  NAS recommendation - Personal cloud
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-09-2025, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm looking to buy a 2 bay NAS to create my personal cloud backup - it could be photos, sync photos from cell phone(s), personal laptop, media content etc. I don't need intend on adding any surveillance cameras (atleast not in the next couple of years). I might dable with Plex, given all the hype.

I want the entire setup to be around 600USD. I have already purhcased 2x6TB Ironwolf HDD (~$215). I'm eyeing either the QNAP 262-4G or the UGreen 2bay model.

Thanks

QNAP TS-464: should we still buy it in 2025?
Posted by: Freeco - 01-09-2025, 11:44 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (13)

I'm in the market for a new NAS, as my old one I have running at my neighbors as an off-site backup is about to go EOL. I obviously want to get security updates for a device that's connected to the internet... I'd put my current QNAP TS-453D at my neighbors, and buy a new one for home.
The QNAP TS-464 would perfectly suite my needs, but it doesn't feel right to still buy a model that over 2 years old, and I expect will be replaced some time soon.

The TS-464 was revealed in March 2022, so almost 3 years ago.
It was launched somewhat later. NC reviewed it 18th of April 2022, and re-reviewed it May last year.

In the meantime its Intel N5095 CPU is 4 years old. Intel Jasper Lake has had a replacement with Alderlake last year (the N95 for eg), and Q1 this year Twin Lake is released.
The processing power of the N5095 should be fine for me. What holds me back most is the PCIe Gen3 x1 NVMe slots. Should still be perfectly fine for traffic over 2.5Gbit, but it feels so outdated.
Not that I expect much better from the newer generation CPUs though. I see both Alderlake and Twin Like are also still PCIe gen 3, and have only 1 extra lane available.

So yeah... should I wait?
Anyone have any rumors about a successor to the TS-464?
There's CES in Las Vegas at the moment... Is QNAP present with new models?

Getting started with NAS (DIY of OOB) for multimedia
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-09-2025, 12:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hey there!

First off, I have absolutely cherished watching your content as I dive into the (very deep) black hole that is NAS. Your unbiased and forthright approach is greatly appreciated! However I have hit a bit of a dead end.

I am in my 20s and wanting to 'future proof' myself with a NAS for my media usage, ripping blu-rays and dvds to then store long term and stream in my own home via Plex (or equivalent) as well as share with friends and family now and into the future.

I am looking for something that can store uncompressed 4k blu rays for in home use as well as a plethora of 1080p and 720p streams of older movies / tv shows so I am thinking I will need at least 5-6bays and up to 60+ TB of usable storage with redundancy. I am looking to DIY as it seems you can get a lot more bang for back particularly taking into account transcode power for multiple streams. Do you have a recommended spec for a Jonsbo N3 for this use? Thanks!

Advice on NAS for multiple families
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2025, 11:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi,

Wanting to set up a solution for my own family and extended family (parents, sister and sister's family). Looking to replace our cloud subscriptions.

Here are our main priorities:
- File/Photo/Video Backup
- Good software for the above, particularly photo/video management/search
- Offsite backup (2 locations, at least)
- Good online access
- Expandability (there are 8 children in total, some of whom will become adults soon)
- Small business use (though less important as I use Onedrive)
- Possible media (video editing) backup in future

The last two points are less important.

From the research I've done, it seems like Synology is the best option (best software). And probably having two NASes in two locations. Is having the same NAS in both places necessary or beneficial? I'm wondering if I can have one as the main NAS (e.g., the DS423 (not +) looks like a suitable option for us in terms of price/spec) and something simpler as backup. Keen to hear your recommendations. Thanks.

I ask NAScompare to evaluate the publication of a video on hardware that mounts "coreboot" as BIOS, I have how to install it on motherboards that have tried previously.
technically they should be identical to many products that use Protectli.
I noticed that many motherboards have closed and non-upgradeable BIOS especially on copy and re-branded products and this is not a good thing for motherboards intended to be used as NAS or server with personal or business data.
same observation / video request on TMP modules after the market and evaluation considerations to make at the time of purchase. tnk

Just an approximate cost (building or buying, we are able to do either).

923+ with 4x 4GB drives in RAID5
2 x 400 GB NVME (1x storage pool + 1x read cache)

Moving to:

4x 12 TB drives in RAID6

Need a backup and restore strategy.

I am using Hyper Backup and using 1 12 TB drive to back up to it.
My plan is to use 3 drives in RAID5, restore the data and then build a RAID6 once my functionality testing is complete.
But I am very worried whether full restore will work.

Hello, I'm choosing a NAS for home use, primarily for photo backup and movie streaming (Full HD, occasionally 4K). The main criterion is that the NAS should be quiet (especially at night, when it's not in use) and have low power consumption. I would also appreciate advice regarding recommended hard drives. I was planning to use 4 x WD Red Plus 12TB in RAID5. I prefer the Synology brand. I’m hesitating between the DS423+, DS923+, and DS1522+ (I'm concerned the DS1522+ might be too noisy). I’m not in a hurry to buy, does it make sense to wait for new models? Thank you a lot!

  NAS Help
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2025, 11:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Just looking for some advice, currently have a plex server setup with old PC components out of my gaming PC, 8700k with Asus ROG Strix Z390-F mobo, looking to reduce power consumption and make something a little more PLEX focused, we recently got a 4k projector so starting to look at supporting more 4k content on the server. I have underclocked the 8700k to drop the power consumption but the processor still seems like overkill for the setup. Also unsure what PSU I should be looking at, unsure what is in the system now but I assume some 800w Corsair or something along those lines. I am using no real features of the ATX motherboard as well, so must be wasting additional power there. I would like to stick with TrueNAS as I know it well, in terms of storage, I have 3x Ironwolf 3TB drives, looking to get some larger drives as well. Budget isn't a huge issue but would like to keep it as low as I can. Appreciate your help

  NAS for large genomics data
Posted by: Enquiries - 01-08-2025, 09:35 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi. Thanks for the amazing content you provide! I would appreciate advice on a NAS I’m building for home/research use, with the following specs

-I’m particularly interested in Synology
- Main use is to store and analyse large data (Genomics data), currently 12 Tb, and scaling to 40Tb in 3-5 years
- Redundancy of 1 to 2 drives
- Real time coding by R studio or python. Where I access, analyse, and write data (~1gb files) directly from NAS data through resources of my PC (optional)
- low noise (quiet fans + low-noise reliable UPS?)

The build i'm thinking of:
-DN1522+ with two 16Tb synology plus HDD drives
-Synology 400GB NVMe cache (for speedy real-time analysis)
-E10G22-T1-Mini 10gb module (for speedy real-time analysis)
-APC BACK-UPS ES-BE850G2
-For noise: Noctua NF-A12x25 fans for NAS, acoustic foam under the NAS, and velco strips on HDD mount

What do you think Big Grin ?
