Synology Migration? |

I currently have a DS220j and am getting a DS415+ used. My 220j has 2-12TB drives and has a Raid-1 configuration. 1 Pool and 1 Volume. I'm currently running a hyperback on it to a USB external drive as I type. My main question is, can I set up the new NAS with Raid-10 and keep my data using Synology's migration tool, or will I need to set up the 4 discs of the 412+ first and do a Raid-10 and then do a restore from backup to get my data onto the new NAS?

Hi,
Since DropBox stopped with unlimited cloudstorage I need to create something new that works for me. I'm a Filmmaker that works mostly alone but sometimes with others. I'm totally new to the NAS and DAS workflow and if you could help me with some suggestions I would really appreciate!
What I want:
- It must met the 3-2-1 way of storage. (because dropbox is now gone, this is not the case anymore for me.)
- I work with 4k/8k RAW files so I like my hot storage to be ssd 4 to 8 tb's
- My cold storage can be hdd, something like 18tb, perhaps two drives.
- Some future proof setup would be nice.
I you know a perfect system for a filmmaker let me know!
Thank you for your time, really appreciated!
Kinds regards,
Jeroen Uriot

I'm have a Synology DS413j used as a simple NFS/SMB share for an OSMC media centre (Kodi) and for accessing media files from a Linux desktop and Windows laptops.
The NAS is running SHR with 4xWD HDDs giving 3.6TB at 64% utilisation.
I have a separate cheap (crappy) NVR with 2 IP cameras which will increase to 4. The NVR is next to useless for reviewing footage, especially searching for events, and I want rid.
The DS413j is 12 years old and I'm of a mind to replace it with once which combines the roles of a simple media server and surveillance station. I am considering QNAP given the 8 included camera licenses.
Does this make sense? I am leaning towards the TS-264 but could you please give me your thoughts. Also any guidance on drive configuration (HDD/SDD) would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Device to be used as Apple Time Machine & backup for Windows PC. Ablility to back up our Android phones a plus. Want 2 LAN ports (one for each computer) & wireless connectivity for backing up NAS to One Drive. Also want to be able to use as a plex server (both on local wifi & remotely). Want to run RAID 1, 5, 6 or 10 and want it to be upgradable.

Hi there,
I've seen your youtube channel and your website and I'm very impressed by your thoroughness. I don't work directly with servers in any capacity and am learning as I go here.
I currently have a Plex Home Server with 5Terabyte Hard Drive I maxed out today. I've been adding to this server nonstop through manual DVD rips over the past 2 years. I need to level up and I'm hoping to take advantage of some black friday deals. I would love a simple recommendation of a NAS that would be appropriate for the next 10 years. Thoughts on what that might look like?
Thank you!
Luke

Build my onw modern NAS & VM-Hypervisor in one |

I want to setup a NAS which needs to run minimum 4 VM's on it. Graphics is not so important. Maybe a bit of 4k playing of videos might be setup on it as well for some video playback
Disks will be 3,5 Inch SATA III - minimal 4
I want to verify and have some advice on Case, the Motherboard (micro-ATX), CPU and Memory.
I look for DDR5-ECC 128GB (4x 32GB)
1 or 2 M.2 drives is nice for caching read and write or maybe putting them in mirror mode and run 2 VM's from them
Nas fileshares will be SMB and NFS, no iSCSI as it sucks when a connection fails. NFS will just continue when connections restore
Case: silverstone-cs382
Motherboard: asrock-b650m-pro-rs
CPU: amd-ryzen-7-9700x-boxed
Memory: Kingston KSM52E42BD8KM-32HA
Ant tips?
Thanks,
Frans

Looking for a NAS for files an Backups |

Hello,
thank you for all the videos and comparisons, they helped me a lot to drill down my options.
However, I'm still a bit uncertain with the final decision.
I'm looking for a Synology NAS, as Active Backup and BTRFS are key factors here.
The NAS is intended for backing up Windows, macOS and a couple of linux servers, as well as pulling in data from Google Drive/Photos.
There is a small amount of videos but nothing that requires transcoding and I'm not intending to use Plex.
I already have about 4TB of existing data and 4 Seagate Ironwolf 4TB drives from a pevious NAS project.
For connectivity the connecting devices support 2.5G and I'm considering adding a non-managed 2.5G switch to my network.
I want to keep the option to host a few services locally, but not extensively.
I'm currently looking at the 923+ or the 1522+. Especially the latter for the additional RAM and network ports as well as more headroom for future disk (maybe even ssd) additions.
Best regards and thanks

WORM on QNAP |

Hey Robbie and Eddie
Your YouTube channel is amazing (as I have commented several times)!
Recently, you did a video on QNAP/Synology use of WORM.
I have a Synology DS918+ NAS as primary, and RSYNC back up to an offsite QNAP TVS-1582 NAS.
Currently, I make 2 sets of backups, one is a SYNC of my Synology data (so single copy), and the other is Multiple versions, to be able to roll back the data.
I would like to setup the backup in such a way that my QNAP backup becomes WORM, but not sure how to set this up.
This may be a good Video idea to show others also (whether it's the same setup - S to Q, or S to S, or Q to Q).
Cheers
D

I purchased a Synology DS923 and 2 Ironwolf Pro 20TB Hard drives. The hard drives are very noisy. (it kinda sounds like small animals are moving furniture). I was thinking that I should swap these hard drives for 2 - 12 TB. Do I have any other options? Can use the 20TB hard drives in the NAS and have them not run all the time?
Also... I really like your YouTube channel and living in Seattle, I can relate to your dislike seagulls
