Solution
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-04-2024, 05:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (5)

I am a hobbyist photographer and personal travel video creator. Recently, I started working as a free volunteer with a local sports non-profit as they are building a photo/video studio where I will collaborate on shooting photos of athletes and recording/editing a podcast. I need to consolidate my personal files (around 4-5 TB) and store the non-profit’s photo and video files. I plan on setting up a NAS at my home office or the studio (wherever it makes more sense in the future) to store all the data. The studio and my office have 1 Gbps internet, and some other volunteers might need to access the organization files periodically for collaboration. I have binge-watched a million of your videos but can’t decide whether to go the DIY route or an off-the-shelf solution. I have built a Hackintosh and PC in the past, but I am primarily a great step-by-step build guide follower. HELP!

CWWK Q670 - 4*nvme - Looking for help with BIOS setting
Posted by: biebel38 - 10-03-2024, 05:13 PM - Forum: Technical Support - Replies (12)

Hello,

Some time ago I received the CWWK Q670 Motherboard, the version that has a 2 SFF-8643 onboard ports instead of the 8-sata ports. I originally ordered that one, but they decided to send me this version instead as the 8-sata port version wasn't available anymore. I decided to give this one a try, so I've been experimenting with it to see what would be a good layout for a combination of HDD and NVME disks.

According to the attached picture, from their product page, it should be possible to change the onboard SFF-8643 PCIe connector from 4 PCI3.0 x 1 signals to 1 PCI3.0 x 4 signal via the BIOS, but so far I haven't figured it out which setting(s) this would be. I checked everything that made sense, but no luck so far. The BIOS version is the one that came with the board, I couldn't find a more recent version on their support page. There's one for the Q670 8-sata version, but attempting to use that one results in the error "The host CPU does not have write access to the target flash area.", which probably indicates it's not a suitable BIOS version.

I've tried to contact CWWK support for 2 weeks now, with no reply yet. Any ideas would be very welcome.

B.
